Nintendo Wii U

I don't really see what's wrong about a video showing improvements? The slow UI is a source of complaint, by releasing this video they show they take the complaint seriously and actually do something to fix it. Can only be a good thing surely?

Nah, the machine should work flawlessly out of the box. When I get a PS4 I'll be able to download a game and start playing it instantly, before it's even downloaded and I'll be able to upload a load of videos and stuff while streaming games. All this, I assume, will be completely instant and I'm going to kick up a hell of a stink if it's not.

And I hate games designed around gamepad controls being shoehorned onto touchscreens.

GoatUp2 is my toilet game of choice just now

cognitive disonance in action ;)

I have said many times that a virtual dpad or similar three "button" system for platformers on iOS is perfectly usable and works fine. You have disagreed and seemingly you disagree with yourself too.

I actually think GoatUp2 is very nicely designed around the touch screen. So there.

To be fair after I had a pop at him Napoleon is giving it a real effort not to come across as a mental case with a vendetta against a company. I'm sure the others will come around.

For what it's worth the slow OS has never bothered me. I mean, it takes 28 seconds to quit a game and go back to the menu. I don't really do that. I don't play around in the menu because there's nothing to do there. Worth noting the browser works pretty much instantly no matter what you're doing. If I do ever quit a game it's probably to load Netflix. The cool thing about the WiiU is you can do this while watching Miranda. Yeah, pick what you want to watch on Netflix while Miranda's falling into graves. I'd take that over a faster OS and no second screen. So it's swings and slides really.

Which is one of the bigger embarrassments for Nintendo as the Battlefield logo was used in that initial E3 unveiling for the console.

That's what I mean. This stinks of that rumoured falling out between EA and Nintendo that did the rounds a few months back.

yeah, 8 whole seconds to leave a game and load the menu with the miiverse plaza thing. I haven't got that kind of time to waste.

It's peoples expectation now, what with tablets and the general craving for instant access. Blame Apple or progress, whatever.

If there is any truth to that rumour at all, it'll be interesting to see if anything changes should somebody like Moore take over.

It's a really strange one, and I think both companies are playing poker with each other right now - EA are currently holding what looks to be the stronger hand, but the game continues....

Oh, I agree. I thought... it's in this thread, when people first got their WiiUs and were talking about this slow OS I went apeshit because that's the sort of stuff that really fucks me off. Now, I don't know if it's lowered expectations or just the way I use to WiiU but for me it's not been a problem. From turning the machine on and playing a game seems pretty nippy. While playing a game I might want to use the browser, again, this pretty instant. I don't then go and fanny about in the menu. It's not like a iPad where you do a load of things on it. With the WiiU you can play games, watch streaming TV or use MiiVerse. I don't use miiverse but I don't flit between the other things.

It took, what 3, 4 years for the Gamecube to start to lose EA ports? Wii U worse than the Gamecube for third party stuff.

What are you trying to achieve here? Every single one of your posts over the last few pages has been this kind of ridiculous reductionist nonsense. Is the Wii U your new target for ire now that you don't seem so fussed about the rising cost of games?

See, a normal reply to this news would be something like-

I don't own a WiiU or have an interest in getting one but I think it's rather disappointing EA are flexing their muscles in such a way. Of course it would benefit EA if Nintendo went bankrupt but for us gamers if EA get their way it will be ultimately be worse for gaming.

Something like that rather than what you did.

EA don't want to support the WiiU because Nintendo don't align with their 'vision' for the industry. No restriction on used games... and they didn't use Origin.

I do wish a proper journo would look into the EA/Nintendo thing in more detail - but it's obvious EA have just flung their toys out of the pram.

Electronic Arts is on board to develop games for the newly announced Wii U console.

John Riccitiello took to the stage during Nintendo's E3 press conference. Having made several appearances at Microsoft and Sony conferences, this was the first time he has spoken at a Nintendo E3 event.

"This a breakthrough in our relationship based on a breakthrough in games development," he said. "We look forward to seeing great EA content on this innovative new platform. Nintendo's next console is truly transformational, a better platform than we've ever been offered by them before."

While no details or game announcements were given, Riccitiello openly pondered the possibilities for titles such as Madden and Battlefield on the new console, championing its HD graphics, online capabilities, unique structure.

He promised that Wii U would mark the beginning of an "unprecedented" partnership between EA and Nintendo.

Something definitely went wrong somewhere.

Of course I'd like it... But it wouldn't have made much business sense would it? Would the money spent to develop BI on wiiu be worthwhile?

You could argue that Nintendo could have ponied up... But what return would they have got?

I'll pick it up for my PS3 at some point

You do understand the point of unreal engine is that cross platform development is heavily simplified? It would have made absolute business sense because the effort vs recoup ratio should have been excellent if the fucking thing had sold.

The decision not to do BI on the WiiU was made before the WiiU came out. The decision would have been based on cost of development, ramping up another team, testing versus the expected return on that console. I would have suspected that they would have thought the return would have been low and hence, not worth the effort.

I for one am devastated I can't play SimCity 5 on the WiiU

Well, that's equally as silly because it's not playable on the PS3/360 either.

However, the Dead Space franchise would have been nice, the full Mass Effect franchise too. Battlefield 3 and 4 wouldn't have gone amiss and maybe some form of Sims game too. And let's not forget the behemoths that are Fifa/Madden/Tiger Woods et al. If they fuck off from the Wii U then Nintendo may find themselves in real trouble.

Is that why Assassin's Creed 3 came out for it, seeing as that had been in development for 3 years?

Ubi did the numbers, and thought it was worth doing. IMO - I don't even think the BI guys even bothered with the WiiU, mainly as it was a successor to the Wii.

I'd imagine 2K games thought that porting it to the Wii U would be pointless, but that's where Nintendo should have stepped in and thrown money at them.

You remember when Microsoft slapped down $50m dollars for the exclusive stuff to GTA4? That's what should have happened here. It's a statement of intent. Nintendo have spoken at length about getting third parties on board for the Wii U, but so far, every big 3rd party release from everyone bar Ubisoft, is not coming to the machine. Need for Speed Most Wanted will stand as some kind of weird anomaly in all this, and even then it came out five months later.

But Sony and Microsoft don't do either of those things... Well, rumours are that the next Xbox will but Sony have come out and said that the PS4 will play used games. Why do they accept that from Sony and (possibly) Microsoft but apparently throw their toys out of the pram for Nintendo?

As you say, I'd like to know if EA and Nintendo have had a disagreement but I don't think it's as simple as "Nintendo said no to EA's evil ways".

To be fair, Sony haven't revealed their plans yet, they made comments about "there's a perception that you should be able to play used games", which got reported as it being allowed, but when pressed were evasive.

I can see the split being because Nintendo didn't go along with that.
