Nintendo Wii U

Admittedly, I have little enthusiasm for yet another Mario Kart unless they do something drastically different with it. Like, set it 4000 years in the future in spaceships travelling at 900mph or something. Or hey, a story/challenge mode like Crash Team Racing or Sonic Racing. Something mental. Get Sega to make it in exchange for Nintendo making a Sonic game.

I have no problems with Mario 3D World though. It looks wonderful.

Yes, Mario Kart looks great. As good as Sonic Transformed was, it was just a novelty to have a good kart game that wasn't Mario Kart. It still doesn't compare to proper Mario Kart. 7 was a phenomenal game and building on that seems like a good plan. As long as the time trial leaderboard sharing, and replay sharing, is done well then I'll be utterly obsessed with 8.

So the latest sales figures are out and GAF is on full on 'WiiU is doomed' mode and it's hard to argue with these numbers

The only systems it's outselling both hardware and software wise is the PSP and PS2.

Just to make it clear, I don't care that MK8 does absolutely nothing new because it has those graphics either, mind. But it's hard to argue that doing nothing new is a step forward even with the beautiful graphics.

I guess when you define and own the sub genre its hard to innovate, would you ask a chef to innovate his most prized dish? It's for the competition to innovate rather than blanket copy and even then no one has bettered the best Mario Kart.

I would say that the times Nintendo tried something new in the kart series they have been worse than sticking to the formula (64/double dash vs MK, DS one)

By the way, in case anyone was quietly hopeful and interested in buying something to tide over til Pikmin 3 / Wonderful 101 - Rabbids land is barely worth the £14 I spent on it for the sole purpose of playing it 4P.

There is one game that we found that is actually all 4 at once and that's a 'grab the wiimote (not gamepad, doesn't use the pad at all this one game) as fast as you can at a signal' - quite entertaining in itself but was probably in the Wii Rabbids game.

The majority are all just 1 on 1 and only a few of them are any good. Really rather disappointing and NintendoLand and even NSMBU Coin Battle is better than the whole game. In fact, Mario Chase on it's own is probably better than the whole game. Ah well.

I only bought it because HMV Oxford Street (what was once their flagship store) didn't receive a single copy of Game & Wario.

I find that sort of attitude a bit depressing. I'd expect Reggie to be coming out and saying that, not a fan - surely the 8th game in a series should be looking to innovate in some way?

And for what it's worth I found Crash Team Racing to be far more enjoyable than any MK game I've played (which tbf isn't many, it was mainly the DS one and as someone that's never been a huge Mario/Nintendo fan I found it to be pretty soulless). I honestly think with a lot of games how much of a fan you are is based on how much you enjoyed/played it when you were younger. It's certainly the case for me.

How can 7 be your fav with all the features taken out of the Wii version? The Wii channel pretty much 'made' that version I'd say. When it comes to the tracks themselves, sure, 7 had better designs compared to Wii imo, but I wouldn't blindly state that 7 had everything the series could offer up to that point. It didn't.

My first Mario Kart was Super and the last one I really enjoyed was MK64. I played Super Circuit, MKDS and Double Dash but didn't really get into any of them significantly. MK7 was absolutely brilliant though and I wouldn't disagree with it offering the best of everything.

My first MK was MK64.

My favourite MK is MK7.

Crash team racing? Reallllly?

I'm going to chime in here - I borrowed crash team racing off a mate back in the day ( better than mk64 he said .... Sure) .

Anyway , I thought it was bloody great ! It was balanced much better than mk64 and was a really enjoyable game . The tracks where much better too.

I even thought the looney tunes kart game ( not space race) was not bad , although I can't really remember much of it.

Diddy kong racing was an enjoyable and tough kart game too - the horror of the wizpig races!! Spent a week or so trying to beat him on the last stage , but how amazing did it feel when you finally did beat him !

Mario kart needs a change up , I would like an adventure mode and/or I think it really should do a smash bros of sorts and introduce other characters from nintendos games .

Mario Kart just needs online time trial leaderboards and ghost sharing, they don't need to change anything else. I know I say that every time and it's not really something new since they pretty much nailed it in MK Wii, but they didn't bother with it in MK7 and it completely killed the long term appeal that game could have had. They'd better not cut corners with MK8.

It's the only Mario Kart prior to MK7 that I still like. Can't stand Mario Kart Wii or the DS one. Never got on with the Super NES original at all - I can't for the life of me see why it's always been considered such a classic.

Because its the only kart racing game there has been....

If you haven't played Mario Kart on Snes, I don't think you are actually allowed an opinion on Kart games.

I mean, it's been voted on in the European Court and everything, the reasoning has been tested and found to be legally rock solid.
