Nintendo Wii U

I heard that Wii Party U is the worst party since the Nazi Party. It's so bad you are better off paying extra to not get it.

I decided to get it for the cheap Wiimote+ but have had a few games with the wife and it seems decent enough fun. With 4 people it would be even better. Throwaway mini games for half an hour of fun is what's needed on a Xmas night!

A couple of games I can remember:

- Each player runs around a mini football pitch kicking their own coloured balls into goals.

- Pole vault game, waggle to run, stop the launch angle as close to 45 degrees, waggle to fly further

- Pick robot parts from a production line to make robots, all parts same colour, more points

- Selection of hats with differing points values, each player picks a hat, you score if you pick a hat that no one else picks

- Animal race, waggle to run, but watch the stamina

- Each player has a balloon on their head which can be burst, Timmy Mallet style, by the others

- One player has gamepad and rolls a ball trying to knock the others off a platform. The others run away from the ball.

That's just off the top of my head. Very shallow, but enjoyable.

I managed to wring a fair bit of fun out of Mario Party 8, so I'm sure I could enjoy even the feeblest of party games. However Wii Party seems to be the reserve of "hold the controller really still" type nonsense.

Mario Party 8 was shite, whereas Wii Party was excellent fun. So I'm hoping Wii Party U is more the latter than the former.

Haven't played the new one yet but the old one was nothing like that - it's a big tombola of skill-based and luck-based minigames (tending towards the former) which don't outstay their welcome, with various game modes wrapped around them and some single player puzzle and co-op stuff on the side (with dedicated co-op minigames). The scattering of luck-based games is a bit genius when playing with any mix of gaming abilities, as you won't be laying waste to everyonegetting the first go every time with your old-skool gaming skillz.

I've pimped Wii Party U before so I will again, it's excellent fun when my daughter and her boyfriend are round. The fashion game is a fun board game. The Twister with fingers is great. The already mentioned Pictionary type thing. The pull faces so others can guess your expression. The football team/poker hybrid game. And a lot of the mini-games are pretty good. There's one where a player is invisible in a maze and the others have to find them. Some tiles on the floor light up if the invisible person crosses them. I think it's better than the ghost mode in Nintendoland.

Any tips for using it with small children?

Only let them have the pad if they're at floor level :hat:

It's sturdy though: mine has taken multiple mantlepiece and seat-height falls, a 4 year-old tantrum throw because she doesn't know how to say "FUCKING... FUCK IT. FUCK IT!" yet and multiple screen-side slams from the baby pulling the thing out of the charging cradle, without taking any damage.

...and that just became a cert for a Christmas purchase :D Wii Party was our regular Saturday night game with the kids, but they're obsessed with NintendoLand and particularly the ghost game now.

My boy is nearly five (Xmas Eve is his big day) and we've been enjoying games on the Wii and Wii U for the past couple of years. He loves Lego City and NSMBU, he loves Wii Party on the Wii and he's also pretty good at Mario Kart. He also loved most of the games in Nintendoland as well. He did find Rayman a bit scary though. Oh, and he loved Kung Fu Rabbit off the e-shop along with Bit Trip Runner 2 as well.

Will the games recommended so far be suitable for a three (nearly four) -year old boy?

Probably, my godson had a good time with Wii Party when he was 4 or 5. In fact, that'd be another good one to pick up given it might be even simpler than the U version.

Guys, I want a Wii U right now. I don't think I'll be able to go many more days without Mario 3D World in my posession. I currently can't find any of those lovely £199.99 deals, so I'm sorely tempted to buy that £300 Nintendo bundle. It has the games I want, I like the Mario Wiimote and the hat only sweetens the deal. Would it be madness to make such a purchase? Would you judge me harshly for doing so? I should probably at least wait until tomorrow for any special deals, right? The bundle isn't available til tomorrow anyway.

There's a Game opposite my work, so I could have one RIGHT NOW if I wanted, but I think I can at least show enough restraint to avoid doing that. I think. It's lovely to be this excited about a new console, but I fear my childlike excitement is going to lead me into a very poor decision.

Erm. Help?

It supports 2, just no games that use 2 yet.

I know they announced it will support 2 after complaints, but nearly a year later and you still can't buy the WUP seperately, I wouldn't be surprised if they just don't bother at this point, one of the early things put forward for it was 2 player John Madden Football, so you could do the secret play calling (like on the Dreamcast), but that's no longer a reason to bring it out.
