Nintendo Wii U

:( One thing Nintendo are excellent at is repairs. It's a pretty fast service. Not sure how they get on with Wii U to Wii U transfers.

I've only had it six days, so not too much progress lost if they don't recover the save games, but I've spent money on the store already and would prefer to not have to create all the Miis again! I shall be calling them later.

I'd imagine 2K games thought that porting it to the Wii U would be pointless, but that's where Nintendo should have stepped in and thrown money at them.

You remember when Microsoft slapped down $50m dollars for the exclusive stuff to GTA4? That's what should have happened here. It's a statement of intent. Nintendo have spoken at length about getting third parties on board for the Wii U, but so far, every big 3rd party release from everyone bar Ubisoft, is not coming to the machine. Need for Speed Most Wanted will stand as some kind of weird anomaly in all this, and even then it came out five months later.

It's different though. Nintendo have franchises bigger than GTA. Let's look at CoD. That didn't sell on the WiiU. I'm sort of part of the problem because I didn't buy it. Why didn't I buy? Dunno, just not that interested in it. If I was I probably would be more of an Xboxey kinda guy. Battlefield. I wouldn't buy that either. I don't buy Nintendo machines because I'm in love Nintendo, I buy them because I genuinely prefer their games. Give me Animal Crossing over Dead Space any day of the week. Assassins Creed? Everything about it looks horrid and the opposite of the kind of game I like.

Be well fucked off if GTA5 doesn't come out on the WiiU though. And some more driving games.

GTA5, A great driving game then Nintendo's output and a whole load of indie games will make the WiiU prety much perfect for me.

To be fair, Sony haven't revealed their plans yet, they made comments about "there's a perception that you should be able to play used games", which got reported as it being allowed, but when pressed were evasive.

I can see the split being because Nintendo didn't go along with that.

I'll double check but I'm sure I read a quote specifically saying used games would be playable. Edit: Shuhei Yoshida confirmed it to Eurogamer, not sure if there was backpedaling afterwards though.

Don't get me wrong - I've said for a while that Nintendo should be using some of that warchest they've got to secure good quality day and date releases of the big types of games that htey don't specialise in. I agree with that.

Well, the Wii can play all the games from the best console of all time as well as plenty of others, so yeah - it is!

Speaking of a desire to play used games, when is Lovefilm going to make the Wii U version of NFS:MW available for rental?

And when will it be socially acceptable to write WU instead of Wii U?

When there's a TANG version of the console.

Hang on, isn't that what happened with the Gamecube though and it turned out there were only 22milion people who wanted to get one of them?

The franchises that sold bucket loads on the Wii were Mario Kart, the Wii Sports titles (and Wii Play, but let's not kid ourselves, people bought that for the extra controller) and NSMBWIi. Well, we already have this gens NSMB and that's hardly shifting the system is it? I imagine that when Mario Kart and this gen's Galaxy arrives, we'll get a boost, but it's going to take something like Wii Fit or Wii Sports to really drive the sales of the console into decent territory at this stage.

If there is any truth to that rumour at all, it'll be interesting to see if anything changes should somebody like Moore take over.

It's a really strange one, and I think both companies are playing poker with each other right now - EA are currently holding what looks to be the stronger hand, but the game continues....

Are they, though? EA have just lost their CEO, Dead Space 3 is rumoured to be a disappointment, even if they made loads of money on Sim City the negative press from it has been huge - all over the mainstream media particularly in the US... As far as I'm aware, their exclusivity deals for the sports games means that they have to release an annual version on every system and if Call of Duty keeps coming to Wii U then they're giving Activision a completely free run on Nintendo consoles.

If the Wii U gains any sort of traction come Christmas then EA are going to look utterly daft. Betting against a Nintendo console is strange, regardless of the N64 and Gamecube. If the new machines from MS and Sony struggle then where does that leave them? They're already releasing Battlefield 4 on current gen machines and I think only Konami have said they're using a brand new engine for Pro Evo so there's even less reason to upgrade (according to EA).

If companies are requiring 5 million sales to break even on their big titles then either one of two things will happen when the next gen launches:

- EA are developing with the current gen in mind and will only be providing extras for PC and next gen rather than a truly upgraded experience. Next gen sales are simply a bonus but you won't see much of an improvement by buying it on the PS4/720.

- EA are leading with next gen and PC, will downsize it for PS360. Next gen sales are more important with current gen version an attempt to claw back the cost of developing the newer title.

I guess we'll see what happens when it comes out, since EA's position seems the more precarious and if Konami get their football engine sorted out then they've got a massive handicap to deal with.

I for one am devastated I can't play SimCity 5 on the WiiU

Actually I was gutted before it came out, thought it'd be a great fit for the Wii U. As it happens, I think a console version would still be pretty good - there's no reason that the game can't be ported, since it's hardly the complex beast they claimed it to be and it wouldn't have always online. The social features would actually work and I think a dumbed down version for consoles wouldn't be so unacceptable.

