Nintendo Wii U

I can see benefits to the second screen not mentioned yet though. How about proper real-time weapon change, where you select it on the touchscreen rather than using contrived, failure-prone methods like 'quick select' slots on the dpad or radial selection menus like Red Dead Redemption. It has the potential to greatly streamline games.

As an early purchaser of the WiiU, i'm sure your opinion can be trusted as unbiased.

What can be done on it that couldn't be shown on the screen?

Local multiplayer with five participants, with one using their Gamepad thingy to compete against the other four in ways that only another screen can provide.

Sure, lugging another console and television over can provide a similar thing - but let's not get silly now.

You didn't understand my post at all and you obviously haven't played ZombiU of nintendoland

And anyone who loves games will love NSMBU

I totally understood your post but thanks for insulting my intelligence.

You, however, failed to understand that I was clearly being a little facetious. Only a little, mind.

Of course I haven't played those games, I don't own a WiiU. ZombiU which (despite its painful title) is the only one I'd be interested in from the launch line up as I've played enough Mario recently (on the 3DS). So, for me, there really is not enough justification in spending money on the console at the moment. For once I'm happy enough to wait until the the console and the game are cheaper.

Aside frim real-time maps and inventories, the other USP being touted, a controller that is a TV mirror, is not something I need, nor want, either although I can see how that may be a bonus for those in households where there's a lot of competition for the main TV. But it's not for me.

I'm slighty annoyed that I got hyped enough by a price drop to actually order one too but I do like the excitement of a new console (really) despite recognizing that the launch window is a long way from the best time to buy a machine. I'm now feeling very content that I've seen sense here though (assuming zavvi actually cancel the order)..

See y'all in six months when pikmin will likely have tempted me into buying one.

I was really not impressed by the console on its reveal but it's really only on using it that you can really appreciate it. In that regard its a tough sell for Nintendo. For Zombi U the pad is really integrated into the gameplay and its more experiences like this where it will excel.

The best thing about wii u for me is playing stuff like Mario and Sonic racing in lovely hi-def after playing loads of FPS on the Xbox and the way they've approached online with miiverse. Really feels like the joy I used get from playing stuff on the N64. Kind of a videogame palate cleanser. No doubt I could have played some of these 'lighter' games on the Xbox or PS3 but for me they just feel 'right' on a Nintendo system.

I was in exactly the same boat three weeks ago. Was seriously considering just calling Amazon to pick it

up again. Glad I didn't as I was wrong. Zombie U was the only thing I was interested in and it has easily justified buying it for me. Mario was the real shocker though because I thought it looked horrible/cheap - turns out the SMW comparisons were largely right, though. As for the what can the pad really do that others can't stuff - all the best games on Nintendoland. Simple.

I've not touched anything else on it, although some say Sonic is meant to be great. Thing is, I can buy most of that stuff for my 360 - the real surprise here are the three I've mentioned which represent, to me, Nintendo's best launch since the N64 in terms of must play titles.

Well my other half didn't know what to get me this year so she said I could get one of these little boxes of fun.

So I ended up going for the premium pack from shopto and got it the next day. Luckily the update went smoothly and the game updates went fine which was nice but what really impressed me was the weight of the controller, really light and comfortable not too sure about the shinny surface (especially since I got the black premium one) as sticky hands tend to show up.

The games I ended up getting where Tekken as it was only £25 from shopto and Yoshimitsu has a Link costume :), NSMB and Nintendo Land.

I've had a quick go on Tekken, it plays fine and I like the quick access to moves on the controller, which is a bit the 3DS version of SFIV. Though I have yet to try out the online.

But most of my time has been spent playing Mario and it has to be my favourite version since SMB3, everything just feels right, the map is cool and large, there are lots of challenges to do, switching between playing on the pad and telly is awesome but most of all it just makes me grin. I'm not sure why but is just is a lovely game and the baby Yoshi's are cute :)

Now I just have to wait for Bayonetta 2 :)

If anyone fancies adding me it is Plopboy

Cool, we've ordered a Premium pack for James for his birthday. But that's not until end of Feb so I may open it up and have a play with it before then. I assume it'll be easy to just create my own account but then factory reset the machine before he has it?

I'm going to order Mario and Sonic Racing. Any other recommendations for him?

EDIT: Wtf, I've just seen this...

Yeah smitty, but by that time the wii u wont have broken down. Id love to see a microsoft or sony console last that long without borking. This gen my wii was the only machine not do die on its arse. Twice.

My launch Wii U, as well as many others in Europe and the US was dead on arrival. Much like many 360's and some ps3's. All it would do was activate it's error light (says a lot about modern consoles that they are built with error lights)

Let's not start making bold claims about reliability when the machine has been out 7 weeks. It took 6 months for the 360 issue to become noticeable so if anything the Wii U has proved less reliable so far judging by the reports online. It was fairly common knowledge about DOA WIIU's on european release day.

For the record all three machines are actually manufactured by the same company (Foxconn).

Oh no, you can't open somebody's present and use all the features without them knowing! Sort it out, Nintendo :(

Isn't it a bit daft to buy a console two months in advance while it may have a pricecut/bundle deals by then?

I bought it via the recent Zavvi ebay listing, £225. I did post here asking if anyone had heard of any expected price cuts, but I guess no-one knows so I didn't want to risk the listing disappearing and then not finding a similar price over the next couple of months. So I went for it.

What I meant was, would I be able to create my own network ID but then reset the console. But it seems I wouldn't be able to then use my ID on other machines in the future. To be honest, I got a lot to play anyway on PC and 360 so I'll probably just keep it sealed and play it with him when his birthday comes around. Although the console will likely end up at his Mum's house so I was quite keen on giving it a play before then - which may have then tempted me to pick up a second console for at my house.

Assuming james is a child why not make a nnid for him and use that?
