Nintendo Wii U

I got my points sorted from my early GAME d/l code, so that made me a happy bunny.

Annoyingly though, I'm also strangely tempted to get Splinter Cell in Wii U just because I hope they put in some clever uses like they did with the Cube version of SC but for some reason I haven't watched the video about it yet... trying to surprise myself perhaps.

They couldn't be any more different if they tried though and I should probably wait for an inevitable £10 reduction in price in about a week after release for Splinter Cell anyway. Payday week and the missus away at the weekend though, dangerous combo.

The attitude of a lot of reviewers to The Wonderful 101 is really depressing. When it comes to original ideas and control schemes these days, it seems to be a case of 'if at first you don't succeed, give up and call it broken'. It's Zombi U and Kid Icarus Uprising all over again... And yes, I've played the demo a few times, and anyone saying it's unplayable or that the touch imputs don't register properly is 100% talking out of their arse.

Can you play wii u games on the gamepad without connecting the console to a TV?

Also, do disk games generally need to be installed/patched, like ps3 games etc. I'm trying to figure out just how useless the 8gb version is. If I just plan on buying/playing the disc versions of games, is it enough?

Not all games but lots of games can be played without a TV. The console can certainly be operated without a TV.

Games don't install. You'll be fine with the smaller one unless you plan on buying full games digitally. And even then you can get an external drive which you'd need anyway if you buy a lot of digital games.

Thanks, that sounds good. With the patches, I guess I could just delete them once I'm finished with the game, so it's not that big a deal.

This thing really appeals to me, mainly/entirely due to the ability to play games on the gamepad as opposed to hogging the tv.

I'm surprised there aren't more married men out there getting these to play while sitting beside their tv watching wives, thus maintaining the illusion of sociability ;)

I can't imagine going off to a different room to play long games etc in the evening after work, it would just feel antisocial, but playing console games on the tablet is ideal, . I like being in the same room as my wife in the evening, but I don't like her choice of TV show ;)

I think this and my vita should be enough to keep me happy for the foreseeable future.

Also, Mario Kart looks great, so I'm considering just getting the wii u in the near future as opposed to waiting for MK, since it's already relatively inexpensive here.

My wife is not a gamer, but we used to play gamecube mario kart together a lot and she sometimes looks at the ps3 and asks me "are there any fun games like mariokart for that". I'm pretty sure the answer is "not really". There's probably some inferior karting game which would immediately lose points just for not having peach and donkey kong and the mario kart charm ;) I didn't own a wii and never played wii mario kart , so I suppose that could keep us entertained for a while until the new one comes out.

Sorry for the blog entry guys.

I can feel this new wave of people now wanting a Wii U, now that there's a few unmissable games. The past week with my new toy has been ace. Miiverse is utterly underrated, it's such a brilliant way to connect you to other players. It really promotes creativity and sharing, plus it is actually a pleasant place to be.

Definitely get one, partious. The off TV stuff is perfectly done. The other thing that I'm surprised works so well is controlling your TV with the Gamepad. So much better being able to change the volume and TV input without having to go searching for the TV remote.

Scott's mentioned it a bunch of times, but he gets negged or mocked because he's not a real human being, just a fanboy persona on the internet.

The TV remote functionality is dead handy too, being able to turn the telly on and to the right input without finding the remote, or a quick TV, Input, Input to go back to the big screen when the wife nips out to the loo or to make a cuppa. Could do with a standard way to switch screens, though, such as a button on the TV remote overlay to choose what you want to use as your main screen. In Zen Pinball 2, you swipe up or down on the pad, but in Monster Hunter you have to delve into options menus and specify mirroring the main display on the controller (which is user-friendlily called "Type 2").

The internet browser's great on the tablet, too. I'm always popping onto Kiranico while playing Monster Hunter, or letting the kids take turns at picking YouTube videos to watch on the telly while I surf away on the controller. Tabbed browsing works brilliantly, too, pressing and holding to open links in a new tab.

They're not killer I-must-have-this-console-now features, but they're... nice.

I was sifting through Wii-U titles in a Dover game shop today - am I missing something? Off TV play, for me, is a KILLER feature. Yet the boxes don't seem to list what aspects of the Wii-U functionality the game takes advantage of. But perhaps it was just the limited selection I glanced at.

Anyway, I'm back in France now after a UK trip and I'll set it up tomorrow. I have a Premium, Pro Pad, Pokemon Rumble U, Zombie U and ME3 (which I own on 3 platforms, but might actually finish with the OffTV feature). EXCITED.

It's really a very good console and I'm a 33 year old man that's seen all of the consoles of note.

If you don't like it then I'm afraid you're being a bit daft. At the moment, yes you can't play CoD and it's possibly not as powerful as it could have been but really, if you ever owned or enjoyed the Cube, this (IMHO) is the console the Wii should have been.

It's got novelty waggle stuff and easy ways of playing things (for the kids - possibly in your own family now) but at the same time, it's got that amazing polish (Nintendo Seal of qualityLOL before someone else says it) and level of depth that very few games on any system have. It's undeniably lacking in some breadth at the moment but you'd be a fool to not buy one, especially as new Mario Land will be great as will Kart and probably Smash Bros. (if you like that sort of thing). Other things will come too. Obv.

Yes, it might be 'all the same' but really, is CoD - I don't even know what number they're on, 10? - very different to 2, or 3 MP aside? On that note, the MP although quite addictive, is just plain and simple nowhere near as fun, or even playable with 5 people at the same time in the same room. Is FIFA 13/14 all that different from 09, really? NSMBU for example looks like Mario World, or 3 or whatever in HD but is AMAZINGLY well balanced and playable by all ages and skill.

Dismissing the WiiU as 'Nintendo doing the same again' is a real shame, if any of the games on the WiiU came out on other formats, without the Mario branding and by unknown teams, or some sort of industry darling, EDGE and the likes of so called "serious and mature" gamers, would have all shat themselves with joy and wonderment about how well they are made, as GAMES.

TL; DR Just go and buy one. Don't be precious, or a silly graffix whore, if you like gaming as a hobby and playing actual games rather than upgraded Dragon's Lair, or 'Interactive Movies' then you should buy one.
