Its one part of the whole package and about setting a principle, Whether people read that previous comment I made as tongue in cheek or not. Going by the negs most were totally oblivious to the intention ;)

If they can't be bothered to offer a Virtual Console service thats even on a par as the 3DS (all of the VC stuff on the 3DS PAL store is 60hz) then what other liberties are they going to take?

I'm old enough to have 'known better' back in the days of the SNES & Megadrive etc and therefore went to the trouble of buying imports to ensure my games were 'full screen & full speed' as we used to say.

However here in 2013 surely the Virtual Console is just a mild diversion / curiosity and so while 50hz isn't ideal it also isn't really worth getting worked up about.

Until the competition forces them to it will stay like this. PSOne games on PSN are the original bordered PAL releases and so are the original XBox games on XBL. I'm guessing because the issue doesn't affect US or Japan none of the platform holders care.

Competition isn't going to force their hands at all. No one has actually come up with a practical solution to the problem, so Nintendo and Sony have gone with the easiest option. Sucks for those who are allergic to 50HZ. Then again, you should have known this would happen and have imported a US console in the first place.

Mario and Yoshi is the only game on that list I don't enjoy; love the others. I think the NES Donkey Kong is missing the Custard Pie (Cement Factory) stage though? Or was that just in the Donkey Kong Classics version? Still, 30p. Didn't expect that from Nintendo.

I hope they introduce linked Nintendo Network IDs for 3DS soon, and Miiverse.

It's hard to have a practical solution in Sony's case due to the absolute clusterfuck that is european ps1 rights. Sony have actually refused to host a lot of 50hz games because there are no clear rights clearance for them, nevermind the 60hz versions. It would be quite dodgy for them to sell you a 60hz version of a game without proper clearance and it's not worth the expense in european publishers licensing the NTSC version. However there are exceptions - Resident Evil 2 and Tomba for example.

Ultimately it's down to the publisher, Sony can be held accountable for their own games (which predate their united approach) but there is nothing stopping third parties presuming they sort their rights out as SCEE are happy to host 60hz games.

In Nintendo's case they own almost all of the games they ever published during these eras, and have global rights so they don't have any excuse. Text heavy games with unlocalised text for 60hz versions are of course a problem but that doesn't effect enough games to prevent them doing anything.

Nintendo are happy to host 60Hz games as well. The Hanabi Festival games prove that.

So here's my thoughts on 50 hz.

Yes, it's a bit crap.. But... Do Nintendo not have to do this as the other alternative would be to translate the 60hz roms to other European languages? I can't remember, but I thought if it was a pal rom, it had to run in 50hz?

Might sound sloppy from Nintendo, but maybe it's more practical for the whole of Europe to stick with already translated 50hz roms....

The button layout is starting to drive me insane...I know A is on the right and B is the bottom button...but fucking hell I keep pressing the wrong ones. It's so annoying when you're in a menu screen and go to confirm a choice and hit B backing you out...is this the other way around on the 360 or something? the pad is too expensive to be trolling me like this.

archaic tv system

This is not aimed specifically at you but there is a portion of the games players who think NTSC was better than pal purely because of shitty ports.

PAL had much better colour reproduction(NeverTheSameColour = NTSC)

And it had far better resolution.

NTSC was a bag of shite compared to PAL but lazy games ports colour gamers opinions unjustly. We should be proud of pal :)

But you've highlighted the problem, they only do it on special occasions and for games not available in 50hz anyway. Some of the 60hz games on PSN were released in 50hz originally.

Now both of them can do better, but Nintendo are actually in the better position to offer 60hz games than SCEE but have decided to fob us off again. For Wii I could understand it a little, but the Wii U is designed for, and released during an era where the distinction is unnecessary.

So why can't they offer Mario and other arcadey games in 60hz? Language issues aren't a concern for most of the nes and snes library.

Anyway, this whole nonsense is just another reason to put my Super Famciom and flashcart into storage until I want them rather than selling them as I was thinking of doing.

From what I remember, SCEE only started releasing 60Hz games because there were emulation issues with the 50Hz versions. They're really no better than Nintendo in that regard.

You keep saying language issues aren't a concern, but who wants to play games in another language? Super Metroid's forced subtitles are a nuisance to give you one example. It would be stupid to piss off customers just to placate a minority in the UK.

Yeah, Microsoft did it the wrong way round for some reason. Probably copied Sega.
