Nintendo Wii U

I'm sure they'll all have lots of little touches that show off the new hardware

"lots of little touches" is not good enough for next gen. The whole purpose of next gen is to see radical steps forward, even overhauls, to a franchise. Like SNES > N64 transition, or even N64 > GC. "lots of little touches" are reserved for same gen sequels.

I haven't seen any radical step forwards from old franchises or new from the PS4 or Xbox One events. Little details are what make games interesting and while the focus on DK's fur effect was just as dumb as focusing on next gen dog in CoD I'm looking forward to seeing what new things Nintendo try with the more powerful hardware especially as stylistically Nintendo games tend to age pretty well.

Yes me neither. With all the excitement died down ultimately the graphical increases in minimal, arguably less than from the PS2 > current gen split. Of course this will get better in a few years.

And Nintendo games age well because they look similar to previous generations, therefore there is no vast updated complexity to compare to.

Look at that. I want Mario like that.

Meanwhile NSMBU looks stunning, that video is pretty much all thats wrong with games these days - brown!

I'd buy that. Graphics are not 'generic Mushroom Kingdom' for a start.

True, never once has there been a castle in a mario game ever.

Well i guess not one that looked that bad, the NES game has better graphics and colours.

Not sure if serious

I'm going to come out and say it: Eurogamer hate the Wii U. I don't say this as an owner of the console but rather as a reader of their site and a listener of their podcasts. I can't remember when they have said anything good about the machine or its games. They were very quick to jump on the, since proven incorrect, information about the CPU and GPU, and I find it quite poor that they have never come back to redress that article in the light of subsequent findings about the machine. As a site, they are obsessed with power and the shinies, as can be seen in their Digital Foundry articles, and in their podcasts, they are generally very disparaging of the machine. The only good things I can remember is the one where they say about playing it on the go with that portable charger and the low power draw of the machine.

In light of this, the 6 comes as no surprise.

Isn't that review written by our very own Rudderless? He's always come across as pretty Nintendo-centric, so, y'know, maybe he just didn't like it?

There's nothing wrong with not liking it. Actually, having played it, I think releasing it at retail is crazy. I don't think the casual Mario player is going to get much enjoyment out of it at all.

Hello! Sorry, folks, I just didn't take to Luigi U, and I thought NSMBU was the best 2D Mario since Yoshi's Island (though not as good as Jungle Beat, obv). I am glad some of you are enjoying it more than I did. I just don't think the level design is as strong or inventive - a lot of it feels very familiar, and in places it just lobs more enemies/hazards in rather than doing something really creative with its challenges. It's not as difficult as some of the DLC stages in NSMB2, but I felt they did more in reinvigorating the game rather than just being shorter and harder. Each to their own, of course, but I'd be surprised if I was alone on this.

Anyway! As per deKay's video above, anyone who loves old-school platformers with extreme difficulty will be in their element with Wii U - looks like we're getting a whole bunch of eShop releases along similar lines.

Did you not read the Zombi U and Lego City Undercover reviews?

Chris Schilling is a very pro Nintendo... he's disappointed with Luigi. Nothing wrong with that.

I wish Nabbit was available in the whole game. Would be perfect for my kid.

you couldn't be more wrong. Also, Digital Foundry were very positive about NFS MW on the WiiU. Basically said it was the best version of the game and used high res PC textures with a solid framerate.

.

Hold down zL and zR when you select a level and you can play as Nabbit instead of Luigi in single player.

rudderless new luigi u is brill quality :(

I'm really glad you like it - perhaps it's just a case of wanting different things from Mario games.

My review is just an honest opinion, and my honest opinion is that I enjoyed NSMBU much more than this. I think that's because it has more variety - this is very one-paced because almost every level is a simple left-to-right run through a whole boatload of enemies. It's not the challenge I have an issue with (I beat the game without too many problems, despite a couple of difficulty spikes, and the annoyance of being kicked back to the world map with every life lost) so much as the fact that it doesn't really do anything new. It's shorter and harder, but I felt that Nintendo had more success with the NSMB2 level packs, which each brought something different to the table.

Each to their own, of course, and I'm sure it'll get plenty of high scores when the other sites get around to reviewing it. I enjoyed it well enough to play it through to completion in two sittings, with another two alongside my son playing as Nabbit grabbing Star Coins and where I tested out the stages using Mario physics. But by Nintendo's very high standards, I felt this was a disappointment, which is reflected in the review.

I really do wish that there was an instant restart when you lose a life in a Mario game... or even just a button that made me restart instantly... so, I'm about to fuck up... smack the reset button and I'm immediately running from the start again. (just like in Trials HD).
