Yeah could do. Although he does already have a Wii and 3DS; so does the online ID he uses for that carry over? Or is it a new online ID system for the Wii U? I guess I don't really need to use the online features as such, but it would be good to see the online features in action. That said, I'll be visiting plopboy in the near future so no doubt we'll have a play then anyway so I could see it there.

So if someone comes up with examples of how it would be great based on previous dual screen systems then you will disregard that based on fact you haven't played them much.

I didn't disregard them, I said I couldn't comment on them because I can't. Sheesh.

For the record zombi u is an example of good use of the pad. Looking at inventory or scanner on pad with no pause adds to tension which is essential to survival horror

Both of which could be done on the screen, i'm sure. Dead Space does on screen inventory in real time.

As for people piping in with 'maps' - is that a joke? You can also do maps on screen.

Mario kart 7 and Sonic Transformed are examples of how dedicated maps on a second screen are able to be useful features. Sure you can put a basic map on the screen, but you can do more on the second screen. It's not essential, but it can be useful.

You can also do 3D platformers with a d-pad and a run button.

I guess facetiousness will just have to do in place of a real argument.

Yeah, that's true. You can have much more detailed maps at a glance. I just wonder if that's really a big deal.

I can't imagine anyone would argue that controlling Google Maps on a phone would be better with an analogue stick and buttons, so it's strange how quickly a touch screen map is dismissed as a worthless addition. For a massive game like Skyrim, a touch screen map and inventory interface would be a huge improvement. It's not enabling any features that wouldn't be possible without a second screen, but it's certainly an improvement.

It's a bit early to know when we have little idea of how games will use the available features in the future. Last I checked the DS was pretty successful doing the exact same thing and we already have games doing it successfully.

Sure, but i'm not talking about sales, i'm talking about the true necessity of the feature.

I guess it's fair to say that things don't need to be a revolution to be a big deal, over time.

Thanks for talking about it in a normal way though, you'd think I was threatening to start World War 3.

It's been said a few times in the thread already but the pad makes asymmetrical gameplay possible. If you look at Luigi or Mario Chase in particular, these are brilliant games in their own right, but more importantly they demonstrate perfectly why the pad is essential for this kind of play. Like the DS, once developers get to grips with it, I think we'll see some interesting stuff that can't be done without it. Something like Siren would be brilliant on this - a sound on your pad alerting you to the POV of something nasty making its way into the house you're in on the main screen would be pant-shittingly good.

The maps thing in ZombiU really adds to the game. You cant pause to look at it, so you're glancing back and forth between the screens to make sure you arent about to get your face bitten off, swiping it around to plan where you are going, pinging it to get an idea of is something is nearby. It adds to the immersion so much, it feels like you're using a tool to help you survive, because it feels like you're doing what you would be if you were actually in that situation and had been given some kind of sat nav device. It also adds to the tension because they dont let you pause, so you need to constantly check your surroundings, again something you'd do in that situation if it were real. In other similar games the inventory/map screen can often be used to take a break and gather your thoughts. Here, checking your inventory or map just adds to the tension.

This of course is just one game, but that kind of thing could work well in many other first person adventures. I could see it being good if they ported Farcry 3, for example. As I think Pickford said, if they re-released the Fallouts (or even better, did a new one) and your pipboy was done entirely on the screen, it would be great, and would probably be an insta-buy for me.

I'm sure that some of this could be done in more traditional ways, but I like using the screen for stuff like this. ZombiU has won me over in that respect, as I could totally see how they could transfer it to PS3 or 360, but it would definitely lose something in the process. I dont see this being like waggle, where pretty much every game had to use it, or fit their controls into the wiimote/nunchuck combo somehow. It totally has all the other functionality, but with a screen as well. Its a really nice piece of kit to use, it feels good man.

That said, I am sure some games will feel the need to use it for the sake of it and mess it up by doing stuff that worked better without the screen.

A second screen Pipboy in the next Fallout game would be excellent.
