Nintendo Wii U

Right I've been out in the wilds for three weeks and return to a £40 Game voucher. Any pointers? Have I missed anything? I own Darksiders 2, Sonic Racing and Mario. No Nintendoland for me as I have no friends!

Skylanders continues to tempt me..

Deffo ZombiU, it's a corker.

I'm playing NintendoLand pretty much exclusively on my own and I still think it's brilliant, so I wouldn't completely write that off.

Anyway, Nintendo's savvy wooing of Platinum worked a treat on me. I was browsing for Wii U deals on Boxing Day; not particularly desperate for the thing, and then I saw both Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 in the 'Coming Soon' section and I could barely enter my details I was so fucking excited. Yeah, it may be a bit silly getting a console before the games you want are actually available but the inevitability of my purchase was so assured I figured it would be even more foolish to deny myself a brand new toy.

Really, really surprised at how much I'm enjoying NintendoLand. Looks like one of those Nintendo games but is actually one of those Nintendo games. I've barely touched Mario Bros. Got Sonic racing coming today. Gaming is good.

You mean beyond March? Not entirely sure but there should be a Nintendo Direct at the very least by then. That Emily Rogers person estimated that you've got the following:

EAD software group 1 (Last game: Mario Kart 7 in Dec 2011), EAD Software development group 3 (last game: Skyward sword in Nov. 11, 2011), Tokyo Group No. 2 (last games: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010), Super Mario 3D Land (2011), Monster Games - Pilotwings (March 2011)....Retro Studios - Donkey kong country returns (Nov 2010)...Hal Lab - Kirby RtD (Dec 2011)

https://twitter.com/Emi1yRogers

So if that's true then there are a lot of groups either with rumoured plans or completely unannounced games. Plus we ought to expect more on Super Smash Bros and if the newest Monster Hunter is coming to Nintendo platforms or not. I imagine it's likely to be multiplatform, since U is coming to 3DS and Wii U.

I know you said third party releases but right now most companies seem to be focusing on next gen so until we hear anything from Sony/MS then it's always going to be unsure.

I think the general understanding is if you like Nintendo games and the release schedule of their last three home consoles is enough to satisfy you then you won't have a problem with it.

If you're expecting it to be your main machine then yeah, I'd agree with your caution. So far GTA V hasn't been announced for Wii U at all, wondering if Lego City Undercover is supposed to go up against it.

As an addendum to that, there is a thread over at GAF outlining what the various Nintendo divisions and affiliates are, or could be, working on:

Definitely agree with this..the launch lineup of NSMBU, ZombiU and Nintendoland has been great, but Ive only really bought the machine for WiiU exclusives. It won't become the main console in the household but I'm more than happy for it to sit there waiting for the next big 1st party release (and whatever other surprises arrive along the way).

Its also bloody great with the family/kids.. Nintendoland and Mario Chase is an absolute must!

I'm pretty much platform agnostic, don't mind having everything under my telly (though price is always the priority) and will prefer getting the best version of a game rather than just strictly one machine.

If there was a new Mario Kart, Zelda, 3D Mario all on the shelves just now, with a steady stream of stuff like Metroid spaced over the entirety of 2013 I would be in there now. I just don’t want to buy zombie U and NSMB and (not) be twiddling my thumbs for the next 7 months as I await the next 1st party release. Which of course in that time the console will probably have had a price drop.

Reading through this thread has me very tempted... and with a Gamestop just outside work I was almost ready to fork out for one of these at lunch time today.

One question I was hoping someone could answer for me ... I have a few Wii games lying around that I never got a chance to play (Mario Galaxy 2 being the most notable) if these can be played on the Wii U's gamepad while someone else watches tv that would be a big bonus for me... So does anyone know? Can I play Wii games on the Wii U controller's screen or do I still need to use a Nunchuck and Wiimote for playing Wii games on the Wii U?

They removed the clock - which, to me, gutted it of any real challenge and, ultimately, point. The first game had you planning the day ahead and trying to organise your Pikmin to get the most out of them within the time given. The removal of any real urgency just made it a bit, well, dull. Actually, it's challenges were different -just not as much fun, really.

Exactly.

Call me crazy but I like some challenge in a game.

Short answer, no. You HAVE to use the wiimote and nunchuck and on your TV, Also applies to Virtual Console games unfortunately.

Imagine if that business partnership grew stronger? And maybe Nintendo trusted Platinum in doing a Zelda game? (or reboot or whatever)

That would be rather nice! Just look at Okami!

The Wii U will literally boot into the Wii OS and act like a bog standard Wii (with some features removed and HDMI support added). The Premium bundle has a sensor bar but all the connectors are the same, including the AV port, so if you keep your Wii you can just use that.

So apparently my consignment number doesn't exist when I check DPD's phone number to track my package..... Oh boy this is gonna be fun. Hopefully it'll sort itself out by next week, I really want to play Zombi U damnit.

You can't play wii games on the pad, which i think is a shame as there are some games which control wise don't require waggle or pointing.

The Wii U pad does waggle, though. You can shake to grab and spin in New Super Mario Bros U, for example, just like in NSMBWii.

So on the one hand, Wii compatibility is 100% but on the other hand, you miss out on all the nice Wii U features.

Presumably the only reason you can't use the Gamepad for say Classic controller supporting Wii games is simply because Nintendo have been too lazy to create a mapper between the Wii side and the gamepad. The same reason the new Classic Controller doesn't work, it's basically the same issue.

I'm quite sure it could be done if they could be bothered. I doubt they will though, they are quite happy for you to buy the old peripherals.
