Then I tried ME3. Happily played for 3 hours via Off TV play. I thought the quality of the image was superb and the entire experience was, essentially, like playing a full fat console game on a "handheld" which is what I wanted.

The Gamepad is great isn't it...once you get one in your hands, it makes much more sense.

Though I thought the hardware (and indeed the experience) of using it was fun and satisfying, I think it's a sub £200 device. Yes, I was enormously pleased with ME3 on the pad, and I think the entire thing has a breezy, punkish attitude that I like, but ultimately it has a vague toy-like air which I think would be best served by a significantly lower RRP.

I can't for the life of me understand this though. Your opinion, so obviously not wrong, but it just flies in the face of your previous stuff. It's no more 'toy-like' than any other console.

I'm trying to not let it bother me, but the screen not fitting my Samsung TV properly is really starting to bother me.

Set your TV's display mode to Screen Fit:

Screen Fit: This mode is used to display an image with no scaling. It provides a 1:1 pixel mapping of the incoming signal on the TV's screen. This mode is only available with a 1080p, 1080i, or 720p signal.

Don't use the built in scaling on the Wii U since you're still going to be losing about 5% of the image of every other source into your TV if you don't disable the overscan on your TV.

Thanks, I'll see what the update has done - last time the picture was too big for the TV and no changes via the TV would fix it. You could make the screen smaller via the Wii U for the store but not for games. If they've fixed this then great, if not I'll just deal with having things like maxed health bars and that slightly hidden off screen. Meant to be a Samsung problem from what I read at the time on various forums - this was a while ago mind you.

Yes, I perhaps didn't explain that well. I'm just contrasting the feel and heft of the hardware compared to when I first took a Vita, an original chubby PS3, my Touchpad (originally a £400 device before the fire sale) or any other high quality electrical device out of the packaging for the first time and held it in my hands. I'm aware practically any electronic device is basically a manchild dummy, but the WiiU doesn't quite have the cut and finish of a really top level bit of kit. It has the vague air of a Leappad about it - which is fine - for the demographic that makes a lot of sense, I'm just saying when you range the look and feel against a £250 bit of kit today it's a little plasticy and lacking. Overall when you add in the feel of the UI it's a fun, quirky little device that tootles and bootles away happily - but I think it's too expensive at RRP. I'm not ashamed to be using it or anything and I'm not complaining about the quality of the device, its just a perception thing.

It is a Samsung problem, if you do what I suggested it will fix overscan for every device you use on your TV, set the zoom mode to Screen Fit.

So I got Pokemon Rumble U from the game website. They mailed me the code and the rest is in the post which is neat.

I really like the feel of it. Sure it's not got any depth or story etc but as a 'loads going on' brawler it's fun and kids will love it. It has that shiny Nintendo charm and I like the way the Pokemon are styled as toys.

The NFC feature does seem neat. The way you upgrade and change the moves on the figure itself meaning you can take your figure to other Wii u's (as if) to use. Just the action of boosting it up and putting it back on the shelf when done is very satisfying.

Anyway. I reckon if you have kids who like Pokemon for £20 with a couple of figures it's a good buy.

It does seem a bit of a missed opportunity for it not to be bundled for free with the console. In many ways this could be a system seller for families with kids. A Pokemon game, where money can be made from the capsule toys, and making use of the Wii U gamepad for NFC. Hell, do a special edition Pokemon-branded Wii U basic console with the Pokemon Rumble game and a few toys for around £150, and you have a Christmas bestselling toy on your hands. Add a link up feature with the 3DS to allow streetpass battles and taking their characters to their friends' houses, and you have something truly exciting for kids.

It looks as though it does a similar thing to Skylanders, but with Pokemon characters and at a fraction of the cost. Plus a larger roster of characters and no requirement to buy the figures.

My pokeymen arrived yesterday. My daughter thinks the game is The Best Thing Ever, and since her Kyurem is at 2200-odd she is defeating even bosses with one hit. I got Mewtwo, who, after just 6 fights, is already underpowered. Thankfully you can upgrade it.

My copy of Splinter Cell arrived today - three levels in and I'm impressed with this version. Frame rate is fine, no screen tearing that I've noticed, and great gamepad integration. Lets hope Ubisoft patch it for offline co-op. it's so good that 101 has only had the briefest of look-ins - but I can report that the mission stages are great fun. My 6 year old and I had an hour or so running through the first mission, me on the gamepad and him on the pro controller. Smooth, fun and easy to control - my kid could draw the shapes needed for fists, guns and a whip with no probs.....

There's a staggering list of moves to customise your Pokemon with in Rumble U but unless I've missed something the game itself is so much lighter than Rumble that there's not much point. Packing in the

final boss of the game

as a playable character in the special edition just makes the figure-buying aspect seem purely a novelty and £4 feels a bit piss-takey for buying a gamble. My daughter loves it.

Not just bitter that I can't buy a Psyduck :quote:

Why does it make it purely a novelty?

Genuinely interested as I've never played rumble before.

2 good wiiu games on the same day. I would have liked to get Splinter cell because Ubisoft seem to have actually spent some time on it. Maybe next month then. They do need to ge that patch out though. Apparently the sceen tearing on the 360 version is terrible. Makes me think that considering nearly all WiiU games are vsynced there must be some painless way of activating it. Vsync on PC's can kill framerates.

I played a little Zombie-U. I'm not a huge horror fan, but I was curious about the multi-screen implementation. Firstly, I was shocked at how.... I don't know.... cohesive (?) it was for a launch game. I assumed it would look like dogshit and play terribly, but it seemed very confident and well put together. However, I did really struggle with the multiple screen implementation. I was a little bit tired, so I'll give it another go tonight, fresh, but I found it quite tough to train my brain to concentrate on one or other screen at any one point in time. I quite often browse the internet on a tablet while "watching" TV but this was a step up for that. I suppose it shouldn't be any different to using a DS, but somehow it was. Anyway, it was a very unique and interesting experience. Yeah.

Also continued playing ME3. It remains wildly impressive - the fidelity and experience on the pad. I just love it. I hated ME3 on 360, and only got a few hours in, but somehow, sprawled on my back on the sofa, with my face filled with Sheppard it all.... works. I love it.

Pokemon U is an odd one. Doesn't seem to be a lot of... game.... there, but I think my kids will like it. Still, they don't get the system till Xmas, it's daddy's until then. Quite usefully the off TV play means I've hidden it upstairs, so they can't find it, but I can still play it! Maybe French walls are shitter than UK walls, but the range is quite good for me.

Is splinter cell out yet?

That Pokemon game sounds interesting. Not seen any advertising for It at all and wouldn't know it existed if not for the forum.

Loads of TV ads for it on Sky One over the last week or so. Mailshots from Nintendo and Game about it too.

So, anyone got the 30% off W101 offer today? Having got a Game download code?

The 30% off offer worked for me... I did have to send a complaint email to Nintendo but I got both the premium points and the offer in the end. It cost somewhere in the region of £27 which is quite a nice saving.
