Nintendo Wii U

No Alex. The only problem with the WiiU is its high price and almost total lack of games and the fact people are all very poor nowadays. The very fact Nintendo aren't promoting the machine suggests they know that at the moment the WiiU isn't really a compelling purchase. But they will release games, the price will come down and everything is going to be absolutely fine, trust me on this.

The telling thing is even without games most WiiU owners are pretty happy with their purchase, it really is a great little machine. You should get one.

Exactly. There's nothing about the WiiU itself that has anything to do with this issue. If the PS4 had launched first it'd be going through the exact same process.

Yeah, and it'll get games eventually, like Ramone says. I doubt that the PS4 and Nextbox are going to launch with this era's answer to Tetris either, and they're going to cost a fortune too.

It's just how it goes when a new generation ticks over. You wait a year and everything's rosy.

I don't understand the 'first' bit. The PS4 will go through the same process. As will the next xbox, unless it's £150.

I always figured that whatever system launched first got to look bad because all of its games were only selling small numbers. (Which is of course just because there are few machines out there.) By the time the other systems launch expectations are more reasonable.

I'm willing to accept that I'm mistaken though.

The only thing that might save 720/PS4 will be games that might straddle the divide (as it were) perhaps Watch_Dogs, GTAV and Star Wars 1313 might have a 360 and a 720 version.

Or maybe not those but you know what I mean. Unfortunately, the Wii has also had absolutely bugger all out for it since Xeno and that other RPG I can't remember the name of. In fact, speaking of RPGs, no Ni No Kuni on the Wii U was a bit of a cock up as well imo.

The schedule is looking rosier now starting the end of this month. Nintendo really do need to get past this 'aint it expensive to develop games these days' thing out of their system and get ready for next Christmas. That's gonna be the make or break thing. To me the launch was a soft one. They have even stopped advertising it now, presumably to be ready for later in the year when stuff starts coming out with a bit more regularity. At least that would be the hope.

I really do think that Pokemon XY could do wonders for them here. If they can build the launch of that up to a crescendo and advertise the Wii U off the back of it on the run up to Christmas they could be on to a winner, even with the PS4 \ 720 on the horizon. Especially if one or neither of those don't make it out for Christmas. So much rides on Japan too of course.

Fair point but xeno didn't appear on psp / vita but somehow no no kuni came out on DS although not 3DS for some reason.

Odd deal imo.

Ninokuni came out on the DS in 2010, basically Level 5 brought the game to the two machines with the biggest install base in Japan for RPGs.

Aren't those Pokemon games 3DS games?

Yeah, not sure how that ties into the Wii U.

Pokemon games tie into the Wii U by association.

Pokemon games will sell shed loads of 3ds's next Xmas and generate loads of hype and sales for Nintendo. If they tie Wii U advertising in with it, maybe getting some sort of tie in with an eshop title then it would all be very positive.

They should be all over iOS with stuff like that, too - I know there're Pokemon apps, but I'm talking stuff that really ties into fully fledged Wii U / 3DS games. It's a great advertising tool.

I'm totally amazed they haven't made a really blatant skylanders rip of Pokemon for WiiU - surely AR cards, seeing your pokemans running about your living room or what have you. Using the 3DS for the Pokedex maybe... just seems obvious. E3 I reckon.

I asked this ages before but why aren't there Pokemon games on consoles bar spinoffs like snap, stadium ? Would be great on the wiiu

I think I read in an interview that Nintendo sees Pokemon primarily as a franchise for portable handhelds because of the emphasis on trading Pokemans with friends, which has been pretty hard to do on a console unless you go online. I presume this is the move they'll make with the console game now.

Here is the quote from Game Freak again to sew up the usual long running wrong headed "if they'd only put Pokémon on console, it'd sell Millions" line that frankly nearly everyone and their dog seems to intensely believe in for no good reason.

IGN: Why have you never made a Pokemon game for Nintendo's home consoles? Would you consider doing a Game Freak main-series Pokemon game on the Wii?

Junichi Masuda: I don't think so. I think the Pokemon core series is always going to be with handheld hardware, in the future as well. I consider handheld hardware you can carry around with you as almost being equal to being with Pokemon, always. I think handheld really matches the idea of Pokemon that we have. Also, you can communicate and transfer data all the time, whenever you want with a handheld. That's also a match with the Pokemon concept.

Pokémon X and Y looks like it could be a good fit for console as well. Why not make a Wii U version?

I can’t speak to the specifics, but traditionally Game Freak has always loved the game to be on a portable device because of the communication, trading, and the experience of taking this adventure with you. That’s why they’ve always prioritized a portable version of the game first. They’ve always liked what you can do in the real world with that.

Why haven’t we seen a console Pokémon?

It comes down to what the creators want to do. Every time I’ve heard them talk about it, it’s been about the portable experience, taking the adventure with you, being able to share it with friends, communicate, trade, battle – really encouraging that interaction
