Nintendo Wii U

Didn't Sega only start selling Mega Drives when Sonic was released and noone cared before that?

THIS COMPARISON WORKS I'M SURE.

The doom and gloom does get tiring, we've used all the good jokes up months ago.

...ok, they're still occasionally funny.

Quick Question: I've moved from the UK to the republic of Ireland and I have an account which I started in the UK with 25 quid on it. I also have a load of downloaded stuff on the WiiU itself.

How do I change my region so I can use my Irish debit card / pay in euro AND keep my current Mii account?

I can't seem to find a way to do it.

I still genuinely believe that the Wii U will be Nintendo's last ever traditional TV-linked games console. It's too little, too late (and too expensive) with anaemic software support and underpowered hardware. :(

I think its next console will still be TV-linked, but it'll be a handheld. It recently combined its R+D departments for handheld and home consoles, so that seems like the logical outcome. Not that Nintendo has always followed the logical path, of course.

Pretty sure you can't.

The worldwide nintendo direct today, Japan one has been confirmed as a Luigi special focussing on 3DS and WiiU (the euro and USA are just 3DS as far as i know).

Latest rumours:

- Majoras mask 3ds (from retailers listing)
- Animal crossing 3ds XL for europe (from retailers listing)

I'd really be up for that... MM struggled a bit and pushed the N64 just a bit too hard. The 3DS makeover would, I imagine, have less repeated models and stuff from OoT, a solid frame rate and - I would guess, a friendlier save system, along with all the other improvements from OoT remake. Could be definitive...

Majora's Mask just had an incredible atmosphere. As the end neared, the air was thick with resignation and despair. That may tempt me to re-buy a 3DS...

More pressingly, the April Wii U update is coming next week.

Also, FIFA 14 is being unveiled today. Guess which formats aren't getting it. ;)

Wasn't the last FIFA on Wii U awful? The last FIFA game I played was 10, but I couldn't get into it. I want someone to make a new football game closer in style to ISS 64 or something. I'm surprised there aren't some more arcade-style football games on XBLA.

I guess we ought to expect release dates for some games today, then? Hopefully The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3. I wanna know when I can get my Mario Golf on 3DS too. Details of Miiverse on Wii and smartphones too, maybe?

I'd use Letterbox a lot more if you didn't have to quit other games to use it. And if it loaded quicker. Miiverse would essentially replace it anyway. It's probably my favourite thing about the Wii U. It's all so lovely and good-natured. When more games start implementing it intelligently and creatively it'll be amazing.

I think Nintendo should mandate that *all* single player games have a mode where you can play it on the gamepad only. I'm a big fan of multiple screens. It works really well for Monster Hunter, ZombiU and it's a nice touch in Lego City...

But I actually think Arkham City does a great job. It provides a very useful dual screen set up - but falls back to be perfectly playable just on the gamepad if that's what I require.

It'd make the message much clearer also.

How would that work for some of the stuff in Game & Wario for example though?

It's best how it is IMO, and option that developers can either choose to use or not based upon their game design.

A man who cares not for MiiVerse cares not for life

Maybe I'll change my mind if I actively used it, but like the 3DS fluff applications I just don't really see the use. I guess it could be nice if you have a game with a nice photomode or something, like posting those Forza 4 decals we did on here but I'm really not interested in a stream of mundane screenshots with 'YAY I BEAT BOWSE' captions and the like.

One you start with Puzzle Swap and Streetpass Quest, there's no stopping. Honestly, it's brilliant from Nintendo, ensuring my 3DS is always with me and therefore always in my thoughts.

I've played around with it, but I fail to see what the attraction is. I usually just switch on my 3DS to play a game straight away, then I save and switch off when done to preserve the precious little charge it can hold as much as possible. I guess it's nice that it's there and that it's free and all, but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there.

I'm always surprised how interested I am by them in MiiVerse personally. I thought the same as you, but there's something nice about sharing the routine victories. It's certainly made some of the levels from Mario much more memorable for me, seeing people all around the world celebrating their little wins :).

New Star Soccer on the Wii U would be fantastical.

Best use for me so far of MiiVerse has been getting help in Toki Tori 2 and Trine 2... post screen shot and let people know I'm stuck.

It's such a friendly place.

It's like the gaming equivalent of Stepford.

So in the Direct, Nintendo announced a few new features coming in the first big system update:

- ability to download and install games in the background

- boot straight into Wii Mode by holding the B button on the Gamepad

- transfer saves and data from one USB external to another

- download of system updates and data while the Wii U is in a low power state (technically off, but it'd be like Wiiconnect 24)

It's coming next week and the Virtual Console launches the day after.
