Nintendo Wii U

My problem with F2P is, at least so far, it drives the design of the game to encourage you to spend money in the game... I just can't see how a rich single player game like Zelda or Skyrim could be F2P.

btw - that F2P Tank Tank Tank getting you the full game for 4.50 is a total bargain given that I paid 15 quid for it... and consider it good value for 15 quid.

It's more than that isn't it - aren't there 10 DLC packs in total - so it would be £15:90 for all of them.

Fucking hell, that point about devs not seeing the Wii U doing well enough at launch is sobering.

If Sony and MS don't do supremely well, is it all going to be fucked from hereon in? :(

That's exactly what I was thinking. The world these consoles will be launching into is so different to 2006 that I have no idea how they'll do.

I'm beginning to wonder if games consoles are approaching an extinction level event similar or worse to that which killed off the non-PC home computers in the mid '90s...

It's interesting that MS and Sony made these big content plays (meaning Music and Video streaming - Zune, Crackle, etc) but it turned out people actually wanted iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu.

At least that development has saved Nintendo a little when it comes to a media box POV. It also means that anyone who comes in and does that type of stuff even better (Apple?) are well placed to take the gaming crown too.

I dont think consoles are doomed...we'll get super powered new machines in winter, the rich and early adopters will buy...the more careful of pocket will stick with current gen for xmas..prices will stay 299 or so for a year and a half, then they;ll cut slowly and it'll become the current gen again. The Wii U will be left behind as a bit of a toy. Next gen games are gona get people excited again, I think. Im ready for the jump now.

Did you miss the part where devs are moving to F2P or are we blaming Nintendo for that as well?

I think f2p will mainly stay with PCs for a few years but im no expert. Imagine if Destiny comes out on next gen this xmas..or we get a PC perfect COD at xmas on a 299 machine....who here (with the money) could resist.... Hell.. a lot of people got new gadget rage over the Wii U...imagine the next level of gaming machines...this xmas! I think there will be less of the PDZ / Quake 4 style tentative steps...I think we'll get some seriously impressive stuff right out of the gate.

Yeah that's a possibility, Angel. The next couple of years are going to be really interesting for consoles, that's for sure.

Theres gona be a forum divide of who adopts, and people looking in all excited...and probably some naysayers who hate everything. It'l be exciting I cant wait.

That's the worry.

I personally don't believe F2P is the big bad wolf a lot of people make it out to be. Done right, which I believe it could be if it become an industry or even console wide standard it could totally work. The F2P for TANK! TANK! TANK! for example seems great, with essentially a chunk of the game being a demo mode and then the stuff you're interested in being purchasable for relatively small amounts.

Cool argument, bro.

I genuinely believe there is no merit to that argument.

I'm not required to write you a essay.

If there's one thing rllmuks really good at its predicting the imminent demise of nintendo

And how did that work out?

Now people are predicting the demise of consoles. Give me a break.

The traditional console may be dead. in the sense of a device you buy to purely and simply play games. We'll see in a few days time how Sony, and then later MS with the 360 position their respective machines.

I personally don't think they will be as bold in upsetting the paradigm, nor have the imagination to, as I would like them to be.

I think they will be plenty of people who are excited about the successors to the 360/PS4 and you'll glad get those systems at launch who haven't touched the Wii U. The Wii U is not a next gen system, it's basically on par, so far at least, with what we see on the 360 and PS3 all the time.

Those people saying that the poor sales of the Wii U is concerning for the future of consoles are missing the point that the Wii U wasn't really a jump in power and doesn't have much to distinguish it from the current consoles. I think they'll be a lot more excitement amongst gamers about the launches of the next consoles and that will filter through to the mass market. Imagine the people who see the first proper Call of Duty next gen game and jump on board.

You are aware that the WiiU has sold faster than the PS4 and 360 did at launch aren't you?

I'm not saying it's without it's problems - I'm not daft. But it's symptomatic of the market as a whole...

the danger now is that two big consoles are launching at the same time, and will likely share a lot of the same 3rd party content. They're hedging their bets just now with both... but within 3 months, one is clearly going to lead the other initially and they'll start to drop projects on the other ones.

Risk averse, high prices, no used games, DLC, download only... all sounds wonderful.
