Nintendo Wii U

So the Wii U is with my next door neighbour, ready to be retrieved then wrapped up for christmas. But I don't want to be effing about with setup and updates and all that bollocks on xmas day, so what's the quickest way to get it set up so as to be ready to just plug in and go? This is my guess so far (I don't really even want to bother doing a Wii data transfer if I can avoid it - the VC stuff I bought can stay where it is):

1. Copy any Miis I want to keep off an old remote (can you still do this with Wii U?)

2. Copy any game saves I want to keep off an SD (as above?)

3. Initial set up of ... what? NNID stuff? Is there any link to my Nintendo Europe Stars account or is that totally separate?

4. System updates?

5. Download of Wii Fit U trial (this'll automatically be picked up as the full game when a Fit Meter is registered, right?) & any digital stuff I've got.

6. Hack the Wii side of it so I can still use the USB Loader for the handful of Wii stuff I'm keeping. Best guide? Will be using Smash Bros hopefully.

Sound about right? Anything else, or more detail I need to think about? Ta.

I've never tried duets, but it does support two mics at a time... It's much more like a proper karaoke than Singstar. But it does have a score element that you can switch on if you want.

I thouhht Singstar became a bit dull whenever playing people who knew how to game it to concentrate on just getting the pitch right, with it becoming a scoring contest rather than a outrageous singing exhibition.

I'll never forget Comrade's amazing Baby Got Back from the Bath meet

Just a heads up that if you're not doing the Wii system transfer you will need to play all of your Wii games once on the Wii mode of WiiU before it will let you transfer the save.

Er, what? I didn't need to do that.

I may have gotten Wii to Wii and Wii to WiiU save transfer mixed up. When I copied saves my old Wii to a new one the system would not let copy across any save file for a game I had not played on the new system. So I have to start them at least once and delete any save file created originally on the new system before it would let me copy the save across. I just assumed that the Wii mode on the WiiU worked in the same way.

Nope.

Are you sure? I was reading up on it and everything says that I can transfer the saves to Wii U from SD, but you at least need to get the Wii game onto the disc load screen (not actually play it as such) in order for it to let you put a save on for it. It's no hassle either way just so as long as it's possible, I've only got a few left. Actually, I've just realised I've switched the Wii U on to update it, so I can try it! Back in a min.

Hang on, can we transfer Wii saves over to the U without doing the system transfer gubbins?

Yes. You just need to launch the game once before it'll let you transfer the save from SD as proven thusly:

It'll let me do this for any of the games I could transfer to SD, which is most games. Mario Kart Wii wouldn't, and there was one other I don't have the game for anyway but my remaning 8 are fine. One thing I can't seem to be able to do is copy Miis via the remote any more, so I'll have to do that via some homebrew export/import I guess.

How does having it in pretty much single player mode combat that though? Any time I've played Singstar it's usually when everyone's pissed so the scores kind of went out the window anyway :) I note I've only got a 7 day trial out of the box though so I'll wait 'til I register and try it out. I could borrow and use my mate's PS2 Singstar mics though, right?

Hang on, so if I pop my monster hunter wii disc into my wii u, I can then just transfer my mh save via sd without faffing around with the internet and data transfer apps? Please let this be true.

My wii u is here:)

The firmware update is :(

But that's ok because NSMB U is incomparably beautiful:)

Apparently if I register my console I'll get FIVE POUNDS credit for the store. What should I buy?
