Nintendo Wii U

Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but MiiVerse has been tweaked. Think it happened a few days ago - maybe when the eShop was down.

Things like breaking the community index into pages, having a favourite community tab, a return-to-top button in threads, and so on. Nothing massive, but a few nice changes.

Seems more stable too.

If I was Nintendo, I'd ignore third parties entirely and run a HBO model. Buy or create a load of studios to the point where you can turn out a high profile game you can't get anywhere else every month. Third party access restricted except for exclusives that meet the standard.

About as much chance if success as aping the other two.

"Exclusives that meet the standard"? It's like a not-at-all dodgy way of asking for money off the developer for them to make an exclusive. Or they can go to PSN/XBLA/Android/iTunes/Steam without any such hassle.

If someone could perfect a HBO style model, and each mega exclusive could guarantee X million sales, or a slice of a subscription pie, the platform holder could well demand cash for access; essentially that's what the platform holder's licensing fee is anyway.

If there was demonstrated cash, some would pay it.

Zen Pinball 2 is *dead* good. Nice use of the gamepad as well - to help you focus on areas of the table you can't see and other things...

I downloaded this today. Whenever I select Plants vs Zombies table (because I was going to buy it) on the main screen it locks up my console.

So I went to buy a table, sorcerer I think. It said to go to the eshop. So I went to the eshop, paid for it and downloaded it. I went back into the game, it did the load up new table thing on the first boot but when I go to select it from the front menu it just says I have to go to the shop to buy it. WTF? As if I've not bought it when I blatantly have. Any ideas? Do I need to do anything else to activate the table?

Another more innovative way for Nintendo to get masses of quality content on their box came to me, but technically, another platform holder already kinda did it, AGES ago.

Nintendo pay for the development/publishing costs of other people's titles and they give them an upfront fee to do so.

If the game sells above the breakeven threshold, Nintendo and the original content provider share the profits.

Zero risk to the original content provider and Nintendo get more content to make their box more attractive to a wider range of consumers.

After a period of doing this, assuming it is successful, Nintendo would have built up a large enough market for potential licensees to willing take the risk themselves and they would have their virtuous circle.

I want ZombiU 2 to be announced ASAP. I fucking love ZombiU and given the time and the budget, I reckon that team could do amazing things.

Actually - one of the things I love about ZombiU is its setting. Refreshing and, considering it's made by Ubi Montpelier, they absolutely nail British humour and the drab look of our inner cities.

I want it set in Scotland though, where I can get out into the country for a bit. A mist covered drab field, raining, windy... a safe house in the distance and roaming zombies all around. Atmospheric as fuck.

I would like a gingy bottle as my melee weapon (and a rolled up Daily Record)

Oh. Sounds weird to me, ripe for companies to take the piss out of.

Why? the alternative is for them to pay Nintendo for the privilege of supporting their unproven system and take on 100% of the risk while Nintendo get to charge them a fee for the privilege, zero risk to Nintendo in the current setup.

Yeah but you make it sound like every other console launched with an already installed user base.

Trine 2 completed! Yay!

'Mon the Bat.

Trine 2 is really, really good. I've seen some reviews score it around 7. I just can't even fathom how anyone could score it like that once you get used to the controls. It's just so lovely.

Unless it takes a massive nose dive towards the end that is... Anyway, I'll be reviewing it soon to reset the balance.

The difference being that the other console manufacturers have a proven track record of delivering customers to licensees, unlike Nintendo so they are more happy to bet the house on Durango/Orbis, sight unseen or unproven.

The wii and the DS both had software sales approaching a billion units, so someone must have sold some games along with Nintendo.

Strip out the Nintendo part of sales and look at how many games were released on either system, and the average per title isn't amazingly high.

The PS2 did 1.5 Billion units of software, and the platform holder didn't have anything particularly massive chewing up a chunk of that pie. Of course we can continue to blame independent publishers and not look for practical ways to resolve the long standing problem. Just because you build it, it doesn't mean they have to come.

It doesn't nosedive - don't worry :)

I hated the Mac version as I just couldn't control it with mouse and keyboard. The game pad is perfect though.

I'd not seen this mentioned before - a bit (OK, a lot) dark, but a hint towards what we'll be getting at least.....

http://www.nintengen.com/2013/02/bayonetta-2-wii-u-confirmed-real-time.html

While it's not much to see, but the last part of the recent developer video for Bayonetta 2 had a 1 second monster clip at the end that was assumed to be CGI and not real-time graphics. The director of Bayonetta 2 Yusuke Hashimoto confirmed in a recent tweet that it was in fact a debut of actual real-time graphics from the game itself.

I think Nintendo misunderstand the demand for 'core games' as a demand for 'hard games'. Arguably, NSMBU is the most difficult game Nintendo have made in years..: but for folks mainly looking for shinies and eye melting visuals, it's not really going to sell systems is if? At the same time - those that bought NSMBWii don't see it as a reason to buy a new console.

Nintendo haven't launched with a face melting demonstration of their prowess since the N64.

We know whatever EAD or Retro do with this (for example) is going to look amazing... But it would've gone a long way if they'd had that stuff available for launch.

Now they're going to be up against the other guys at E3 and will almost certainly get lost in the noise...

Incidentally - anyone who think ZombiU graphics are rubbish is really smoking something. Atmospheric affects all over the place.

If that's true I'm backing the shit out of it!

He's posted another update on the 90's Arcade Racer page:

As I hinted in a previous update I have some exciting news coming next week and I'm sure they'll make quite a few people very happy.

For now all I can tell is that as of next week I'll be working with a team on putting everything together. They have previous Unity and racing game experience so I'm confident we can make this game the best it can be.

This means I can focus entirely on the design and art direction of the game. They'll be working on all areas that I need help such as Unity programming, physics, design, tuning, balancing and a lot of other features!

Sounds like we'll know one way or another next week....

EDIT: Also, the option to get a billboard is back open at £80 (3 of 35 left)
