Nintendo Wii U

Even SEGA churned out titles for the Dreamcast faster then this. Did they just have more teams and we should keep in mind the fact of the handheld divisions?

Pikmin 3 IS STILL NOT OUT.

Miyamoto also addressed concern and criticism that the company’s E3 showing this year lacked original IP, stating: “When some young in-house developers come up with an idea of a new franchise, I say that creating a new character does not necessarily mean creating a new franchise. In my view, a new way of playing or new use of media is necessary for a “new product” and creating a character is not the first thing to do. In this sense, “nintendogs,” “Brain Age” and “Wii Fit” are all new franchises. Few people see it this way because these games have no symbolic “character” like the existence of Mario, but they are actually contributing to our sales.”

Oh Shigsy...

Nintendogs and Brain Age were new franchises 8 years ago.

At least it wasn't 6-8months from 1 mini-game fest to the next.

Thankfully, we're through that a bit now - there is pretty much one Nintendo release a month from now until into 2014 in Europe:

June - Game & Wario

July - Super Luigi U & Pikmin 3

August - Wonderful 101

September - Erm...

October - Wind Waker HD & Wii Party U

November - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

December - Super Mario 3D World & Wii Fit U & Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games

Early 2014 - Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros

Such a shame to hear that ZombiU has not worked out for Ubisoft financially - I personally loved it and was really hoping for a follow-up that expanded on the concept. I still think it's one of the best demonstations of how the gamepad can bring new things to the table in terms of it's integration in the game.

Honestly, if you own a Wii U and you've not at least tried the ZombiU demo, you really should.

You should really checkout some videos of 3d world. Looks a little different from what I saw in the e3 video. Also appears to have behind Mario camera in single player.

Still don't think it will make me buy the console yet though - smash bros and Mario kart on the other hand..

SA has more going in it then 3D World, where even reggie and other nintendo employees still mistakingly call it 3D land.

3D World has absolutely zero new ideas.

Sonic Team were doing cats back in 98.

Bloody hell neg

What has poor old mario ever done to you

New Super Mario Bros

New Super Mario Bros 2

New Super Mario Bros Wii

New Super Mario Bros U

Super Mario 3D World

Imagine being locked in a room with these titles. I'd rather watch a 24 hour retro marathon of Countdown.

Anyone of those is the best platformer out at that time by a country mile - i dont even like the wii one and its still better than anything anyone else manages to make.

Out of interest, do you have a wii u?

For all of the hoo-ha about Limbo, Super Meat Boy or braid or whatever, not a single one of those games has controls on a par with Mario at it's finest. I didn't actually buy NSMB on Wii or even NSMB 2 on the 3DS but I think I might actually buy the 3DS one because I did buy NSMBU (even if it was because there was basically nothing else to buy) and it really is bloody great.

I'm an old codger that's been playing Mario for beard growth so I thought that it was just going to be more of the same, screen shots really do not do it justice as the actual design and pacing and difficulty level is just so well crafted and polished to within an inch of it's life. I know the Nintendo Seal of Quality was lolworthy in the SNES days with it's silly sticker but off the top of my head I can't really think of a single game on my 360 or the PS3 that is as tightly put together and balanced so well. The mere fact that somehow all of the levels still work and aren't too easy regardless of if you have any of the power ups is automatically a step up from SM World - you could pretty much guarantee that you could just go back to Donut Plains, grab the cape off the first enemy Start + Select out and then fly through almost any of the levels. You can't do that in NSMBU and on top of that, you can play all of them in the boost mode or coin rush mode with 4 people at once and it all still works. It's so simple that I think a lot of people dismiss how bloody clever it is.

I would bloody piss myself to see an equivalent game made by almost any western dev totally fall into an unbalanced mess or not even be able to scale and zoom out correctly if you had 4 people on screen at once.

TL;DR: Mario is easily the best platform game by a long margin but NEG might just be trolling so who knows.

Mario handles fine, and having more 2D Mario games is fine, its just that (imo) they could use a change of scenery, and music, and not just one new power up suit whilst discontinuing others, and to remember what made to Mario World world map great. The recent games are just not different enough from each other to warrant existence.

Because to me Mario stood for innovation. The best Nintendo could come up with for their flagship franchise, they proved it time and time again. Seeing 3D Mario take the same route was the most saddening news of E3. I still hope we'll see a proper 3D Mario this gen, but I'm not holding my breath anymore.

I do, check sig.

That's a fair point I suppose but it's still not anywhere near (IMHO) to the saturation of CoD or waist high wall third person shooter games.

I would have loved to see a proper Mario 64 style 3D Mario, no doubt about it but I'm bloody glad they aren't going down any sort of Hitman Absolution type 're-imagining' of it all and losing all the fun in the first place. Totally unlikely really but I think that article which I think I read linked from here about Nintendo seem 'boring' to a lot of journos or gamers because we've been playing Mario for effing years now but I love the fact that it (and Nintendo generally) embrace the game side of video games, they're all fun and they all just work.

As a little example, I recently enjoyed Bioshock Infinite quite a lot but the whole time there were bits of 'shame you can't do that' or 'pity you can't go over there' or 'bit weird that that happened like that' etc etc. I don't think I have ever thought of such a thing in a Nintendo game.

The only real gripe I have with NintendoLand for another example is that there isn't DLC for the MP games. I would genuinely buy Mario Chase as a full game with more levels and other little power up type things, in an almost Smash Bros way perhaps but then the vids of Mario 3D land looked like the MP might bring some of that into it and then their is actual Smash Bros coming as well. They just really know how to make a game. Conversely, the actual 'game' bit of Bioshock Infinite is arguably not that good. However, I don't think Nintendo would make something like that and it be better, so if anything....

TL;DR Games are great at the mo.

@Super Craig I've played Super Meat Boy loads and although it does have tight controls and it's floaty nature is how it's programmed but at the same time it's also a slightly different game in it's time attack nature, so really I don't think they are directly comparable. I'm probably also just a lot less practised than with Mario but I find that I die a lot more due to the controls than I do in a mario game. Still a great game though.
