Nintendo Wii U

It is strange how on a UK forum people are distressed at how the console is selling in the US, especially considering we have long since had more disastrous numbers for the UK.

Over on gaf they are going crazy about how it is performing like the Gamecube. Well I hope the WiiU ends up as good as the Gamecube - I had loads of awesome games on that.

It seems in recent times this forum is turning more and more into gaf which is just thread after thread of people being massively upset or massively overjoyed by something with very little room for normal discussion between. Anyone would think this is the sales number thread.

The WiiU sales have been front loaded - eager Nintendo fans like me buying it day one. We've got a pile of games we're happy with and are waiting on another nice shiny exclusive which we'll snap up.

It's a crossing the chasm problem they have... there's a real barrier for game enthusiasts who aren't folks like me

Lets face it Scott there's no one like you. ;)

It's really not hard - Nintendo themselves want success. They don't want another Gamecube, which may have nearly ended the company. Iwata might resign, the company might have to significantly shrink in the long term. Selling only 35,000 pieces of software in a month for their home console was not in their plans. It's all well and good saying 'Yes, well I'm okay because it's got the games that I want so it suits me down to the ground', but Nintendo are not getting the market share they want.

I dont really care what Nintendo want though, why would anyone? Nintendo remained profitable through the Gamecube era, how did it nearly end them (they made more than Sony gaming division during the generation if I remember correctly)?

I know the WiiU didnt sell as well as Nintendo wanted, thats why I said anyone would think this is the sales number thread. Surely thats where discussion of sales numbers is supposed to go? It is pretty much all thats in this thread nowadays.

Games coming in the next 2-3 months:

Monster Hunter 3

Lego City Stories

Scribblenauts

NFS:MW

The Walking Dead

The Croods (uh, that'll be shite)

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Mighty Switch Force

Runner 2

Toki Tori 2

So it's moved from, "No, the Wii's got loads of great games! (list of games)" to "No, the Wii U's got games!"

Maybe they'll be the first consoles in history to avoid the inevitable post-launch software draught that people always forget about.

Maybe the games on the new machines won't look exactly like* the ones that have been out for ages on other machines.

*holy exclusive armour-plating, Batman!

It's odd isn't it, posters on the internet appear to have the memory of a goldfish.

Some of the negativity towards the Wii U in here is embarrassing considering the short life span so far.

I wonder how many people in here were also in the doomed 3DS thread just after launch?

and - back in the day before minute by minute sales projections, like when PS2 launched or whatever - 3 months in, we had no idea how well it's doing.

Don't believe for a minute that MS are Sony are looking at this situation with glee...

I remember Boyatsea confidently proclaiming that the Vita would destroy the 3DS.

Oh them were the days.

I don't see anyone saying because it's doing badly now it'll be doing badly in 18 months time? Can you find any posts like that?

People are simply acknowledging facts - right now it is doing very poorly, and this will have (and is having) repercussions for third party support. Sorry if acknowledging that makes you uncomfortable. People predicted it would do poorly at launch, and this is vindicating them, similarly with 3DS.

I don't recall people saying 3DS needed anything other than a price cut, and those people were right too, so...?

After getting my ZombieU pack on launch day the only other game I purchased was BLOPS2. Would normally have got XBox ver but fancied trying playing it on the pad. The other 3rd party games were a lot cheaper on the other formats and I suspect most people who got a Wii U early have at least 1 other format.

Did pick up Sonic Transformed and Darksiders 2 from Zavvi at the weekend whne they finally dropped in price.

Not sure what message that sends to publishers but only one I am waiting for is Pikmin 3.............

I really like the console, Zombie U is brilliant original game and playing on the pad while wife watches TV is great.

Everyone else I know is waiting for XB720/PS4 and most think its a Wii with a new pad

The Wii U is doing relatively badly, the only thing that can improve it are games, there are no big games (and by that I mean Nintendo AAA) coming out until at least Christmas. So this conversation has at least 10 months to run.

:(
