Nintendo Wii U

I bought and used a Game Pikmin code yesterday and my points are there.

Technically that wasn't 'early' so maybe that's why we're getting stitched up. I wait ten years and then I couldn't even wait another two days and I didn't even have much time to play them on those two days. Eejit.

I finally bought a Wii U (yay!) and I've really been enjoying Pikmin 3. However, it seems like a rather noisy system... I can hear it quite loudly from across the room, is that normal? Mine's easily as loud as my PS3 slim (possibly louder) even when it's just idling. Then when I insert a disc it gets even louder as the drive spins up and stays like that. I'm inclined to think that it's not normal, but I don't have any frame of reference for it.

It's a bit like this (not my video) - but obviously I'm not this close to it - I'm about 10 feet away:

Damn. I thought that might be the case. I originally put in in the cupboard where the PS3 lives, but the gamepad signal is so weak that it kept dropping out whilst we were playing Nintendoland. It was literally two feet behind our sofa on the other side of an internal brick wall :(

Considering the PS3 and 360 have worked flawlessly like that for five years it's pretty jarring going back to hairdryer noises whilst gaming.

Mine is nothing like that noisy, only thing i can hear is the disc drive - none of the consoles are quiet but the wii u is vastly quieter than the 360 and similar to the ps3. Its the least annoying noise as long as there is not a disc in it.

I find it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm playing something really CPU intensive such as Sonic Allstars Racing it's pretty noisy, but if it's Donkey Kong it's pretty quiet.

It's just a noise of the fans, but mine doesn't sound like the one in the video clip.

With respect, I don't think you should be shouldering the blame here. I'd contact Game first, given that they sent out the codes. Perhaps move on to Nintendo afterwards. I think it would help to pit the companies against each other, so to speak. More chance of them realising that there's been a cock-up that isn't really the fault of the consumer.

Yeah I was actually thinking of contacting Game and just playing the fool in regards to buying it early. Just saw that it was on the site so thought it must be out, didn't realise I would be unduly 'punished' for it, oh woe is me, yadda yadda. Got to be worth a pop, I'm fairly sure there wasn't even any small print on the site stating that it would do this so I think I'm probably in the right and game is more at fault technically, for breaching release date. See what happens.

The variable noise sounds like something down to variability in the quality of the cooling fan used, the fan is also of a small diameter, which doesn't help, the pro trick that Microsoft used was to follow Sony's example with the PS3 and move to a bigger, slower turning fan to cut the noise level of the X360, as the X360 originally had much smaller diameter fans, which were a byproduct of their target form factor, something Microsoft have obviously taken to heart as the X1 has a bloody huge fan to ensure low noise levels.

I'd think about taking it back if you bought it from a shop and seeing if they will swap it out for a replacement with a more normal performing fan.

Keep in mind that only 100 outlets ever stocked it in the first place. As for the online, I don't believe they've ever stocked a post-launch title, so this is just a case of a retailer that hasn't bought any new stock since 2012 running out at last.

Articles like the Eurogamer one really epitomise the shoddy state of gaming journalism to me. It's just lazy, and doesn't even attempt to provide any context.

I believe CVG actually broke the story, although I know what you mean about EG.

As for the number of stores that stocked it, I'm not sure it really matters, if those stores were selling enough to keep doing so, they would do. They've reduced it twice and it's seemingly not changed anything in regards to take up, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing this.

The Gamecube had this problem, with several chains removed that from sale due to low sales. Of course you could argue that one chain doesn't mean a whole lot, but it's hardly a good sign for a struggling machine.

My local Asda started stocking it at some point after launch, but it was just a selection of launch games. They never got Lego City or Monster Hunter in. And the pricing wasn't great either. Given how well the console is doing in general, I'm not surprised that they're dropping it.

Except for the fact that both times they've reduced the premium console bundle down to £199 they've sold out within days. They are not stuck with stock they can't shift - they actually re-stocked after the first-time and sold out again.

It's a curious one - because if they can afford to shift it out at £199/£149 then clearly the market is there for them to sell some units.

Tekken is definitely worth a punt at that price. It's a pretty amazing game with a load of content, including additional Wii U exclusive modes and daft Nintendo costumes. Huge character roster and the option of playing as a single character instead of two if you want something closer to the classic Tekken experience.

There's no single player content that rivals the enjoyably dreadful Tekken Force style modes of old but there is a somewhat entertaining tutorial style mode with a customisable robot and the usual selection of wacky Tekken CG endings. The (free) DLC characters from the PS3/360 versions are unlocked on the disc as standard too. It's also a pretty game. You can also fight in the Trevi fountain, like a very pissed off Marcello Mastroianni. Or be a bear.
