Nintendo Wii U

I dont like nintendo's take on analogue sticks, and i hate big controllers. It's way to big for me, I like a proper gamepad. Just not my bag at all.

All this might make a tiny (tiny) amount of sense if you'd even bothered to try one...but you're just basically making stuff up to dislike it otherwise.

I don't think a single person that has actually used one has been disappointed - it just feels right and works incredibly well.

I still can't see it as anything more than a gimmick.

There were some good comments about this on the latest Gamelogical Society podcast.

Make better games. Gimmicks are gimmicks. I might buy a WiiU (for Ninty exclusives) but I won't be buying one because I can look at a map or in my backpack in a game. Pah.

But that sort of thing is being touted as a USP. It's unique, it doesn't make it good or necessary.

You're right of course Smitty. The GamePad is a shitty gimmick. Everyone that has used one and enjoyed themselves with stuff like ZombiU and Trine 2 is wrong. The rumoured touchpad on the new PS4 controller however will be a work of genius right?

Oh, and yeah Nintendo really should work on making better games. It's their big weakness, the quality of their software.

im not making anything up, its too big and it has a screen in it for no reason i can see a use for (for me). Controller in hand...TV for display. Just my preference.

They're not the same size.

Theyre the same width.

Look, Smitty has had enough of all these rumours saying just how good PS4 is going to be in the Orbis thread. Don't let it happen in this thread as well.

The epic amount of shit being slug at ubisoft on their facebook page is amazing. It's a total PR disaster for them.

I'm going to post 'You're worse than Zynga'

I just dont want a screen in my controller. The sony touch pad idea doesnt fill me with joy either.

Just hold it. I just compared the SNES, 360 and Wii U controllers and the latter two are much more comfortable.

LOL. I have a feeling through that their facebook team has been told to take the day off.

Angel the gamepad is a joy. It's stunningly comfortable (one of the only controls not to make my hands cramp) and whatever you may think about the idea of the screen it just plain works. I can sit here without the TV on and still play good games. Being able to play what you want while someone else watches the TV is so useful.

Not EVERYTHING, Miiverse is an excellent evolution of the 'online social experience' Can you imagine trying to police it if it was on Xbox or Ps3? But yeah, Nintendo need a fucking slap.

Yeah y'know what I mean tho. ;) Even miiverse and the os stuff itself hasn't been properly implement or threatens to be hobbled. Hasn't a new update stopped people from posting for 5 mins each time? Or the issue of the os being horribly slow?

What's also starting to annoy me now (I'd of thought others too but maybe it's just me!) is the numerous times we hear Nintendo devs or Iwata himself 'apologising' for delays or mess ups. At first it was kinda nice to see a corporation be honest. But to see it so many times now its starting to be embarrassing. I guess I'm saying, I don't understand why Nintendo are dropping the ball so much.

The casual market doesn't move on. As films, TV shows and music show, people like having the same thing over and over again. We post on forums, Twitter, talk to like minded people and move in similar circles - there's so much confirmation bias going on in our lives it's insane. If Wii Sports HD comes out tomorrow, as well as Brain Training HD and so on, it's not going to sell shitloads?

We talk about games, we love them and we're into anything that comes out, regardless how niche it could be. That's not how the casual market works.

I don't see how the Wii made them arrogant, it's still a brilliant piece of tech but it might not be what you want.

You mean like how Oni Training managed to move 3DS units in Japan?, afterall its predecessors both moved millions of units and casuals are like cattle.

Or let us compare the relative sales of Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort... obviously zero signs of fatigue with that one too ;)

Maybe they should try another Wii Play, as that will finally prove if people really bought it for the cheap bonus minigames or they just actually needed an extra controller afterall, I'm not betting on the minigame collection being the massive draw people thought it was at the time.

Well I suppose we can all hope Animal Crossing blows up bigtime in the West, but that isn't much use to Nintendo's home console either way.

All Nintendo have to push the Wii U at present is the same kind of stuff they trotted out on the N64 and GameCube, I'd expect the same basic end result if that is all they have available, selling to their diminishing long term audience (well it must be diminishing, otherwise, why were they losing over 10 Million customers per generation before the Wii became a hit?)

Until they stop releasing the Wii version.

Don't see why they would when the installed user base eclipses the Wii U by quite a margin. I mean Just Dance 4 on Wii has sold just over 5 million so far. The Wii U version did 0.15m, 360 0.8m and PS3 0.22m. There's no way they'll suddenly drop Wii support when it's selling like that. These people don't need new machines. They just want more games like Just Dance and to use the Wiimote they know and love. Adding in the Gamepad, the pro pad and the option to use a Wiimote is, without being condescending to the casual market, too confusing for them.

Actually in danger of sounding positive but the gamepad does have another positive for me.

When I use it for NSMBU I am playing on TV but sometimes if I find a section tricky I look down at gamepad and play and it makes it different or slightly easier, maybe because I am much closer to screen I dont know vertainly details or patterns become more obvious.

its fairly minor and probably indicates I need to have my eyes retested :) but its better than it being a mini map for Sonic racing which is utterly pointless
