Nintendo Wii U

Argh, FFS...been having some trouble with my Sonic Racing - kept crashing on the first play of the Golden Axe level so left the game for a few weeks, wasn't sure if it was a disc error. Came back to it last night and the game seemed to be working fine, did a fair few races though it sometimes sounded like the WiiU was having trouble reading the disc.

Tonight i come back to it and it's constantly telling me the disc is dirty, even though it's absolutely immaculate. Not sure what to do, was bought as a gift for me from Amazon before Christmas, so probably can't return it there, but worried it's the WiiU itself. Had massive issues with first Xbox which immediately started saying the disc was damaged (think even the 2nd time I turned the machine on!) and having scary flashbacks to that.

Have there been any other reports of issues with the laser inside?

When you switch on the machine the image on the tv is a plaza full of Wiis swarmed round the corresponding game they're posting about and playing...it was wonderful watching all these illustrations and posts from people around the world posting about where they are in the game, beating difficult parts...you could mooch around and tap on the Miis too.

Now I get to see the default icons explaining to me how to use my WiiU... :(

Oh right I know that but I thought it was called the mii plaza

No I just had no clue what people were talking about when referring to wara wara... Is that it's proper name then?

Yes, although I've no idea where this is mentioned anywhere on the system.

Darksiders 2 is £15 atm if anyone is interested: http://www.zavvi.com/games-wii-u/darksiders-2-wii-u/10481347.html

It's the japanese name. I don't know why people keep calling it wara wara.

edit: It seems one day Nintendo USA changed it's name for no reason because it never used to be called that (and why would it, it makes no sense to anyone). The Nintendo UK site doesn't seem to even mention the feature at all...

It's always been called that.

Because Nintendo Europe are in Germany and have been since the Snes days (at least)

NoE started with the advent of the GBA and GC; before it was handled by a variety of companies such as Palcom (?), John McKenzies (the newsagents), and another group called T.H.E. Games who are impossible to search for.

NoE were in Germany in the NES & SNES days. I remember working with them on the German translation of Plok! and used to phone them every day for a while.

EDIT: From wikipedia

Nintendo of Europe (NOE) was established in June 1990.[42] The company handles operations in Europe and South Africa.[42] The subsidiary is based in Großostheim,[43] close to Frankfurt, Germany.

But why are the servers there?

Just a pure guess but it might not matter where the servers are. NoE is a German company and operate under German law. I doubt they can skirt the law as simply as moving some servers over the border to Switzerland.

That said, I think the more likely answer is this just Nintendo being daft.

Could they not have a token office in London and declare that their HQ? Or am I missing something?

No clue. But I hardly see them transferring their HQ over this. I suspect it's a bit more complex than opening a token office. Besides they have a UK subsidiary already.

They should just open an office in Belgium, with 2 people, put all revenues through it and pay feck all tax.

Like MS, Amazon etc.....

You're thinking of Luxembourg there.

Anyway, Nintendo: weren't their European operations passed round a lot? I remember early NESes having Mattel marking on them, but later on the Game Boy and Super NES were initially distributed by Bandai(?), I think.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on with Scribblenauts?

It had a "minor" delay, which is now over a week, but had already made it into shops and dispatched to hundreds of people. It hasn't been recalled, so can't be that serious, and nobody has reported issues with it.

I have £40 in my eShop account.

When I bring my WiiU into the south of ireland, what will happen? Will it convert that money to euro?

I ask because on my laptop, I notice that steam has automatically changed to Euro down here...

Oh okay, I did not know that. Probably just saw SEGA being a bit more proactive* at the time and wondered why Nintendo weren't doing the same.

*by which I mean "had an address in London"

I popped into a local Asda today. It was as if the Wii U didn't exist. No mention of it at all. No hardware. No games. Nothing.

And thinking about it- I've seen more adverts on tv for the 3ds Paper Mario game than for the Wii U.

It really seems like the most underwhelming console launch since the Sam Coupe. Which wasn't even a console.

Maybe it's all a cunning marketing plan? Hmmmmm

Do you have an Asda Living where you live? Here in Lincoln, the main site has no Wii U stuff but the Living store has got a fair bit of stuff. In the Grimsby store, where there is no Living branch, they have plenty of Wii U stuff.
