Nintendo Wii U

It's all about the controls. Both Wave Race 64 and 1080 had really simple and completely perfect controls. Which were then messed about with in order to "improve" them for the sequels.

This.

Played Blue Storm and Avalanche last week; it's depressing how clunky Blue Storm's controls are (exacerbated by the need to use the shoulder triggers to manage many of the corners) after Wave Race 64 did so much by itself to demonstrate the precision of the N64's analogue controller. All you needed there was the thumbstick and A or Z to accelerate, and marvellous it was. IMO Avalanche was a better update than Blue Storm was, but still feels 'off' quite significantly at times.

I thought the Riptide GP games were pretty good. While obviously not as good as waverace, they are probably the best water racing based games I've played in years!

I was playing a 3DS WaveRace clone - it's ok for a wee blast, but not being able to pull back and really dig in while turning makes a huge difference.

No one has done a water based racing game like it yet... C'mon Nintendo.

I bought wind waker HD and have to say I think it is terrific. I loved the original on the gamecube, but I have to say it looks even more "cartoony" on the wii u, which is a nice change of pace from all the ultra realistic graphics of other games. Also the kids love it. My little boy now wants to be Link and is running about with a foam sword and going "Hyup" every time he climbs up on something. I am certain I caught him "sidling" round the kitchen earlier.

Edit: I am quite excited for Batman: Akrham Origins. It seems to be £38 on game.co.uk

That sounds brilliant

WW does look just amazingly good. Why oh why some parts of the world who thought it looked too cartoony were listened to, I really don't understand.

At least Nintendo seem to have embraced the blue sky gaming a bit more in recent times.

If I recall, it came up against a period of people preferring gritty games and so looked a bit childish. It maybe didn't help that it came out on gamecube either as that didn't sell all that well, despite loving my own.

Was there some kind of thing where people were angry that they were shown a version at spaceworld that had a more realistic visual style like a continuation of ocarina of time and then it turned out to be a cell shaded toon style game and it wasn't as popular?

I just recall having to really hunt a copy down, and finally paid over the odds for it because it was the only one I could get and it came with ocarina of time master quest on another disc.

An hour isn't really enough to work out Wii Karaoke U. I tried singing through the gamepad mic and it wasn't registering unless I held the thing right at my mouth.... I thought there was a mode where you could read the lyrics off the pad??

In other news, it's got a massive library of songs to pick from... Including Megadeth!

Oh man, I've got to get that then just to embarrass the kids with my Dave Mustaine impersonation.

Wii games look really good on the gamepad; Wiimote responds well up close, too. Pleasantly surprised so far.

How does this work? I thought you'd still have to point your wiimote at the sensor bar under the telly.

Feels like a missed opportunity not to be able to play it with the game pad though :( there are a few wii games id like to go back to, but still having to use a wiimote sounds a bit fiddly. Hopefully the game pad will be able to emulate the wii pro controller soon.

Why is it better to play it like that on the game pad rather than the tv?

Well now I realise my assumption about still having to point at the telly was wrong, this sounds all kinds of amazing. So all our Wii games and nearly all our Wii U games are now playable off-TV. One less thing for the kids to fall out over!

It's not fiddly at all. Plus some games, like Galaxy wouldn't work without the Wiimote even if you could use Gamepad controls. It's designed for Wiimote!

It's not better than TV, it's another option for when the TV is in use.

Oh c'mon! It's not fiddly? Please. The majority of people won't bother with the feature because it absolutely is fiddly.

Nintendo should put a team on it and make sure the feature is properly implemented. For instance, your Galaxy example. The collecting of bits could be achieved by touching the touch screen. Even if Nintendo just took the view of making sure their games were compatible that would suffice. Or came up with some sort of function/button mapping program which players could utilise.
