Because its the only kart racing game there has been....

Well, yes, Super Mario Kart matched the 'short tracks, lots of laps, powersliding' formula of real karting that the rest of the series hasn't. Mario Kart 64 didn't, apart from a few tracks. Sort of. Still, I'll admit that I never played SMK much at the time other than the battle mode.

Would really like a proper back-to-basics Mario Kart, BTW. Less weapons, shorter, more intense tracks that don't feel like fairground rides, no wacky vehicles...

what about super circuit? Small tight tracks.

I also think mario kart ds was my most played mario kart - really liked that game - perhaps because it was the first true online mario kart.

I find it difficult to go back to it though after playing the newer ones though ( for graphics reasons mainly).

I don't think any of the Mario Karts are actually bad it's just that people want different things from them. Personally, I don't think battle mode has been bettered since the SNES, I think ever since DD they should have the option to play co-op a la double dash, I think there should be small tight tracks and wider wacky ones for different types of racing and races. I think they should have the feather back in. I like the hang gliding and the underwater stuff (again, in moderation or for different types of races). I love the ghost & time trial stuff from MKWii.

The things that I think they really cock up on every single time is the lack of ruleset customisation if you're playing MP, the almost pointless (or over done) kart customisations and the fact that 50CC is basically no challenge at all.

Annoyingly, I would pretty much bet a bollock that they still won't address any of those points but MK8 will still be a bloody good game, great fun in MP and a challenge to get really good time trial scores.

Having said all that, even with those foibles it's still leagues ahead of many similar games and a fair few racing games and yet every single time, people bitch and moan. Frustrating Nintendo being frustrating again.

I know, but the Nintendo Direct was posted in here and I was far too excited to post in the correct place.

30% off Wonderful 101 eshop version if you buy Pikmin3 on the eshop before a date that I cant remember. Pretty decent stuff.
