Nintendo Wii U

Okay so assuming Just Dance 5 comes out this Christmas and all the next gen consoles are out.

Wii U is £299, MS and Sony selling for £399-449.

Which will the 'casual' go for?

They'll buy the original Wii version. They wont upgrade for no tangible obvious better experience.

Nintendo's marketing has been bad... currently, you need to use the WiiU for a few days before you realise that you want these features and controller in all your consoles. But it takes time. The Wii was instantly.

Maybe they should offer a nationwide rental scheme then? You shouldn't need to use a console for a few days to realise you should buy one really, that's a clear sign that something has gone wrong in the R+D process in my opinion. I worked in retail when the Wii launched and that was just crazy. We'd get people coming in, having a quick blast on Wii Sports instore and it was instant. They picked up the Wiimote and knew what to do straight away, and walked out with a console (when we actually had them on the shelf and not all booked up).

Nintendoland is just dripping in wonderful game design that you obviously don't appreciate.

Ah, an arguement on par with "you just don't get fun!"

Until they stop releasing the Wii version.

They;ll not buy a 250 quid Wii U for just dance though. The Wii got into peoples houses with hype, PR and Wii Sports. Once in...companies started to realise stuff like Just Dance would do some big business. I think it'll come out for the next 2 xmasses on the Wii...theres too big a market to ignore. Its impulse price point, its on the shelves in tesco / asda...its perfect.

The market is too diverse now, with ipads, smartphones, cheap laptops etc all fighting for peoples time. There wont be another clear winner just like the Wii was at the time because the landscapes changed. Nintendo wont ever be as big as they were. They shoulda foreseen this and adjusted accordingly. Wii 2, 199 quid, powerful enough, no crazy tablet, and market the fuck out of it. Oh and have Mario Galaxy 3 at launch, and Metroid / MK soon after. Theyve had years to prepare..what they hell are they thinking?

Mario Kart, new 3D Mario from the Mario Galaxy team and Smash Bros.

It's weird that we've gone from how exciting the Nintendo Direct was to 'Nintendo is doomed!' even though we know they arranged that Direct to counter the impending news.

...you do realise that there was a Mario title at launch, the best 2D Mario since SMW?

They need to bring out HD Mario Kart. It's being shown at E3, right? Could well sell fucktonnes of consoles, Christmas 2013

This would tempt me ..but its too much for one game...i'd want a controller too, im not using that tablet. All that to play a game that still will no doubt have that fucking blue shell in it, removing as much skill as possible and dumbing down the experience. Im not convinced.

The game pad has motion controls built in, does it not? You could use it as a steering wheel, Wii-style, with a screen in the middle of it acting as a rear view mirror or something, with a semi-transparent big fuck-off 'USE WEAPON' button overlayed. The gamepad is highly liking to fucking rock with Mario Kart U.

Well, I'm sure NSMBU is good fun (I'm still playing through NSMB2 on the 3DS which is good as well), but I'm not going to pay 400 euro to play a 2D platformer. If they manage to come up with something on par creatively and technically with Mario Galaxy, I'll be a lot more tempted.

You'd have to be pretty hardcore to pay 400 euro to play a 2D platformer ;)

Deleting my posts for some reason. Ive seen but not held, ive no interest in it.

I recommend you try it before you dismiss it.

2D overkill? NSMBU, NSMB2 (on another platform), NSMBWii...erm, what else?

And it's much better than the Wii version.

Yeah it seemed to close to the DS version, i dont think it generated the same interest as a full 3d one. I'll take your word for it, id not play a 2d mario anymore. I'd only be interested in a Metroid or a good Mario Kart.

Its not my thing anymore, its interesting to speculate on nintendo but they dont release much i want to play. Like I say...Mario Kart..Metroid..I enjoyed the OOT remake on my 3ds, i'd play the Wind Waker HD. Just not for the price, and i'd want a proper pad. I cant use that tablet, its not to my taste at all.

What do you mean by 'no interest though' - at the very base level it's just a pad with a screen in the middle. You can just ignore the screen and play as normal if it really offends you - it doesn't come to life and video you while you sleep or anything.

I can understand people saying there is no software that interests them (yet, because despite all the hullaballoo right now we all really know that Nintendo will deliver at least a couple of exceptional titles at some point), but to say that you have no interest in a pad is a bit, well, odd really. Surely any gamer is at least a little interested to see what can be done with it?

I just think it's really strange that you refuse to try holding the controller before saying it's not to your taste. It's a controller, it's meant to be held.

I dont like nintendo's take on analogue sticks, and i hate big controllers. It's way to big for me, I like a proper gamepad. Just not my bag at all.

the screen controller a triumph.

I still can't see it as anything more than a gimmick.

There were some good comments about this on the latest Gamelogical Society podcast.

Make better games. Gimmicks are gimmicks. I might buy a WiiU (for Ninty exclusives) but I won't be buying one because I can look at a map or in my backpack in a game. Pah.

But that sort of thing is being touted as a USP. It's unique, it doesn't make it good or necessary.

Scott's does. Then it uploads the video to Iwata.

I think it's not the right priority to invest a lot of money in gimmicks with questionable benefits over raw power in the base unit. The controller is comfortable to hold and maybe one day it'll have a game that justifies the inclusion of the screen. So far it's more 'because we can' rather than the next evolution in gaming controls though.
