Nintendo Wii U

Do you have an Asda Living where you live? Here in Lincoln, the main site has no Wii U stuff but the Living store has got a fair bit of stuff. In the Grimsby store, where there is no Living branch, they have plenty of Wii U stuff.

No, it was a big standard (although fairly large) Asda. They had 360, ps3, Wii, 3ds and even Vita... Not a sausage on the Wii U.

Maybe stock is limited and Asda are just putting them in certain stores, but at least when the Wii launched there might have been no consoles, but you knew it was out. It was just that it was sold out. For months.

Maybe Nintendo expected something similar and didn't want to hype too much incase of the old "disappointed parents" crap you'd get in the press at Xmas. Maybe the lack of sales has really caught them by surprise- of course, no official numbers have been issued by Nintendo. Just rumours...

Just a random thought...

If Nintendo "fail" this generation, I'd like to see them create a super powerful 3DS replacement that *also* replaces their home console line. So they just have a handheld, perhaps one that also connects to a TV.

Makes sense since that's what they sell best, and they have just merged both R&D departments...

It's so stupid. There are no words

The German law in question doesn't even specifically apply to the internet anyway, it is designed for broadcast TV primarily, Nintendo are just taking the easy option, as this person points out:

Nintendo is not being 100% honest with their customers here and here’s why.

“Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night.”

This sentence is not entirely true. Nintendo is referring to a law that was created for television stations. The law basically states that certain kinds of content must not be played/shown during the day. This is usually meant for movies rated 16+ and movies rated 18+. Depending on the rating, tv stations can only show them at night.

Nintendo defines “at night” with “the time between 10pm to 4am”. This is a time frame that can not be found in any documents. The only official time frames available are “10pm to 6am” and “11pm to 6am”. It is, indeed, recommended that tv stations and content providers consider the fact that children and teenagers may be watching TV up until 11pm and that they might be awake before 6am. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the time frame mentioned by Nintendo does not exist.

I am not sure why Nintendo mentions the USK in all of this because they don’t make laws. They rate the video games.

Another problem I have with Nintendo’s statement is that they make it look like there’s one and only one option available. This is not true. The law states that content providers must make sure that 16+ and 18+ rated content must not be made available to minors but it gives the content provider two options. We’ve mentioned the first option, which is allowing access only during night time.

The other one is to control access “through technical or other means”. There are various ways to prove your age without actually being at a certain place in Germany. I’ve talked about them a bit in other Threads but I’ll repeat some of them here. In Germany, we have something called “Post Ident”. You print out a form that basically says “I’m 18, and things sent to me will only be in the hands of adults”, take that to your local post office, show them your government issued ID card and they’ll confirm that you’re the person that signed the thing and that you’re 18. This thing then gets send to the person who wants to know if you’re really 18 and is considered to be proof.

Another thing is age verification through Schufa. Schufa usually handles credit (ratings) in Germany but they can also confirm your age. This is being done by tobacco companies, for example, and relatively uncomplicated. You just give them your name, address and a signature and the Schufa will tell them if you’re 18 or not.

According to websites from the manufacturers, PayTV requires you to enter a code every single time you want to watch a movie that’s not meant for minors and this also seems to be complying with the law.

Now some people think that the other way (technical or other means to ensure no minor gets to see the content) is not really a solution for Nintendo since they’re not 100% secure. I’d argue that the law states that it should be made “very hard or impossible” for minors to access the content and that there’s some room for failure. There’s this agency called KJM and they give some recommendations and ideas on their website - neither are binding, of course.

It really isn’t our problem if it takes a lot of effort to implement a good system, and Nintendo didn’t say “it’s the easiest way for us”, they said it’s the only way, which - to me - is something somewhere between horribly misleading and a straight up lie.

I think that's what's going to happen regardless. Wii U will fade out in a couple of years and we'll have a single all-purpose Nintendo device that's portable but can be played on the big screen.

Well, yeah, I doubt that the Wii U will last as far as 2016. I think we'll get a new format that is initially introduced as a 'third pillar', that is handheld and console on one unit. My guess - maybe it'll like a Wii U but where the controller-with-screen unit will be properly portable, and not need to be tethered to the console to work. Like a sort-of Apple TV/iPad combo, with synergy involved if both parts are connected, but both units have functionality even when separate. God knows how/if there'd be any compatibility with existing Nintendo hardware though.

I'd bet a £1000 that the WiiU will still be around in 2016.

It hasn't launched brilliantly (but apparently quite well in comparison to previous launches, no? I'm sure someone posted up as much before) but come on, it being binned three years and a few months after it came out?

I'm sorry, that's bloody crazy talk. If people would have said that about the Wii, it being in SD and waggle-a-thon etc initially I might have believed that but the difference in graphics / power etc, is no way going to make Nintendo ditch a console after three years. Five maybe and I doubt it's got PS2 style ten year legs but three?

The Virtual Boy probably lasted longer than that.

The massive ASDA in Wolverhampton has no sign of the Wii U at all :-/ Same goes for Morrisons. I wonder if Nintendo are just cutting their losses for now and will just make a push to actually advertise and sell it next xmas when there's a few games out...

In my local Sainsburys it has shelf space equal to the PS3 and Xbox.

The trouble is, that the premium machine is priced around £100 more than those other machines, and to look at the box, it looks like it contains a regular old Wii - especially as they use a similar colour scheme.

And then there are the games, all priced up at £45. Then you look closer and see the multi format games being £45 and those same games (having been out longer on the two other consoles) at around half that price.

For any parents/casuals passing by the displays, I can imagine it doesn't appeal at all, and no surprise really.

Zavvi selling for £224.99 which includes free next day delivery. http://www.zavvi.com/wii-u-hardware/wii-u-console-32gb-nintendo-land-premium-pack-black/10617661.html

But, titles I want won't be out until the end of the year and by the end Sony may tempt me with PS4 anyway. All depends on how good a 3D Mario will be and how good Wind Waker HD is in motion.

What's their GAF username?

Well since you asked so politely, Massive Invisible Dog, it is:

snap0212

NeoGAF's forum software does it automatically as it happens, in fact so does this place I notice :)

I hope that answers your query, if not, feel free to ask for a direct url if this information is insufficient to your needs.

This Germany thing is weird. Its the only country I've been too with womens boobies on display in kids tv!

The Germans are just on the opposite end of the scale to the puritanical Americans, no sex (well apart from the fact they have one of the largest pornographic industries on the planet anyway), but violence is perfectly fine.

I think that's what's going to happen regardless. Wii U will fade out in a couple of years and we'll have a single all-purpose Nintendo device that's portable but can be played on the big screen.

Citation please or is this just repeating the new meme?, as it's currently patently untrue, and I can cite source for 100% denial.
