CRT sales are still in the Millions every year, it ain't even dead still.

CRT sales are irrelevant to 50Hz vs 60Hz though. When was the last time a CRT was sold in Europe that didn't support 60Hz? Even the low-budget 14-inch TV I got for Christmas in 1990 supported 60Hz - I cannot imagine there are new CRTs being sold that are 50Hz-only, and I can't imagine there's all that many Wii Us hooked up to ancient 50Hz-only TVs.

Maybe not for early adopters, they don't even include composhite cables with it, do they? but as several of the 50Hz only Wii games released were from Nintendo themselves, place your bets. CRTs are very long lived, somebody will be plugging one of these new generation of consoles into a CRT I would bet, as a significant number of people are still using current HD consoles on SD CRTs still.

Absolutely cannot wait to be playing F Zero whilst defecating in the bathroom; the gamepad has been neglected of late, and those fond memories of that Mode-7 track kicking in are just wonderful.

When does the e-shop update? Would be great to watch the Playstation event, then play F-Zero in the early hours (apologies if this has been answered earlier in the thread).

Paging JP, paging JP...

Even more encouraging: according to Nintendo’s latest shift in policy, it’s easier than ever to become an approved developer for the Wii U and 3DS eShop. What are the requirements?

1) You must have released at least one game in the past. Unproven teenagers without even a single game in their resume need not apply. But if you’re not using Wii U as your guinea pig to learn programming, you’re already good to go.

2) You must have registered yourself with the government as a business for tax purposes.

3) You’ll need to pay for a dev kit to work on. This doesn’t cost a tremendous amount but it does help to filter out the little kids who’ve made a Flash game online and now want to randomly publish their casual games on Wii U or 3DS.

Once you’ve proven to Nintendo that you believe in your product enough to pay a bit of money to buy a dev kit, you’ve had a bit of experience in the past, and you’ve registered yourself as a business (an absolutely simple bit of bureaucracy that anyone can do if they chose to) then you’re ready to submit yourself as a developer to Nintendo and get approval. What many might not realize is that until last month there used to be a fourth restriction which Nintendo is now dropping. In the past you had to have a registered place of work (an office) that is exclusively used for your business. This was a big hurdle for many developers. Thinking back to when I watched Indie Game: The Movie, I don’t think Edmund McMillen of Team Meat was working in a rented office space. It looked more like it was in his own bedroom.

I know personally of some famous indie developers that had this hurdle with Nintendo’s restriction, but I won’t name them without their permission. Whatever the case, it’s nice to know Nintendo has made it even easier to become an approved developer.

That was posted ages ago. I don't think it was strictly adhered to either.

It was talked about ages ago, but it seems that Nintendo only finally dropped it as a requirement in the last few weeks. As for it being adherred to, it certainly was in many cases...

Indeed. But none of them will offer the same level of functionality that the Wii u screen does simply because developers can't count on the person having a second screen device so it will be relegated to additional extras rather than actually having games built around it.

That and latency would be an issue for other systems too, right? The PS4 announcement actually made me more interested in the Wii U than PS4, wildly. I'm sure Sony will bust out a bunch of big hitters at e3. So will Nintendo though I guess. And those other guys.

Why are choices so difficult?

It'll barely get used at all I reckon simply because developers will have to develop uses for it and attempt to apply them to all manner of devices. eg - they can't count on there being traditional controls because the user might be using a tablet and not a Vita.

Watch Dogs on WiiU could be bloody amazing, having all your hacking and info about your surroundings and the people on the gamepad instead of all over the HUD could really help imho.

Although it might (probably will) end up looking a bit ropier.

Should look better than the 360/PS3 versions.

Genuine question, how many Wii U games require the second screen to such an extent that you can't play the game simply on the second screen when the TV is off or in use. A large amount of games seem to allow you to play just using the controller screen which would indicate that the Wii U second screen is largely being used for additional extras rather than having games built around it.

ZombiU is the only one I know of at the moment that permanently needs the 2nd screen.

The thing is, if MS make smartglass better in regards to using it in game as another input or what have you and PS4 can use any tablet/ smartphone / vita then theoretically many more games can be made that could have a secondary function on another screen, or stream to it.

Looks like Nintendo (for all the grief they get) were the ones that innovated again and everyone copied them. If only they copied some other companies when it came to online stuff (and POWAH).
