Nintendo Wii U

So it looks like Wii U sold 55k in the US across January's five week reporting period.

I wonder who Iwata's replacement will be?

Vita did 33k in the same period I think?

Both those pieces of hardware were sent out into the market at the wrong time. I'd be surprised to see any decent software support for them going forward (third party wise). Especially looking at software sales:

Oh Mario Wynands, silly you. You must've misheard the conversation at DICE when they were talking about that high budget Wii U game that was hoping to sell "millions" over time, but only managed "tens of thousands". It wasn't a game, it was the Wii U itself!

55k lol. Sweet, yummy justice for alienating your fanbase with the release of history's worst ever gaming console, the Wii. :)

How the hell is the Wii the worst ever console? What a crock of shit!

Edit: just noticed the smiley, must stop skim reading things before posting...

Can't people look forward to playing a game even if it's not going to shift consoles?

Eh? Where did I say that? I was just responding to a post that said that after a terrible January and February, console sales might improve in March due to some good releases.

That said, the Lego game looks OK but I doubt it would be so eagerly anticipated if the Wii U owners weren't starving for games.

I like to look at this in a positive way - I'm sorta interested in the Wii U for a handful of interesting games (well, Zombi U and a few that have only been announced) but this probably means that the console will be dead cheap by the time the Wind Waker HD remake arrives. A Wii U with Zombi U for the price of a single Xbox 720 game? Yes please :D

I found the interface on the Wii really quite difficult to work out... but I really enjoyed the game. Only reason I stopped was that my Wii broke and because of the stupid limitations, I couldn't transfer the saves across to the new Wii - then, when I heard it was coming on 3DS and WiiU, I just didn't bother going back to it.

Ok. It sounded a bit like that's what you were saying. I'm sure you're right in that it's not going to change the fortunes of the WiiU but it looks like a lot of fun and I'd probably buy it on whichever system it came out on.

I imagine Lego on the WiiU is going to sell very well... just like Rayman would have had it been released when intended..

so - the WiiU has sold to, what, 3 million folks or so. NSMBU has sold like 2 million.

WiiU early adopters are mainly Nintendo fans and early adopters. The fact that sales are low means a couple of things.

There are no new games on the system yet at retail that these WiiU early adopters feel like buying. I haven't bought a retail WiiU game since Christmas. I have quite a healthy pile of games on the system.

The people will buy the next big game that appeals to them in large numbers. Games like CoD, by and large, didn't sell because the folks who really want to play it would've bought it on 360 or PS3. Only nutcases like me held out for the WiiU version.

There are no games to push the 'wait and see' crowd over the cliff. Anecdotally, looking around the forums - there's a large group of wait and sees... they're waiting on the big game that'll make them want the machine. They're also expecting a price cut - as a precedent was set with the 3DS.

Of course, I do reckon that Nintendo will be fine - they've got the 3DS propping them up and quite a few billion in the bank... but it is definitely a bit of squeeky bum time.

The frustrating thing is that they've been here every single time since the Gamecube released. Nintendo make life difficult for themselves time and time again by not having one of the big franchise games that drive the sales available at launch.

I suspect this time round, they figured NSMBU *was* taht big franchise game. But the more casual crowd who bought NSMBWii in its millions aren't in the market just now to move consoles - and the 'core' crowd really want a new Mario Galaxy.

55k is pretty good considering there haven't been any releases since November and it has old multiplatform games that run worse and are more expensive and a terrible online store and online account system.

EDIT: turns out 360/PS3 have never sold less than 60k in a month, not even during that period post launch where the PS3 had nothing but movie-tie-in platformers for four months, even Gamecube at its worst never sold as bad.

Its launch figures werent't bad:

NPD November 2005: 360 - 326K

NPD December 2005: 360 - 281K

NPD November 2006: PS3 - 197K

NPD December 2006: PS3 - 491K

NPD November 2012: Wii U - 425K

NPD December 2012: Wii U - 460K

It just desperately needs games.

Couple of things to consider there. The 360 was massively supply constrained for a good few months after launch so figures during that period aren't really comparable. The PS3 launch period sales were considered an absolute fiasco at the time, so erm congrats on beating that I guess.

The WiiU sales have been front loaded - eager Nintendo fans like me buying it day one. We've got a pile of games we're happy with and are waiting on another nice shiny exclusive which we'll snap up.

It's a crossing the chasm problem they have... there's a real barrier for game enthusiasts who aren't folks like me - they have yet to see the value of the system, in the form of it giving them games they want to play. They are neither convinced that the gamepad is anything other than a gimmick (although when you have one for a few days, you realise just how great it is... it's not something that they feel they need).
