Nintendo Wii U

Well that's my point. Unless you're making a game specifically for the wiiu, you're not going to be in a position to fully exploit it. Sure, every machine is different and has its little quirks, this though sounds like a good few couple of steps too far. Throw in the price of development these days and Nintendo have a problem on their hands, imo of course.

It's certainly salvagable but not without Nintendo really digging in and putting their money where their mouth is. I'm sure there's going to be some awe inspiring 1st party titles no doubt but I was expecting much more on the 3rd party front this time around. And if the wiiu's arcihitecture is correct, that's going to be very difficult.

Absolutely, the collaborative stuff is certainly Nintendo recognising part of the problem. Unfortunately for them there's a big old spanner in the works and that is that these collaborations are invariably with Japenese devs. And what does that mean? It means huuuuuuuuuuuge 'Nintendo time' delays getting them out in the west, if at all!

Nintendo should be aggressively, pro actively approaching western devs but they don't want to venture out of their safe zone. And it's going to hurt them.

It'd make more sense if Nintendo went to Eastern Europe rather than the West - there's more talent at cheaper rates, plus they'd probably find it easier to compromise on their procedures than in the West.

This is assuming we're talking retail, btw, eShop and indies should be a different prospect altogether.

The steering wheels aren't worth more than a quid to be honest, they don't actually do anything.

Wii Fit + board is worthless if you don't use it, great if you will.

So £275 is okay for a brand new setup if you're keen on the Wii Fit. There's no word on the Wii U version yet so the most up to date version is the Wii Fit Plus.

I know the basic usually sells for £199 but most people will probably tell you it's too much and I think the vast majority of us bought the premium bundles between £199 and 249 with Nintendoland included.

Maybe they really don't care about how easy it is to port PS3, 360 (and whatever the successors are) games over to the Wii U?

Let MS and Sony fight it out with exactly the same consoles with exactly the same games, while the Wii U is the only "second option" due to exclusives, different control etc.

You know.. like the Wii. And that did not too bad for Nintendo...

It does seem a bit daft of Nintendo to custom make something like this once again. Especially given how crucial it is to create a fuss free environment for devs. What happened to all this 'Nintendo courting 3rd parties' stuff. Oh hang on, that'll be 'Japanese 3rd parties' sorry my mistake. Apart from ubi obviously. ;)

The other two don't exactly use standard parts either so that's not really the issue. Digital Foundry seems to think that the SDK documentation was/is lacking compared to the Microsoft/Sony stuff.

Suggests that Nintendo revised something late on or were rushing the console out for a specific date. Probably the latter, given some of the OS issues.

Well the original Mario GP games were never ported to home even though the Triforce hardware it used was a just a GameCube with Sega's implementation of JVS I/O (like the Naomi and the Xbox equivalent Chihiro).

It's not out of the question, but I think Nintendo would prefer to do their own thing and just license to Namco for arcade, it worked well enough for them last time.

Except the gamepad for the Wii U isn't as intuitive as the wiimote by some distance and the machine is far more expensive than the Wii. And the Xbox/PS machines have had enough decent exclusives to make them their own machines (maybe not on par with Nintendo's, but still very good and arguably more varied).

I thought they were alright. Felt more like Ridge Racer than Mario Kart but I like Ridge Racer a lot too. They always have those Mario Kart arcade machines at The Bowling, next to a dance machine, some other racing game that's so generic that you've never heard of it and a far too large Deal or No Deal machine. Maybe some basketball hoop contraptions inexplicably called Slam Dunk despite being encased in perspex and metal and so impossible to actually slam dunk in.

This new one has Mario Kart 7's gliding in it, at least.

A few weeks into my current job we had a 'getting to know you' night out at a bowling alley and after a few beers I thought it would be wise to try and impress my new work colleagues with my not inconsiderable Dance Dance Revolution skills. I learned rather quickly that normal people are not overly impressed by a pasty, lanky fella staggering about on a pink and green neon lump of plastic while some camp J-Pop screams 'WE'RE GONNA HAVE A PARTY - HAVE A REALLY GREAT TIME!' no matter how many perfects you get.

I then followed this up by being thrashed at air hockey by the hot girl in accounts, firmly cementing myself as the alpha male of the office.

I had a similar experience at a work bowling night. One of the girls I work with wanted to play DDR, but was shy. I said I'd go on with her while everyone else was busy doing other stuff. I don't really play DDR but I'm fairly decent at rhythm games so would have got through a medium level song without too much trouble. She insisted on a super easy mode/song though which had the effect of me feeling massively self conscious as I stood there lankily, gingerly stepping on a flashing neon square every other second while some godawful song blasted out of the unit's speakers. Not helped by the fact that the entire workforce had noticed us sneak off and decided to come and watch.

Jesus.

With frantic stepping going on, it's not too bad and at least the illusion of having fun could be convincing. When you're standing there waiting an eternity for the next symbol to appear on-screen, more aware than ever of your 6'4 frame and your colleagues' eyes burning into the back of your skull and can sense the horror from the girl you're accompanying as she realises the mistake she has made clambering onto this neon fun vacuum that may as well be operated by a dementor, you kind of wish you were dead.

My gf absolutely refuses to set foot in a bowling alley. She fell over once while bowling or something.

Evil places.

There was some bizarre movie about DDR battles released in 2012. Like, not a documentary, an actual fictional film about youth style dance-offs involving a videogame that's clearly based on the early noughties videogame series with the serial numbers filed off. Someone on YOSPOS linked the IMDB page for it and I was amazed.

I wish someone could find that to prove I'm not going mad.
