Nintendo Wii U

I'd be up for joining a wee group!

I had problems with the tray balance game on Wii Fit U. I couldn't get my Mii to hardly move. I was trying all manner of stepping motions. I bet I looked a right twat.

I'm taking the fit meter down the gym tonight. Should produce some interesting data.

I've just been playing that (and unlocked a snazzy waiter's costume!); I mostly walk by shifting my weight from one foot to the other like I'm doing a penguin impression. I think that game is pretty fun!

Alright, selling my PS4 preorder and fully intending to get a Wii U before Xmas. I just have a few question if I may:

I believe it will let me play Wii games. Xenoblade is on my wish list in particular. I also believe I cannot use the tablet controller, but can I use the pro controller thing (the one that looks like a 'normal' pad)?

How many hours use would I get from the controller before it needs a charge, also can it be plugged in while I continue to play?

Kids games. Obviously there's the upcoming 3D Mario, anything else out now or before Xmas that a 4 and 7 year old might enjoy? For reference they enjoy the Lego games, F1 Race Stars, Animal Crossing etc.

How likely is a Zelda or Mario + premium console for £200 in the next month or so?

Thanks!

You'll get about 3-5 hours out of the pad's normal battery.

I don't think you can use the Pro Controller on Wii games. You have to use Wii specific controllers.

Kids games - Lego City Undercover is brilliant. NSMBU is also excellent. Sonic Racing Transformed is also worth a shout. They may go for Pikmin 3 as well.

Zelda+ Mario+premium for £200 is unlikely, IMO.

You can use the classic controller pro, which is pretty close to the pro controller really. And the Wiimote just runs on AAs so as many batteries as you can get your hands on.

Have a look on the eShop for titles for kids, if either of them like drawing then there's that Art Academy sketchpad (a taster before the full retail release) and with Miiverse and stuff, they can actually save their drawings and share them.

If they like Animal Crossing then download the free AC Plaza, it looks stunning and it's just a nice little touch really.

It switches the machine into 'Wii' mode, so you can use any of the original controller configs, but nothing new.

Do you mean the Gamepad? If so, about 5 hours. Yes you can play with it plugged in if you want to. You can also now buy an official bigger battery which ups it a bit if needed. I find that I just keep it on the charging cradle (which is inlcuded in the premium set) and it's always ready-to-go.

Well Lego City Undercover is an obvious one - it's great. F1 Race Stars (since you mention it, never played it myself) is going to be out on the eShop pretty soon I think (before xmas I heard). You might also want to take a look at NintendoLand (everyone loves tag!), Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, Zelda WW HD, Wii Party U, Lego Batman/Marvel, Mario & Sonic at the WInter Olympics, Just Dance, Scribblenauts, even Tank Tank Tank is fun if you can find it cheap enough.

How likely is a Zelda or Mario + premium console for £200 in the next month or so?

I belive Zelda + premium has already been up for £200 from Play at one point - but they went (or they realised) pretty fast. Who knows what will happen once the PS4/XBOne are out really though.

Thanks peeps. Forgot about Lego Undercover, my boy has asked before about that :) That Art academy looks great for my daughter too.

Bit of a shame about the controller situation though. Can see myself having to get a few wii motes, classic controller pro a wii u pad etc. probably a balance board for the missus too!

Getting a work discount card next month so can wait a bit longer

Wii Party U comes with a Wiimote Plus, obviously Wii Fit U has a version with a balance board as well as the Fit Meter. If Wii Sports Club gets a disc release I'd bet it also comes with a Wiimote Plus, so you could get at least two with games that the kids would enjoy.

You might want to hold off on a Pro Controller. I think Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is the big draw for one, otherwise I honestly haven't felt like I needed one either for Wii U games or Virtual Console.

Full disclosure: I've only got NSMBU, Nintendo Land and Pikmin 3 at the moment but I'll be picking up a lot of games next year.

I saw someone say Asda had the pro controllers for 12quid recently. Dunno if that's true. I got one from there for 20 a couple of months back though, which is still cheap. I've never used it but it's basically sitting there waiting until Smash Bros arrives.

Nintendoland is an absolute, definite must have, by the way. You definitely need the additional Wii Remotes to get the most out of it but there's lots of accessible and hilarious family fun to be had.

Wii Fit U is more serious than I'd been led to believe. Once I got over the fear of the potential feet that had been on my eBay-purchased balance board I had a lot of fun with it though. And I have the fit meter and I walk more than basically anybody so hopefully that'll make up for all the stuff I'm bad at. Would be well up for a wee group thing. How do people use it - just select a random series of events to fill 20 minutes in a day or something?

Chris: I think having the Fit Meter will encourage you more than solely using the app. For the sake of £20 I think your potential gains will be much greater.

Example: Until recently I had a NikeFuel band and used it to track my movement every day from the day I got it until I sent it back last month to be repaired (it's still there).

I got really into not only reaching my targets, but increasing them, then utterly smashing them. I was always a bit annoyed when I fell short, even to the point of going on extra runs, jogging on the spot or doing a few hundred (yes) star jumps in the evening before bed. I actually miss having the feedback there every day to encourage me to get up and move.

It's akin to having a daily high score challenge and it's fun and addictive.

I'm hoping the Wii Fit Meter will encourage me and others to do the same.

Yes, I did the same with my iPod shuffle/Nike thing, though the Nike web site was atrocious at the time.

Had BF4 already this month, and the car has had it's MOT, so the fit meter will have to wait a couple of weeks :'(

Is there a way to stop the fit meter registering steps for a time? It seems far too sensitive. I was on a shoogly bus this morning for an hour and it registered loads of steps... so, this morning it's registering 241kcal burned and 3293 steps.. which is completely unpossible between my walk to the bus, walk from bus to train, then train to office. The little MET chart has lots of activity while I was sitting on the train.

U jokers!

My sister told me yesterday I could have all her Wiimotes and some old Wii games (Galaxy 1 and 2, bunch of other stuff). I bought the Wind Waker bundle with Nintendoland chucked in for £250. I know it's been cheaper elsewhere but I was a bit depressed and needed some retail therapy.

Heh, it's probably Nintendo's master plan*! Just be a safe option where you can buy games that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, plus you know kids will get in on the act too.

They really need to bring out a purple Wii U, though.

*in the last week or so.

Nice one :D Wind Waker HD is brilliant - it looks gorgeous, but it plays even better. It reminds me of why I used to love Zelda games so much before Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword came along. I really hope that the next console one is a return to form, but judging by how awesome A Link Between Worlds looks, I have a feeling it will be. Also check out Zombi U if you can find it cheap, I haven't really gotten that far into it but it seems cool, with some nice Dark Souls-esque ideas and it's certainly something different. Other than that, don't look in this thread too often until Mario 3D World is released, no matter how happy you are with your Wii U. All the talk about Wii Fit U and the like makes for pretty grim reading and it will give you flashbacks to the very worst of the Wii era despite the Wii U being really good on its own merits.
