Nintendo Wii U

Without games being developed, there isn't really much of a long game to come...or it'll be one exclusively of 3 Nintendo releases a year and a few downports with touchscreen crowbarred in.

Possibly, but for some people that's enough. Not everybody craves a new triple A release every week. Nintendoland & NSMBU would keep me going for months. I'm still playing MK Wii & both galaxy's, and I'm still trying to finish OOT.

Incidentally - Trine 2 has been updated. I believe there were some graphical updates too.

Such a lovely lovely game

I do think one if their mistakes was actually thinking the folks tht call themselves hardcore gamers would actually love a really hard and excellent 2D Mario...

I don't think that's entirely fair. I'm not a particularly big 2D mario fan. Never have been. They're ok, but, in my book, nowwhere near as good as their 3D counterparts, and in particular the Galaxy games.

Have any Unity games been announced for Wii U yet?

This is pretty funny, well done.

I think even scottcr would struggle with 3 big nintendo games and dregs. I think the Black Ops 2 online / sales joke situation has scared off all the publishers. If you can't sell the biggest game in the world on the platform, what hope is there for anyone else.

I'm one of those knobs that hasn't bought a Wii U, and it's the first Nintendo home console I haven't bought at launch since the N64

...

I put it down a bit to age (I don't have the time to dedicate to lots of games)

In which case Wii U is the console for you.

I don't think Black Ops 2 is a good example personally. The majority of people that play the COD games are already invested in them on the 360/PS3/PC where they undoubtedly have friends that play them etc. The WiiU version was never going to drag those gamers away from their friends lists and clans etc. Never. Pointing at it as some kind of sign of 3rd party games not selling is a ridiculous argument when you compare (just on console) user bases of over 100 million combined on the PS3 and 360 against the couple of million on the Wii U. Of course it was never going to sell gangbusters with those odds.

... because it came out later than the others and the vast vast vast majority of people who want to play it already have a 360 or PS3? I mean - it's *really* not that hard to comprehend.

I havent bought a Wii U yet, and i think for different reasons than are cited in the DICE quotes above. Firstly I thought the launch line up was uninspiring - played Zombie U for a few hours and found it immensely frustrating, Nintendoland was excellent fun, but didn't seem like the sort of game I'd sit and play on my own, and NSMB was pretty but a bit same old. Part of my reluctance to get into bed with Nintendo for another 5-6 years is that all their innovation seems to be on the hardware side these days, and the thought of plodding through another Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart cycle (for the 6th time!) isn't very inspiring.

Knowing that third party support is often lacking, I didn't mind buying a Nintendo machine at launch when it was £129 (GC) or £179 (Wii). But £300 is just way too much, and takes it out of the impulse purchase bracket for a lot of people, regardless of whether its worth it or not. Having bought one at launch, I felt pretty badly burned over the speed the 3DS dropped in price, I've felt wary about buying Nintendo hardware at launch, and it certainly looks like retailers are willing to slash prices already even if Nintendo aren't.

Finally, apart from NSMB and the Mario Galaxy games, I didn't really find many meaty games that i enjoyed on the Wii, and with the next gen and steam boxes on the horizon, I think I'd rather get one of those.

But 3rd party new IPs dont sell very well traditionally, so thats looking at the worlds largest established IP possible...and it still didn't sell. I get your point too but its not a good sign, and sure enough there are projects being cancelled now, EA, Activision etc are all downscaling their plans. People arent gona dump their xbox/ps3s either so pretty much no 3rd party has a chance on Wii U.

True. I wonder if Microsoft or Sony will push for cross-platform (as in X360/X3 and PS3/PS4) multi-player to try and ease the transition there for future CoD games.

Its the worlds largest game by a huge margin, and it was a ghost town within weeks online. It's sent a message to publishers, no matter how much you want to be blinkered.

I've noticed everyone keeps saying £300 for th Wii u, is there a reason everyone ignores the white model? Do the public see it as a £300 machine or that there is a delux option?

Same reason everyone ignored the Arcade 360 at launch. No one wants the perceived shitty version.

For an extra £50, you get a game worth £40, accessories that would probably cost more than £10 and entrance into a cash back scheme for eShop purchases. And it's in black. You should only buy a white one if you really want the console in white, or you can't afford the black one.

The basic model just felt too gimped to be a viable option I felt. Be interesting to see how the sales break down, Basic Vs Premium.

If it's like the Core/Arcade 360, it's only going to start shifting when the console falls in price.

All this doom and gloom inspired me to turn on my Wii U for the first time in over a month to see how many are currently online playing BO2.

Aaaaaaand my GamePad battery is dead. Just to add further negativity, it's got that PSP thing going on where the battery drains when not in use.

Aaaaaaaaand now I've begun to download a 1h48m update.

Good times.

Rumor but still interesting. Devs down on Wii U at DICE

At DICE, nobody has been talking about the new Wii U projects they have started, only the Wii U projects that have just been cancelled. Platform is in serious trouble. Publishers and developers from the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia mainly. Pubs and devs never recoiled from PS3 like they seem to be with Wii U (though this is anecdotal).

There was always the confidence that the numbers would get there over time with PS3. I’m not sensing that with Wii U. I had a data point yesterday at lunch with a high budget Wii U game that was hoping to sell “millions” over time. It only managed “tens of thousands”. It is one of the top rated games for the platform.

It just the games. Nintendo machines have always sold because of the games. The launch stuff was decent enough but it came at a bad time and people are done with those titles now. Anyone who is going to buy one will already have done so.

They really need to throw some weight behind the marketing on upcoming exclusives.

Lego is a good start. Then Monster Hunter. Then Pikmin 3. Trouble is that is it for the next 3 months and I bet they won't market all of them with gusto . How exactly are they going to sell it? That's pretty much it until a recycled Zelea game? No idea on a date for Wonderful 101.

I LOVE my Wii U and am convinced Nintendo can turn it around but it does concern me.

3 months in - you guys crack me up. You make it as if Nintendo and all their 2nd parties are just going to down tools.

I'm assuming the Nintendo Direct that showed us all those great games coming this year was just a big lie as well now...

Bullshit, I bet you're shitting bricks in reality. You know the situation is bad.