Here's a good read on EA and Nintendo (yes, it's NotEnoughShaders and yes it's Emily Rogers but still):

http://www.notenoughshaders.com/2013/03/25/the-sexual-history-between-nintendo-and-electronic-arts/

It's a long article with a few graphs so I won't paste it here.

tl;dr version is that EA see Nintendo themselves as a threat and a competitor so they only really support their consoles through gritted teeth. As far as EA are concerned, they'd rather Nintendo weren't in the market.

Doesn't look good as I'm sure a GTA V U would have been announced by now. It may appear one or two years down the line though.

Possibly the same point they make Lego City and MH3 available possibly.

Not sure whats going on with WiiU games and Lovefilm currently - they don't really seem to be bothering to stock them - they must have a few as they have had them but they keep adding and removing them from the site. I managed to get RE Revelations onto my reserved list last month but it doesn't even show in the search now

Why will wii u fit or wii u sports drive sales? I'm assuming that the balance board and/or the wii remote will still be the controllers of choice and that, in many respects, those games could be more successful as wii rather than wii u games? How would the wii u controller be utilised as a unique requirement so that those games could become system sellers?

The wii U needs a brand new (and fucking brilliant) zelda, a brand new 1080˚ snowboarding game, a mario galaxy type game (although I don't really like them that much), a stunning metroid game ( the only non-2D one I liked was metroid prime by the way) and, yes, another mario kart which will have to be the best one ever to date.

No chance....

Wii Fit U would be a good upgrade simply because you could do your weighing, tests and plenty of exercise just using the Gamepad. Stuff like Yoga for example would be better with the Gamepad as you could put it in front of you on the floor while you exercise.

Wii Sports U would work just like Wii Sports, Kinect Sports and so on. People enjoy these kinds of games and hopefully Nintendo would flesh out the title so that even if it only used the Wiimote, people would see it as a worthwhile upgrade.

Whether or not you believe Nintendo, they've said that they're taking their time with the next Zelda because they want to change up the formula. Presumably titles like Dark Souls, Darksiders and Okami to different extents have put pressure on them and I know the last three console titles have hurt them in terms of criticism.

We know there's a Mario game coming and it'll be playable at E3. Metroid... I don't know. Retro have been working on something for the last two years without there being a hint of an announcement but it could be something else, to be fair. Mario Kart is also coming to E3.

Sooo yeah. Oh and there's Wii Party U which is coming soon. I imagine it'll be focused on during E3.

I said, " but it's going to take something like Wii Fit or Wii Sports to really drive the sales of the console into decent territory at this stage."

I didn't say Wii Fit or Sports, I said it need something of that ilk, something to grab the public consciousness to really drive sales.

And jesus, all the games you list were on the Cube and didn't drive sales. Those titles do not drive sales of the hardware in any massive way. The only one that might is Mario Kart because of it simplicity and history, but none of the others will.

They need a Brain Training/Wii Fit/Wii Sports breakout along with those core games to really get shit moving.

So Nintendo have a video showing how the April update is going to reduce the time it takes to exit a game and go back to the menu...

Jesus Fucking God- even the new, shorter version takes fucking ages to get back to the menu. It must be, what about 7 seconds... Compared to about 20 with the current OS.

I can't believe it's that bad... Or that they think that the new update is acceptable.

What the fuck went wrong, compared to the Wii??? It must be an absolute nightmare at the moment....

The launch, the OS, the name, the games, the console design.... It really looks like they haven't given a shit about it.

Bah. I'll still get one... But they really dropped the ball.

You may think that but as of the past few days The WiiU has become the indie developers wet dream. Nintendo announced a bum load of stuff at GDC for indies and it all very very good. Got a game for iOS and want on wiiU? No probs now as the HTML5/javascript support is now amazing. It is now just a click of the mouse to get stuff published on it. It also now cost NOTHING in fees to publish a game on WiiU eshop all you have to do is five minutes paperwork and buy a dev machine (which is the same as a high end PC for price) and congratulations you are now on the eshop!. The tweets from indie developers is full of praise for the new system and tools nintendo have made avalible to them. They are really going after indie developers.

It just awesome now. Also JP no longer has an excuse not to make a new PLOK!

PS3 takes around eleven - twelve seconds before the XMB shows up, and although you can navigate, game logos will then have a bit more loading before they display again. There's still work to be done, but this is a promising improvement.

Part of it is perception - the "Wii Menu" text seems to cultivate the impression that it's taking a lot longer than the PS3's dead black screen.

In other news, Lego City is super and full to the brim of character, I'm not sure what the Edge reviewer was smoking, but the lack of film / superhero license gives it more of an identity, if anything...there's a LOT more actual Lego, for starters.

It's been said, but the load times will come as a shock to anyone who hasn't played a TT Lego game before; few, if any, of them are good in that department, and the open world makes the pauses more frequent.
