Nintendo Wii U

FWIW, the demo was enough to put me off from ever buying the full game. I admit that I don't like FPSes anyway, but the demo indicated that the game really was too annoying to put up with, from what little I played of it. The cumbersome control system just ruined it for me, and the worse bit was having to take my eyes off the TV to look at the fucking controller all the time - to scan the room like a clumsier version of Metroid Prime, to unlock doors, to remove items from cupboards, to rearrange player inventory etc - all utterly redundant and utterly gimmicky. There was nothing there that couldn't have been done in a more streamlined and less irritating fashion on a 'traditional' single (TV) screen and controller set up on the PS3 or Xbox 360. It was just like all those early DS games that shoe-horned in usage of the touch screen that didn't need to be there. It's just intrusive and poor games design.

In a statement that will shock oh, nobody, I couldn't disagree with you more.

I think ZombiU shows off the potential of the Wii U really well. It's exactly the kind of thing I think the system could do with more of. What you call 'utterly redundant' and 'utterly gimmicky' are what I call core pieces of what makes it different and fresh and clever. Saying 'I admit that I don't like FPSes anyway' is telling, because it's really not a classic FPS, and playing it like one will just result in death and frustration aplenty.

Horses for courses and all that.

It sounds like, despite not liking traditional FPS's you wanted it to be more like a traditional FPS.

Might be an idea for Nintendo to try marketing it like that then. Otherwise what's to differentiate it, in the eyes of the everyday consumer, from Dead Island/Left 4 Dead/House Of The Dead: Overkill/Resident Evil etc?

I don't give a blood-stained fuck about FPSes. I don't play games of that genre, I haven't since Goldeneye on the N64, don't lecture me about FPSes, because I honestly don't care! The Gamepad bollocks in ZombiU is the very definition of gimmickery. It breaks the immersion of the gameplay - if I'm tied up in a game, I don't want to have to take my hands off the screen every 20 seconds to stare at a shite piece of plastic in my hands that looks like a Chinese knock-off tablet computer. I want to keep my eyes on the main games screen and keep focused on that!

...you do realise it's precisely to add immersion by forcing you to 'look into your backpack' while zombies are gunning for you, right?

Then your missing out on one of the most terrfying things to happen in the survival horror genre for a long time. It adds immesnly to the atmosphere.

"Fuck! fuck! come on give me the weapon......" zombie moans. Look up at screen "Shit ! shit! come on!". Now you either don't taken those vital items and run for your life or you take them and hope to god the zombie doesn't get to you in time.

Niche title? I thought Monster Hunter singlehandedly saved the PSP, or is it just big in Japan?

It saved the PSP in Japan :P Honestly, Monster Hunter isn't the big game that's going to wow the masses because it didn't happen with Tri and it didn't happen with Portable (/Freedom/Unite).

If I were Nintendo of America/Europe, I'd go to Bethesda and make sure Skyrim GOTY edition was coming to Wii U. But I'm not and it won't.

It's not a big deal in the west. Nor will it be when the latest console version is exclusive to a small userbase at a RRP of 50 pounds. I really enjoyed MH Tri on the Wii and enjoyed some of it on the PSP (let down by awkward single stick controls- though better on the vita via the second stick acting as the camera) but there is no way I'm paying 300 pounds to play the latest version.

Zombi U is the kind of game I'd pick up cheap in the event I get a Wii U but not the kind of game I would buy a console for if that makes any sense. As it is, I have zero interest in the system at the moment so it may take a while.

The remora fish of the Wiiu thread ;)

...you do realise it's precisely to add immersion by forcing you to 'look into your backpack' while zombies are gunning for you, right?

Does it actually aid immersion, though?

This is the waggle debate all over again, where you had people like Davros claiming that spining a piece of plastic in the air was somehow inherently more immersive than moving an analogue stick a touch with your finger.

Well it adds tension without putting an artificial barrier between you and the game like having a menu screen obscure the game and take priority over the controls, whereas there's nothing to stop you rifling through your bag but responding to a sudden zombie attack.

You can argue about whether or not it works but it's hardly meant to be the opposite.

Basically, yes. The Gamepad is the Wii U's waggle.

The gamepad and in Zombi U and MH are brilliant. Surprised me how handy item management is on another screen and I thought it was going to be rubbish. It's not a game changer just a game helper. Although in Zombi U it ramps up the tension as it takes you eye off the surrounding which makes it more realistic and tense. It's no waggle.

zombi u is fantastic. Really immersive, and as mentioned the whole having to look from the screen adds to the immersion. Nothing more fun than rifling through the gamepad all frantic looking for something only to realise that zombie that was miles away is right on you and you have to act fast.

I think Red is missing the point...but then I dont see why, if he is so against it, he feels the need to continually berate the machine. Just go enjoy something else.

I've been playing ZombiU for just a couple of days now and I totally agree - it's great. Tricky, immersive, uncompromising, unique - all those things that have often been identified on rllmuk in less high profile games like Dark Souls that I've then gone on to enjoy. I'd held off buying a WiiU til that HMV price drop even though I've bought every other Nintendo console at launch, partly because I was unconvinced by the gamepad. But the way Ubisoft have used it is fantastic. We just have to hope that someone else can put it to equally good use in the near future. As for the machine itself, the update was a pain and it's far too slow to load and switch between apps... but Miiverse is just fantastic.

i like the gamepad alot - but don't think Zombu U is that great at all. i am a voice of descent though, as other than the Nintendo bashers it seems to be loved, so its my loss I guess.

I got very bored of the dank, dreary gameplay and feeling of oppression pretty quickly.
