Nintendo Wii U

Had a little play on my kids Xmas pressie earlier. Updates took 20 mins. Transferred Mii's from 3DS. Gamepad feels very comfy, UI is decent if a little slow. Display on pad was better than I expected, not quite as nice as 'dat screen' but still good. Shame no optical audio out as I have a pre-hdmi amp. Impressed by the amount of stuff you get in the box - didn't realise it came with stand for the pad and a sensor bar.

Downloaded TW101 demo, Jesus it was confusing. Didn't know what to look at, wasn't even sure which chars were enemies! Does the full game introduce things slowly? Think it put me off the full game a bit tbh.

:o

Must have sunk 20+ hours into this mini game alone and had no idea!

Ha, I guess it's easy to miss. There are downsides - you have to 'charge' the energy release, and whilst you are doing so it shows the ghost on the main screen. So you have to giveaway your position, and the energy spots are easy enough to dodge.

The shock move is really good when there's one Luigi left and they're trying to rescucitate the other players.

I got some Amazon credit from work unexpectedly and bought The Wonderful 101 today purely because I love Kamiya's cheeky wee face. Hopefully that and Monster Hunter, which is slowly making its mark on me, will keep me going until Christmas as I'm getting 3D World as a gift.

Here, found that post: http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?/topic/266279-the-wii-u-thread/?p=9526792

Pretty much:

Install Homebrew Channel via a hacked savegame

Use HB Channel to install custom IOSes which USB loaders need to run games

Put a USB loader on your SD card and launch it

Then you can put your Wii discs in and it'll let you run them, rip them to an HD and play them off the HD

I thought it was pretty hard to instal a custom IOS on a modern firmware Wii?

But thanks for the info - will look more into it (g

Seeing the fact that I could ditch my Wii and use this with running my games via a USB loader still makes it all seem more attractive, especially with the advent of Mario 3D World... so what would be the better deal, that Premium NSMBU + Luigi U + 2 Sports games pack for £220 from game or I've seen someone selling a week old Premium NSBU + Luigi U pack with Nintendoland and WW HD for £250 (would see if I can get them to take £230)?

The main problem is, I can't think of many games I'd want other than those, in fact I could arguably live without any or all of them with Mario 3D World being the main draw. Is there a list of recommended's lying about (retail games and nintendo store stuff)? Ta.

Nabbit's invincible though, how can you not get through the levels? Or are one of the yoofs playing as him?

Nabbit doesn't get hurt by enemies, but he can still fall down holes, get squashed by falling blocks, get left behind as the screen scrolls etc. So he's easier but not invincible. And yes one of the boys plays as him.

Hey guys, remember how ropey looking 360 games were at first. Imagine how good WiiU games are going to look when Nintendo get the hang of HD.

The shame of it is, you won't see third parties stretching it like that so that we may see other graphical styles too. It does certainly bode well for Nintendo games in the future. MK should really benefit from the extra dev time it's been given and it already looks a cut above.

You can also press B (bottom one, always confuses me that it's B on Nintendo consoles for some reason) as the ghost for a little dash but this also makes you visible.

This might be more obvious but the two blue rings of light around the ghost show you how much you're going to make the wiimotes vibrate, so by moving towards or away from the luigis, you can make them think you're somewhere you're not. For ages I thought that was a thing that only the luigis could tell (as in 'it's vibrating loads, he's really near me!!') but being able to induce that panic is amusing.

Always confuses me it *isn't* on any other console. It's always been B A on Nintendo consoles.

Yeah I know what you mean but weirdly, it's not been much of a 'thing' on a nintendo console for ages, you had big A on the wiimote with B underneath, huge button and brilliantly laid out (IMHO) other buttons on Cube and N64 had the B and A with the yellow buttons, the last one before the WiiU was probably the SNES that actually had the 4 in that configuration. I'm ashamed to admit that so long using xbox controllers with A and B the 'other' way around has changed my brain :P

Apologies for copying this post over from my PS4 post. Thought it was was appropriate for here too :D .

Jesus, i'm really in a dilemma. After wanting a PS4 for ages and putting money away since February to pay for it i'm now torn between this and a bloody Wii U of all things. All because of Super Mario 3D World.

Out of the release day games on PS4, only Resogun has me excited and I'm honestly not that bothered about anything else. Reading and watching things about Mario 3D sounds so fun and everything I love about gaming. I played The Wind Waker for a bit back in the Gamecube days and would definitely pick that up also. My only concern is what's after this on the Wii U? That's an honest question as I really didn't like the Wii that much so haven't been keeping up to date with Nintendo a lot over the last few years.

What didn't you like about the Wii?

Was there anything you DID like about it?

The answers to these questions will really improve the advice we can offer!

I liked the virtual arcade

Seriously though, I didn't really like the remote or nunchucks. I'm definitely a pad guy :D I also think another problem was it was the children's machine so it was kept downstairs in the front room where as my gaming consoles are kept in my man cave. If i'm also honest, with not playing a lot of the Wii due the where it was situated, I only saw glimpses of it and probably didn't give it a chance.

This was me a month ago! I cancelled the PS4 preorder I'd placed during E3 and got the Wind Waker pack. It entirely depends on how many games you need to have to justify the purchase. For me Wind Waker, 3D World, Monster Hunter, Pikmin, The Wonderful 101 and New Super Mario Bros U were worth it now with the bonus of the promise of Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country early in the new year. I can't imagine they'll fuck any of those up. The 3DS has easily been the console of the year based mainly on first-party titles so I have faith in Nintendo to deliver something special in 2014 now they can free some resource from that platform for a bit too, even if some of that is HD remakes of GameCube stuff it's more appealing than a lot of what I see on the other playforms.

Also you really need to play the Mario Galaxy games, come on man. More invention and creativity in 90 minutes than anything else this generation has managed in its duration.
