Nintendo Wii U

There's no denying it does look loads better. The problem is for me the most obvious one, I've played it before.

This has kind of asumed the mantle of WiiUs headline title until the arrival of mario kart but I think that because it's a remake it's not strong enough to carry that weight. Perhaps mario land will blow us all away but that just seems a sideways step to the 3ds title, which I felt it suited far better.

WW hd will always appear to me to be a knee jerk reaction to bulk out Nintendos release schedule. Maybe they'll get new fans in because of it but having to invest in a new console around the time of the proper next gen release is asking a lot of the title. An aggressive 2 year dev time for a WW sequel (art style already locked down/game mechs in place/asset reuse) would have been a far better idea and just shows how out of step Nintendo are with their planning. Now that would have got me tempted to get a wiiu.

No, no no. The very last thing they need to do is rush a big-brand title to the market and release it when it's anything less than the usual Nintendo standard. A sub-par new Zelda right now would really stick the knife in on the fans that have stuck with them (and are being rewarded with titles that were clearly worth delaying to get right like Pikmin 3 and W101 right now).

I don't see the WW re-release as their flagship title at all - we've got a new 3D Mario on the way this year - when have they ever been anything other than fantastic?

As incredible as it looks (and it really does look incredible), Wind Waker HD just doesn't strike me as very good value. If you compare it to other recent HD remakes you usually get two or three titles and at a discounted price. Fuck me, Wind Waker is probably vying with Ocarina of Time as my second favourite in the series and even I can't really be bothered with it.

You are, unless you think that one developed on an 'aggressive 2 year' cycle is likely to be able to match the previous ones which have taken substantially longer than that to develop?

I most certainly do. Like I said, with the art style locked/mechanics/assets upgraded etc, a 2 year cycle could have been achieved.

You obviously don't think so though so we'll agree to disagree.

I'm hinging my guess on the fact that it usually takes them about 3-5 years to develop a home console Zelda title, and it's taking them well over a year just to re-release WW in HD even.

I think it's a bit of stretch to suggest they can do a brand new, brilliant HD one in less than 1-2 yeah.

Still, yeah opinions and all that so we're both wrong and both right at the same time :)

No your timings are sound but as I said, 2 years should be about achievable given the template is already set down for them. A huge amount of time is eaten up by art style and direction, asset creation, game mechanics, control timings etc.

Seeing ww in HD just goes to show how powerful its art style actually was in the first place. Ally that with a new quest and you'd have a really compelling reason to purchase a wiiu this year. Above and beyond the diehards who'd purchase the remake. And they already own wiius.

When the new 3DS one comes out they'll have released 7 Zeldas in ten years (plus a few remakes and spinoffs). That's a lot of zeldas.

They should probably be slowing down and releasing less of them instead not more

You can hardly compare the main console Zelda games to their portable counterparts and even with this remake since its original release in 2003 there have only been two home console releases, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

But who counts the DS ones? Twilight Princess to Skyward Sword was a meaty wait.

A wait for something horrendous, but still.

edit: Ryodi already made my point, oh well.

deKay, on 04 Sept 2013 - 17:37, said:Well, NFSMWU is just amazing. Utterly blown away by the graphics.

Was playing Burnout Paradise on the PC, with full detail, and this is waaaaay ahead of that graphically.

It's way beyond Forza Horizon too.

It does look good but I felt that is was to much like burnout paradise with real cars . If you can find it splinter cell looks good on the wii u as well.

Skyward Sword anyone?

Wind Waker does look a lot better to be fair. The last time I booted it up on the GameCube I was pretty shocked at how blurry everything that wasn't immediately in front of you looked. At least they've fixed that.

Got NfS MW a few months back thanks to a nice deal, I was pretty impressed by the game. I hate the horrible Cops A.I. (seriously, they just want to crash) but overall I liked it a lot better than Burnout Paradise. Shame the game hardlocks every now and then when switching back from Miiverse.

My Wii U gets some pretty decent playtime during last month/start of this month; NfS MW, Ducktales Remastered, Pikmin 3, the Wonderful 101... feels good.

For the first time since I've bought it, my Game Pad actually ran out of battery whilst playing it tonight. I didn't even realise it had been 4 hours or however long it's supposed to last.

Rayman Legends :)

Then again this is going to suck when Zelda comes along. How much does the new battery they sell supposed to extend it for?

From what was said it should add a couple of hours. Basically goes from about 3 hours to five ish.

Didn't they smash out Majora's Mask in just over 12 months? If you've already got all the WW assets then surely it will only take a year to design the world and dungeons? Just saying.

I was never a fan of WW, it's probably my least favourite as I prefer epic continents, and I never thought the ocean setting was utilised as well as in say, Skies of Arcadia (I know that's a sky, not the ocean... but you know what I mean. I wanted more deap-sea horrors and dungeons).

Playing The Last Of Us I was balanced between my headphones stretched over to my amp and my controller charging off to my right...the fear of pulling one of them out was worse than them mushroom monsters. Being able to plug my headphones into the Wii U gamepad is so freeing. They should put that in their next advertising push...oh right...

But this is pretty much what they're doing. When they announced WW HD they said they were testing using WW graphics for the new Zelda in development, so made HD versions. And thought, might as well do WW in HD while we're at it.

£149 / £199 again, this time at Waitrose Food & Home stores:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/wii-u-premium-199-basic-149-waitrose-food-home-1648064

Although not a major player in the gaming sector, it's another retailer clearing it out. Nintendo need to be aggressive and offer the console to stores for £100 or less if they want it stocked prominently outside of Game come Christmas.

Given the complete lack of push up until this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they let it cruise along until 2015 or so and then start again. How viable they believe the platform to be will become obvious over the next month or so, via the Christmas advertising blitz + retailer tie-ins (or lack of).
