I got my little hdd caddy today but no Y connector even tho it lists one - plugged it in anyway and it just pulses and obv doesnt have the power to spin the drive - most annoying and odd that they don't give enough power out :(

Is there no Nintendo video channel thing on the wii u - thought i would watch the direct vid on it as i have on the wii in the past but nowt there???

So in the Direct, Nintendo announced a few new features coming in the first big system update:

- ability to download and install games in the background

- boot straight into Wii Mode by holding the B button on the Gamepad

- transfer saves and data from one USB external to another

- download of system updates and data while the Wii U is in a low power state (technically off, but it'd be like Wiiconnect 24)

It's coming next week and the Virtual Console launches the day after.

All good things! We like good things! Continue giving us good things, Nintendo!

And the rest of us?

This is the only thing stopping me from selling my Wii U.

I really don't know, man. I'd take a stab at mid-August, going by Nintendo's track record in the last 12 months.

What were those non-30p Virtual Console games revealed in the Direct? Mario World (which I'll get), Excitebike (which I definitely won't), Ice Climber (Probably won't) and... Mario's Picross? I do love picross, but I have three picross games on the 3DS already and it's probably more suited to a portable system.

I hope it's not as painfully slow a schedule as the 3DS' VC has been. Sometimes they release awful, awful games when they've got an absolutely absurd back catalogue to choose from. It's madness. At the very least I hope they're prompt at releasing those games which were already available on the original Wii VC. I want to buy Street Fighter II again.

Also yes! Runner 2 is lovely! I've not played beyond the first world (though my girlfriend tried the first stage of world two and in doing so unlocked 'dancing') but it's really fun. I only played it on the harder difficulty as it was starting pretty slow so I was going back to get Perfect Plus in all stages on all difficulties before moving on.

I'm not sure if I like Dancing? I wish I had some extra audio or rumble based feedback as I did it; it feels strangely unsatisfying as it is. Dunno. I do constantly mash on ZR now because of it, causing death even on easy. Which is ideal.

I want the AKI Wrestling games but that's probably gonna be a no because of licensing hell, right? What about the Virtual Pro Wrestling games; did they have licensed stuff? I don't know anything about wrestling. I just want that exact same game to play. The wiki suggests the characters are "generic renditions" of wrestlers but I guess we're unlikely to get it since it's Japan only anyway. Though we did get Sin & Punishment, right? Right?

Who knows with Nintendo? On the one hand they thought the best way to showcase the Virtual Console on their new HD machine is 50Hz Balloon Fight. On the other hand, we're getting Earthbound for the first time and Bravely Default before the US.

Maybe someone, somewhere in NoE has a light bulb flickering and came to a realisation that Nintendo owners quite like to have games and a wide variety of them. That they know there are games in Japan and they'd quite like them over here.

Clearly the best way to ask for it is to doodle on Miiverse over and over again.

It's a shame that the Wii U Virtual Console service will be NES and Super NES only. I'll miss the fact that the Wii Virtual Console offered games from so many non-Nintendo formats... Mega Drive, Master System, PC Engine, Neo Geo, MSX, C64, arcade units. Wondering if there's licensing issues behind the switch to Nintendo formats only, as the Game Gear offerings on the 3DS VC stopped ages ago, after only four releases.

I remember Iwata touting the VC as a kind of "iTunes for games", then completely failing to capitalise on that.

Imagine rolling out every game as it's possible to do so. Have rotating special offers, ensure that there's always a game from each format for a quid every month or so, and have a price ceiling of a fiver. Old games - especially when you've a catalogue as rich as Nintendo's - are tempting to many, but only if they're all out there on display.

A true "iTunes for games" - assuming other publishers were invited back to the table - could be a sizeable draw. Instead, they decided to jettison that concept for a "record store which might stock that one at some point...if you'd like, we can take your number and get back to you if it comes in?".

The biggest annoyance is that it'll be a bloody age before everything's on the Virtual Console again! By which time we'll be drip-fed releases all over again on the next console!

If it had simply continued from the Wii's library (outside of paying for the upgrades), I'd be looking forward to more rarities. No reason Mischief Makers shouldn't have made it out on Wii's VC for example. Instead we'll have to wait for Mario 64 to come out first. Again.

I agree with this... I want all wii ware available from eshop just like DSiWare is on 3DS. Then, if you launch the game, it just boots into WiiMode. The current solution is clunky and your VC purchases are still there - but it's annoying. I've not bought Mulano or Retro City Rampage, just because its really too much hassle.

They should put everything on there and charge (say) £20 access to a virtual NES & all games, £30 for SNES etc. Forget all this nickle & diming with selling each game separately.

Brilliant idea. You made Plok so surely you have a direct Batphone line to Iwata's orifice, non? Ring him up, tell him your idea. He'll listen to you!
