Nintendo Wii U

The Wii sold almost 15 million in its first year, but I doubt we'll see anything like that. The 360 and the PS3 sold about 7 million each in their first years, but they were a year apart, so god knows what'll happen with the two of them launching on top of each other.

They must be hoping software sales stay high on the XBox 360 and PS3 for the next year or more.

Ps3 and 360 did 5 million, not 7 million in their first years.

The Wii didn't have the attach rate Sony and MS would be looking for, did it? And didn't the 360 have exclusive online Madden or something which sold it in the US? Though you're right, the year's difference is huge. You could've easily had (speculating here) people who bought a 360, got a year out of it then traded in for a PS3.

I think you are being somewhat conservative if you think that Microsoft and Sony, between them can't shift more than 4-5 Million within one year at best, the overlap with the Nintendo audience is fairly minor, as EA and other trad game sales shows. I know some people might be pinning their hopes on such an outcome to say "See, shoulda hedged your bets", but they already did, much like on the Wii, and decided throwing good money after bad is not a useful risk hedge, better off chasing after the mobile market with those extra millions.

Nintendo originally forecast that many hardware sales by March of this year for comparison, for their console alone, which in itself was a lower forecast than they had for the original Wii before launch.

I didn't mean between them, I mean each. There are, what, 150m PS360s out there? And the big titles like FIFA and CoD do approximately 10% of that?

So if you've got at best 10m next gen machines, assuming early adopters make up the same sort of demographics (and they won't), 10% of that is hardly going to make the big bucks. So either they're not going balls out on that development or more worryingly they are and will try and take the hit.

If you're going to have longer tails then you're going to have slower uptake and transitions.

Yes, it's hard not to be excited for the Wii U at the moment. I'm certainly glad I have one. There are definitely some next-gen launch games on the way that I want to play (Resogun, Killer Instinct), but nothing screams joy like Wonderful 101 or Mario 3D World do.

The whole point of chasing after early adopters is that they buy disproportionately huge amounts of software, look at the Wii U, the official attach rate is 4-5 at present, yet most Wii U owners on here are likely to have exceeded that average game buying rate I presume. Over a console lifetime, you're lucky if the average new software buy rate much exceeds 10, no console has ever past 17 games per console sold yet, but an early adopter will buy significantly more than that average, probably a significant chunk of that number within the first year alone.

The X360 had the bulk of the ravenous consumers last generation (In the major English speaking markets anyway), Sony is looking like they'll manage to snag back a portion of those this round. Get the hardcore to build the base, the sheep will follow over time, that's the historical trend for every successful console.

I unboxed the Zelda Wii U bundle this morning, and set everything up including downloading the game. Now it's been packed away, not to be seen again until Christmas day. Man, that was hard.

This man deserves a round of applause.

What other games will you have lined up for Christmas morning?

I need to do this too, how long did it take roughly? Need to do it when the kids are out of the house!

It took me 3 hours last night from taking it out of the box, installing updates, setting up a Nintendo ID, downloading and then installing Wind Waker. This games looks magnificent! I've not seen a better looking game.

In an astonishing display of willpower, I have had my Wii U Premium pack and Pikmin 3 in the wardrobe totally untouched since mid July waiting for the big day.

The girlfriend is getting me WW HD and SM 3D world. My plan is to leave it updating while I do the obligatory family visiting.
