Nintendo Wii U

Quite impressed with the toughness of the gamepad. A week of Sonic Racing and Ninja Gaiden 3 has meant it getting quite the hammering, still as good as new!

Oh Mr Belpate your legs are so swollen. Anyway stop hitting the bloody thing. You know you'll regret it.

That thought crossed my mind the other night, NSMBU is the SMW to NSMB's SMB 3 - if you'll pardon the sightly tortured analogy and overuse of acronyms.

Having spent an hour playing SMB3 earlier (in its Super Mario Advance 4 guise) I have to say that NSMBU is still more like SMB3 than SMW in feel and gameplay - another sort-of remake of SMB3 using more ideas odd from Super Mario World than NSMBWii did, if that makes sense. The SMW influences are more presentation than substantial, IMO. That's not to diss NSMBU, just stating that objectively it isn't the spiritual sequel to Super Mario World as is often claimed. ;)

Did Nintendo say you'd be able to play Wii Virtual Console games on the Gamepad at some point, or did I imagine that?

They did.

They said there would be a Virtual Console for the Wii U that supported playing games on the GamePad. Not quite the same thing. I'd be really surprised if they upgraded our Wii versions at no cost.

Does someone who understands this shit want to explain this? http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=508802

It sounds like the difference between the Saturn and the Playstation, to me.

What I gather is that the Wii U on the whole is more powerful than current gen, but in places comparable or even slightly less efficient. Seems to pose no problems for developers now. Might cause problems if developers move to next gen. Architecture seems more suitable to 720p than 1080p.

If they run in Wii Mode, they could just add the screenmirroring functionality to the Wii environment itself instead to every game, couldn't they?

What I read is that mainly folks don't really know what's going on in the WiiU yet but it should make back ports from next hen easier and current ports with frame rate issues are due to not optimising for the architecture rather than it being not up to the job.

Or something.

As usual, EAD will pretty much put everyone to shame (edit: on the WiiU of course)

Pricing on the eShop is up to the publishers, not Nintendo.

Thank god for that now we can address the culprits directly...

Now I'm off to complain to the publishers of new super Mario bros and nintendoland as their digital download prices are more expensive than most physical retailers!

The Wii U it turn out is in its own way, just as much of a PITA as the GameCube/Wii or PS3 was for anybody coming from the PC/X360/Xbox direction. A bunch of custom, differently configured stuff which makes ports require TLC to work nicely, you can't just dump in the X360 version and say job done, you've got to spend time/money and effort to get around the differences in architecture which means you've got to justify it to the accounts department.

I thought the Wii U and 360 architecture were actually remarkably similar? Similar CPU family, and so on?

Nope, CPU is indeed 3 GC/Wii CPUs beefed up as somebody mentioned ages before it got released on B3D, not really the same as what X360/PS3 use. The niggling differences make porting more of a PITA than first thought, you can get it up and running, but have to spend time making it work nicely, just like on the PS3, maybe with less sweat.

"1.243125GHz, exactly. 3 PowerPC 750 type cores (similar to Wii's Broadway, but more cache). GPU core at 549.999755MHz."

Wow! Sonic transformed is brilliant in 2 player with one having the whole tv to themselves while the other has the gamepad. Works brilliantly.

That's what my mate an I did the first night I got mine. Loads of fun and you can get the character mods twice as fast.

Typical.

Theres me posting on Miiverse how awesome my early morning Sonic Racing session was going, I should have stopped playing whilst I was ahead. I should have stopped after getting some difficult SRanks i've been trying to complete for the last few weeks, but Noooooo.....

Thanks to 'The Rage  ', I now have a big colourful blotch on my gamepad screen.
