Nintendo Wii U

I said, " but it's going to take something like Wii Fit or Wii Sports to really drive the sales of the console into decent territory at this stage."

I didn't say Wii Fit or Sports, I said it need something of that ilk, something to grab the public consciousness to really drive sales.

And jesus, all the games you list were on the Cube and didn't drive sales. Those titles do not drive sales of the hardware in any massive way. The only one that might is Mario Kart because of it simplicity and history, but none of the others will.

They need a Brain Training/Wii Fit/Wii Sports breakout along with those core games to really get shit moving.

I agree that the cube had all those and thats why I loved my gamecube to death - those plus super monkey ball. I wonder whether the masses now want more wii fits or variations of them - the current wii fits and wii sports are fine and don't most people think the granny market has shot its bolt. Like I said a completely rethunk and startlingly good zelda would make the wii u a definite purchase for me. As for mass market, rather than wii fit/sports, the wii u probably needs to go the other way. The very best ever ever first person shooter would be good, if they could somehow magic that up :)

You may think that but as of the past few days The WiiU has become the indie developers wet dream. Nintendo announced a bum load of stuff at GDC for indies and it all very very good. Got a game for iOS and want on wiiU? No probs now as the HTML5/javascript support is now amazing. It is now just a click of the mouse to get stuff published on it. It also now cost NOTHING in fees to publish a game on WiiU eshop all you have to do is five minutes paperwork and buy a dev machine (which is the same as a high end PC for price) and congratulations you are now on the eshop!. The tweets from indie developers is full of praise for the new system and tools nintendo have made avalible to them. They are really going after indie developers.

It just awesome now. Also JP no longer has an excuse not to make a new PLOK!

So does this mean we Wii U owners finally get to look down on someone? Hey, all you wankers who pre-ordered OUYA. You suck and your console is deader than ours!

Absolutely loving all the indie stuff announced at GDC they are going full tilt at this portion of the market and look like taking full advantage of it. I'm currently building some stuff in Unity and it seems it is as easy as people say to become a Wii U developer, this will be in my plans for the near future.

But to take a discussion on a smaller scale, my Wii U keeps losing connection to the Gamepad. Its not all the time, but I'd say 80% of the time I try to use the thing. I sit maybe 8ft from the machine, but even getting up and sitting right next to it doesn't really help. Knowing that there's a high chance it wont work means I don't switch it on very often anymore. I want to switch it on but its just not worth it. Anyone any ideas?

Also, in response to someone above saying their PS3 is a Netflix machine...Why? Surely the Wii U is the definitive machine for Netflix, there's no way the PS3 can improve on what the Wii U does.

Because you can watch it on the Gamepad?

I use the PS3 for Netflix pretty much because...

A) it has unblock us setup on it.

B) it has a sensible remote.

C) I can still play game pad games if the wife is watching Netflix.

I've found that with both the Wii and Wii U version of Netflix, that quite regularly after watching something it will kind of lose connection and have to be rebooted. None of the tiles will load up, or descriptions of films/tv shows etc. Only happens on the Wii U.

PS3 takes around eleven - twelve seconds before the XMB shows up, and although you can navigate, game logos will then have a bit more loading before they display again. There's still work to be done, but this is a promising improvement.

You are right PS3 isn't terribly fast here, I could see it being around the ten second mark alright. However, the WiiU should not be competing against the PS3, that is ancient tech by now. Consider the Vita, where you push the home button and you are pulled back into the OS instantly. This is the kind of thing I want to see in a game OS. I am so sick of progress bars, spinning circles, and please waits. I know it's all about the games, but I'd like to think things will move forward and not backwards in terms of OS responsiveness. I hope Nintendo can do even more in this regard.

You've still got to get through Nintendo testing but yeah it is a good sign. I'd still like to see Unity support 3ds mind.

Yeah you need to get through testing, and prove you can get a game out. But the proof doesn't have to be a previous record of releasing games or whatever. If you build a game and think it would be a good fit for Wii U they will look at it and make a decision on that. Its a much more streamlined process that before and can only benefit indie devs.

I just wish Wii U and the other next gen consoles would embrace homebrew developers in the same manner as XBLIG. Allow anyone to release games on the system, XBLIG only really started looking like a great alternative in the twilight years, and when people got going it was announced XNA was no more.

I think building on the back of Unity is a great idea and Nintendo and Sony are both on board. I think Microsoft will also be on board, but I also think (hope) they'll use it as their indie game platform a la XBLIG.

Its a great era to be an indie, that's for sure.

After the last few years' brilliant games on the Indie scene, it is pretty exciting to think of what an Indie developer could bring to the Wii U. I can see large developers using the gamepad as an inventory or map screen for most games, which is decent but uninspired. I genuinely look forward to decently-priced indie games which use the gamepad in innovative ways. And more power to smaller developers can only be a good thing for the industry as a whole, forcing Microsoft and Sony to treat indie developers with equal respect.

Sony seem to be doing the "previous success" thing too though, I'd really rather all these consoles did something a bit more radical, so there was a chance of them getting the next big thing, the next Minecraft, rather than what they're doing, which is basically making it easier for pre-existing Steam stuff to crossover.

I guess that's the nature of PC and consoles, but it would be nice to embrace open-ness more.

I'm happy with the way they're doing it just because it means an immediate level of quality control - none of the 'My first game!' shit that made XBL Indie Games such a hell hole. Not that 'My second game!' is a guaranteed sign of success, but it at least shows a bit of dedication on their part. They can always publish on iOS/Android first then just port it a little later, and it means they can use the iOS/Android userbase as a bit of a testing ground.

It does mean there's a chance they will miss the odd breakout hit from a new developer, but at least they're making it pretty easy for that game to then be ported to their consoles.

Sounds like they're making some big improvements to the Miiverse API:

The social network will be more deeply integrated with games.

Nintendo is planning updates to Miiverse functionality, including the ability to more deeply integrate the social network with Wii U games.

The Miiverse API will be updated in a future version of the Wii U Software Development Kit to include features to improve interactions within games, producer Kiyoshi Mizuki revealed in his GDC talk. In future updates, more Miiverse functions will be available from within games. Players will be able to send and receive comments, follow users from within a game as well as viewing follower lists, and see lists of people who Yeah'd their posts.

Miiverse posts will gain the ability to launch games at a specific point from a link in Miiverse. For instance, posts from within levels in New Super Mario Bros. U are tagged with the in-game locations. In the future, players could launch a level directly from a corresponding Miiverse comment. Additionally, the Miiverse can be coupled with an online datastore, which could perform even more advanced functions.

User communities are already available, but no game makes use of the feature yet. User communities on Miiverse work similarly to those in Mario Kart 7. Users who have a community code can join a limited-access community only available to those who own a game and enter the code. Nintendo hopes that restricting interaction to a known group of people will allow people to be more comfortable sharing online. The feature can be used to organize and hold tournaments. Wii Fit U will be the first title to incorporate the feature. Within the Wii Fit U user communities, players will be able to share training records and activity logs with the hope that others they know will encourage them to stick with and enjoy fitness activities.

Mizuki sees the potential to link stage editors to Miiverse, allowing users to create and direct an entire game from Miiverse. He envisions a game where interactions aren't fixed, but people across the world bring the game to life. However, he is not working on such a game since his duties involve providing developer support for the Nintendo Network.

Nintendo is also listening to developer requests on how they might extend the Miiverse API to include more benefits.

Being able to go straight from a comment to part of a game would be really good. NSMB can tag comments with level names, it'd be pretty cool if you could tap on a button and go straight to the level. After a 2 minute load time, probably.

I really hate that copy and past doesn't default to plain text.
