Nintendo Wii U

Wel its nothing like any r700 series chip. Seem's like very customised design. Lots of fixed functions on the chip. Very unlikely to have a big Gflops number. Very differant to what was expected.

The fixed functions give the system the ability to do things 'for free' i.e your not eating up processor power. say for example it does free lighting then you don't have to instruct the chip how to do it you just do it. Seems like the TEV in the gamecube/wii in that respect.

Overall it's a very console like chip, differant from the ones in a PC card and basically designed in bang for buck kind of way. This also explains why the ports of some games were a bit shite. Devs will have to get used to exploiting the design.

He's posted another update on the 90's Arcade Racer page:

Sounds like we'll know one way or another next week....

EDIT: Also, the option to get a billboard is back open at £80 (3 of 35 left)

Nice one.. Initial plans to get a Rllmuk Billboard are underway ;)

Well the feedback from that GPU die shot seems to be "Urm.....that's a bit wierd". It's very differant to what was expected. It doesn't have 32 megs of EDRAM, it has 32 megs plus another 4 megs and there's some more lurking about. Seems to be about 37 megs of ram on the chip. It also has quite a bit of space for what is likely fixed functions but noone can really tell. It seems to be a far more custom design than anyone had thought. That so called slow DDR3 ram doesn't seem to matter that much as the chips design more than makes up for it. Interesting stuff.

Needs more brown. ;)

And angst, don't forget the angst.

In all seriousness, what's that top gif from? The Monolith Soft game? Looks great!

Yeah the Monolith Soft one , I think it's just branded 'X' right now. Here's another one:

The mysteries lurking with the WiiU's GPU continue to baffle people. There's quite a bit about it that we now know about now (352 GFLOPS) but there's so much spare space on the die. There does seem to be tessalator in there which is nice. My bets is that the GPU is based off the HD5550 redwood core. Everything about that card fits perfectly with what we know.

That NeoGAF thread makes my brain hurt. I didn't do computer engineering at uni so trying to keep up is quite difficult.

So far the Wii U is either the equivalent of two Gamecubes stuck together, a dark horse that needs to be tamed or a Lotus with a small engine.

Yeah, it's totally custom designed by Nintendo so there's a lot of staring at it going 'err'.

It's looking ever more likely that we're not going to really be able to tell the difference in performance between the Wii U, Xbox 720 and PS4 until we see them all in action.

I also think a lot of people have made up their mind already, regardless of what happens.

No shit. It doesn't really matter though because if the games Nintendo produce aren't tempting enough then they wouldn't have bought it anyway.

I hope this means the PS4 and 720 are going to be affordable if they're just off the shelf components.

It does seem a bit daft of Nintendo to custom make something like this once again. Especially given how crucial it is to create a fuss free environment for devs. What happened to all this 'Nintendo courting 3rd parties' stuff. Oh hang on, that'll be 'Japanese 3rd parties' sorry my mistake. Apart from ubi obviously. ;)

Custom doesn't mean difficult. My understanding is that there is stuff in there that actually makes their lives easier in some respects wrt certain effects.

However, It's going to be difficult for ports when as a developer you're trying to do as little customisation as possible.
