Nintendo Wii U

You might as well ask what the benefits of Steam are when you can pirate all the games for free.

Well, it helps that all the games actually are on Steam and you don't have to wait to be drip fed 20 year old games at a pace of 2 a week while they are available everywhere else for years. Other benefits are that they are linked to your account so you can conveniently download and play them on any Steam compatible system you have without hassle, you don't have to mess with cracks and hacks, everything is updated automatically, easy access to mods and modding tools, supporting publishers and developers...

So yeah, not a very good comparison, sorry. I think we can all agree the VC is an excellent idea, but the whole way Nintendo is handling it, from availability to pricing, is just piss poor.

All of that has nothing to do with what you were saying though. You actually asked what the benefit of the VC was in comparison to pirating the games and playing them on an emulator.

Nintendo the missed opportunity to add something more to the Wii u vc games. They should have added online leaderboards and online play for games. Perhaps its something they can add in and charge for for the Wii u 2 in 2017 but trickle the releases for another few years.

I'm not saying that a nes game should be sold for a few pence but for the minimal work Nintendo are putting into updating the games £4.50 for 20+ year old games is taking the urine. Nintendo are out of touch with digital content pricing especially without a true account system in place.

"During the next several months, Nintendo expects to launch new titles in the Mario Kart (Wii U), Super Mario Bros. (Wii U), Wii Fit (Wii U), Pikmin (Wii U), The Legend of Zelda (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS), Mario & Luigi (Nintendo 3DS) and Pokémon (Nintendo 3DS) franchises. These games, along with titles from Nintendo's third-party publishing partners, will help drive hardware momentum and introduce new audiences to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms."

"Next several months" means between now and at least October, given what we already know. In less than 6 months we'll likely have a new Mario Kart and Mario? Awesome.

And this from someone who defended... GameRoom

I mean seriously...

GameRoom!!!!!

I liked Game Room. Even if only for Frostbite and Adventure.

Can someone confirm the upgrade prices for those who had the titles on Wii? £1?

I *think* they said 99p for NES games, £1.49 for SNES.

EDIT: $1 and $1.50, so yeah, probably 99p and £1.49

Oh yeah I quite liked it too but it cant be denied that it was a bit shite with few games on launch and dripfed after that with mostly old Atari 2600 titles a fair few of which were unplayable rubbish ;)

so ya know.. a bit like WiiU VC :P

the problem with leaderboards and highscores is that save states totally negates them... they should have put it in such that if you use a save state, it resets your score or something.

Which is something the recent Sega 3pack collections on 360 do (Streets of Rage), which I love. They can still have the problem of any original glitches to get inflated scores would remain, though. But it was still great playing a mode that respected high scoring.

Sega does what Ninte-::smack::

No they didn't.

All we know is that the update is coming this week and that the VC will launch on the day afterwards.

According to multiple sources now, the update is coming on Thursday with the VC launching on Friday (though obviously it'll all depend on the timezones as to exactly when on each day it goes live for folks).

Hold on, so Nintendo built this great VC library up, but for the WiiU it only works on the virtual Wii? Owners and Nintendo both have to scrap everything and start over for the WiiU?

How did that even happen, insufficiently future-thinking licensing agreements for the original VC?

No, they don't. You can still use them all on the virtual Wii. Or upgrade them to run on the Wii U "proper".

This is painful to watch. You can only assume that they're trying to fail now. "All that good stuff we did before to make Wii a success, instead of building on it, let's do it worse and see if that works."

Wii U won't live or die by Virtual Console but it does show how they can't even get the simplest of things right at the moment.
