Nintendo Wii U

Not really true, some true PAL conversions actually tweaked the games to run at the same update rate as the NTSC versions but with the superior PAL resolution advantage, win all round, takes work so most people didn't bother. A 60Hz software switch was enough for me, problem solved easily and cheaply, unless you were stuck with a 50Hz only TV.

Unless the games were PAL optimised, then the PAL release could just be run at 60Hz anyway and it would be the same as the NTSC version, they just can't be bothered to allow the emulation software to do it.

Streets of Rage 2 was a universal cart release for example, if you had a modded MegaDrive with the appropriate toggle switches, you could play the official PAL release as both the NTSC/J and NTSC/U versions, with different languages and superior update rate intact. An emulator can mimic that behaviour easily.

When you say 'update rate', you mean the actual speed of the game, right, and not the frame-rate that it runs at?

I remember somebody mentioning that because PAL Mario Kart for the SNES was coded to run at the same speed as the NTSC version, if you plugged it into a 60Hz console, you could make it run faster than intended, never have tried it though to confirm that.

Some games were PAL optimised, the code was reworked to update the game at the same rate as the 60Hz version so it ran at the same speed, but at 50Hz natively.

Most optimised games that I played did indeed have the speed bumped up, but you could tell it was still 'off' a little bit - and I'm quite certain they weren't running at the same frame-rate.

You are asking devs to find another 20% performance from apparently nowhere though.

The extra performance comes from the lower fps. There was a PSOne game called 'n20' or something, which was originally a 50hz game, apparently. When they converted it for the NTSC release, they had to cut the visuals down slightly to achieve the necessary fps.

Edit: I'm by no means an expert in this shit, and only going off what I've heard and seen and read.

Yep. A 50th of a second is longer than a 60th. The CPU runs at the same speed so it has more time to calculate each frame on a PAL system. A game developed to maximise CPU on a PAL machine would chug on an NTSC machine. It's a good job almost every game was developed for NTSC first.

Best way to make a difference is to make sure no one buys them.

The problem is that there are plenty of people who are either clueless or willing to accept it. So while you can vote with your own wallet, there are enough people who will still buy them that it's not necessarily going to make any difference and they will keep exploiting the people willing to accept it.

Or as deKay says, they will just assume no one wants them and not bother releasing much at all.

A quick question. I haven't watched the Nintendo Direct video so apologies if I'm missing anything obvious.

If I buy those games they are selling at 30p (I'll probably buy them all at that price) - will they be subject to the upgrade fee? I'm going to guess not as they are sold through the Wii U store?

Probably not the best time to admit I'll buy them all when everyone is complaining about 50hz ports!

quick question... had my gamepad replaced by nintendo the other week and since i have re-synched it, i cant see the miiverse on the gamepad properly. its there but it thinks i am not logged in, just showing what you can do instead of what games folk are playing/talking about.

everything else on the pad works fine like the shop, download and wii u chat.

anyone?

I've got another issue - playing Sonic Racing transformed on the gamepad, on the 3rd stage of the world career and playing the Golden Axe level. 3 times the screen has suddenly gone dimmer during the middle of a race, all the controls stop working except the home button and the car just careens into the nearest wall and sits there. It's happened in 3 different places in the race too.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm sat in the same room as the Wii U and I'm not getting any intereference/ loss of signal messages.

So I have no real cash going spare but deep down I have a hankering for a WiiU. I also am in possession of lots of unused tat and have found out that if I cart all this junk down to CEX I can come away with a Premium WiiU and copies of Nintendoland and Mario Bros.

But are there any downsides to buying a pre-owned model? Am I going to be stuck with an unwanted profile? Am I going to have trouble setting up the console for the eshop etc? Or is it going to be just the same as buying a brand new model?

It would be nice if they offered the choice of the 60hz versions of the games as well, for people not worried about getting the properly localised version, just so everyone was happy. I don't think I've ever played a game and not enjoyed it because it was the 50hz version though. I don't think I've ever even noticed.

The thing is Nintendo has put 60hz games on the EU service before, so it's not as if they refuse to do it. They just don't want to arrange to be given rights to 60hz versions when dealing with EU publishers and rights holders and don't want to even do it with their own games, unless it's a one off special occasion.

At the very least they should be doing it with their own games. It's not difficult to add a software switch.
