Nintendo Wii U

Monster Hunter isn't a game that would review or demo well. If you've never played anything like it before it can be pretty incomprehensible. The first one I played was the PSP version Freedom Unite or whatever. The tutorial took me ages o_O and I stopped playing because the famous claw controls just didn't work for me. I was going to get it on the Wii but then I heard this was coming out so held off.

When you watch someone who knows what they're doing play the game, it's fucking amazing. The question is can you be arsed. If not, then you won't even think it's a 78% game. If it's your type of game, though, it'll be fantastic and you'll wonder why it scored so low.

So no posting in the Wii U thread, unless: you own a Wii U. You have something positive to say. But IF you have to say nasty stuff about the Gods - include this preamble: "I love Nintendo and all they stand for. I always have and always will. I have to say though, that *insert game or console here* has some faults. Which I fully expect Nintendo to fix in the next iteration. The faults (IMO) of *insert game or console here* are: *write text here*"

I got around to setting mine up again yesterday after moving and now I can't get online it connects to the router but won't then connect to the internet. A subsequent google shows this is not an uncommon problem - they really don't do themselves any favours do they?

My first day with my WiiU was probably the most frustrating 'first day with a console' experience ever. I was not happy.

Must do better.

Yes, that's exactly what was said. Well done for being able to see the shades of grey in the debate and not just carrying on with the same sterotypical nonsense.

I finally got around to playing Nintendo Land with the in-laws yesterday and they loved it. Especially Mario Chase. My controller did seem to run out power pretty quickly and the red light came on after about 90 minutes of gaming. I cannot remember that being the case when I caned through ZombiU at Christmas.

I also had a couple of instances where the pad displayed the disrupted communication warning even though I was only a couple of metres away from the console. Seemed a bit strange.

Sad for the Lego score, seems like it was the big hope around here :(

Why does it bother you? It'd only bother me if I was looking to purchase the game in question and I was using Edge magazine as the decider. Plenty of games shift plenty of copies with low scores and plenty of very high scoring games make zero dent in the fortunes of a hardware system.

Bayo 2 will be more of an interesting Edge scoring comparison considering there is already a bar that has been set. Though I'm not expecting it to break the Kamiya curse (currently 4 for 4). His next game however, very high hopes for that one, a load more like that and I'd be interested in this system.

I care as I wanted it to be a genuine 90%+ game that was universally liked and could be held up as a shining example of exclusive Wii U content. I would then be more eager to buy it when I eventually get my Wii U, but like many I'm holding out for a possible price cut, a big system update which is promised, and some more big games announced (E3).

I was a big Edge fan and still subscribe but I don't trust there reviews now, look at the Aliens score vs. the general consensus on the internet. I also don't trust official magazine scores either. I will be looking forward to hearing some first hand reports on here :)

I've just had a thought, considering the load times seem to apparently be an issue for Lego City, can you even install to console as you can on the other consoles with the WiiU? I've not noticed it but I've not looked.

There's no 360-style install available. Nintendo could probably copy it, but I don't see it happening.

Plus it probably wouldn't make much difference.

The disc drive and loading on the Wii U, like most Nintendo consoles is pretty quick so if its taking that long it's likely down to code or the way it's loading into memory etc.

Rumours (started by random bloke writing a blog on ONM) - Smash Bros could use Skylands style NFC...

not sure how I feel about that. Having characters locked away unless I bought them is rubbish and sounds like a very 'un-Nintendo' thing to do.

On the other hand... TAKE ALL MY MONEY.

How about linking all games with Mario together using your wee mans... so, you have your wee NFC Mario that gets so many coins in the platforming game and earns some kind of reward and you take your wee mans to your friends house to play him at Mario Golf... and after winning a few games of that, you then shove him into Smash Bros and have extra powers or something.

I haven't thought this through.

I did like the idea back in Melee where you could get certain special trophies only from real world events (the US got a couple, I believe). Gives it a element of pokemon and makes the whole trophy collecting feel more worthwhile again. I didn't care as much in Brawl if I had most or not.

would also allow for different games to introduce new characters... actually... the more I think about it...

for example, Mario Golf comes out... and there are say, 5 unique characters to buy.

Then Smash Bros comes out and another 5... but you can take any of those into Mario Golf.

etc etc...

It would bankrupt me.

I wonder if people would accept it though. Skylanders has the whole business model set up from the outset so you know what you're buying into, but if Nintendo would use it for their Mario-themed games, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people got up in arms about it and qualify it as an 'on disc DLC' ripoff scheme. The question then is if the lost sales out of protest would weigh up to the extra revenue generated by selling those figures.
