Nintendo Wii U

So - let's say a game like Skyrim comes out. It's identical to the 360 version. The pad is a map and inventory. Would you still buy the 360 version? If so... why?

Certainly, I'll be getting 3rd party games on the WiiU from now on.

Realistically, I'd get the PC version if I were to buy it as I prefer playing that sort of game with a mouse and keyboard (plus it would be prettier, blah, blah) but I realize that's not the point. However, as Dandy_Sephry points out, buying the best version of a title makes more sense than buying the version which, for example, has a map on a gamepad.

That said, having a map and inventory on a separate screen would not be a big attraction to me as I am happy enough to press a button to bring up such features in front of me, and feel that I would maybe rather do so than look down at my lap.

But I don't play Skyrim or similar so am probably not the best to ask.

As I said, I've ordered one, will play it and enjoy it for sure but, as with every single Nintendo console I have owned (which is all of them bar the NES) I will be very, very surprised if it becomes my go-to game console for multi-platform titles. Nintendo's backward online solution will be enough to keep the PS3 and 360 active I'm sure, even without whatever Sony and Microsoft choose to release for their next hardware generation.

Having enormous connectivity problems with my Wii U at the moment. Initially I went through automatic setup and did manage to get the big system update on Christmas Day though it did time out several times.

This evening I put in Nintendoland for the first time and the update immediately failed, repeatedly, with an error code. After scratching my head I went off and added in all the details for my internet connection manually as some have suggested here and it did work. The Nintendoland update started downloading (albeit incredibly slowly) and eventually installed.

Now though nothing's really working. I can't get into the eShop and although I have Miis running around my Nintendoland plaza I can't post anything without further errors. Are there remote server problems or is the wifi connection on the Wii U pitifully poor or something? I don't have any problems with any other device, including the 3DS.

Playing Wii games in Wii mode through HDMI looks like a jaggy bag of shite, doesn't it? Am I right in assuming the jaggies might be blurred out a bit if the Wii U hardware was connected to the telly through either the original Wii RGB SCART or component cables? I'd try it out just now, but my younger sisters have all my old Wii stuff just now. Should I try and get back the old cables? I'm wanting to play Skyward Sword for the first time, but the crispy jagginess through HDMI is making my eyes bleed.

The wife got me one of these for Christmas along with ZombieU and AC: AE. In the process of downloading the update for it now.

I'm unsure about getting Mario (platformers haven't been my thing for a while now) so other than than and ZombieU, what's the other games worth having?

So I've been hoovering up Wii games that I've missed out on and I'm in love with Pikmin 2 (I know, it's a GC game technically) so much cuteness in one game! Pikmin 3 is going to be great right? Wonder what they'll do about the controls, the pointer stuff works ace in 2 but obviously they'll want to go with Gamepad controls.

If you aren't fussed about Mario or Nintendoland, I'd go for:

Nano Assault Neo - Twin Stick shooter available on e-shop

Mighty Switch Force - Platform Puzzler sliding from e-shop

Sonic Racing Transformed - if you don't already have it on another format

On the Pikmin game in Nintendoland it uses the stylus, seemed to work really well but obviously limits the use of other buttons on the pad.

@Nap Ah really?! Interesting. I guess they can't make it the only option as not everyone may have a Wiimote.

Here: http://www.ign.com/a...-new-controller

Pikmin hasn't changed much -- in fact, if you've played New Play Control! Pikmin for Wii, then the controls haven't changed at all. You can play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, pretty much ignoring the Wii GamePad (which still will serve as a top-down map screen and replay analyzer). Alternately, you can play with the GamePad, but the Nintendo representative on hand pushed the Wii Remote combo on me.

Conversely, I'd like an option to turn the Gamepad screen off sometimes and still use the controls whilst using the big TV, as the temptation is always there to look at the pad.

(there is an option to "sleep" the Gamepad screen but it comes back on as soon as you press any buttons or move the stick)

I read this post before but now that I actually have one this seems like an incredible omission. Surely it'd at least double battery life when you're playing on TV.

Loving it so far though. Spent a couple of hours just messing around with the system yesterday - not counting the ridiculous update... - before I even booted a game. Planning to take it to my parents for a few days and get some Nintendoland multiplayer going!

Yes, 'fraid so. They don't have to be M+ but it's probably worth going for those just to future proof yourself.

May be worth seeing if there are any of those Wii Play Motion packs still knocking around for £20, comes with a M+ controller.

I couldn't get mine to connect to my parent's Sky router over Christmas at first, the only solution I found was to switch to WEP security.

My old shitty Sky router was a Dlink. Utter shit. Virtually nil wifi range, Wii and MacBook couldn't see it at all, kept wiping its own settings, DHCP rarely worked. Then one day it changed its IP address from 192.168.0.1 to .1.1 all by itself. Pile of shit.

My Sagem replacement is better, but still shit.

Provider ehm provided routers are so often shit. I'm glad that my current provider just offered a modem to connect to the cable, with a single ethernet port coming out of it. Configure once, and forget. Then you can put your router of choice behind it, currently I use an ancient LinkSys Wireless G 54 series which is at least 8 years old, but works a treat. Although I'm considering upgrading to gigabit networking next year, as our internet connection is now faster than our own network (120mb on paper at least, I doubt it'll make a huge difference).

I changed the channel on my router (and stuck the Wii U in a DMZ for good measure) and it seems better today. So I guess it is just an interference/poor wifi thing now. I've ordered a cheapo Wii LAN adaptor off Amazon (apparently they work fine on the Wii U too) and I'll homeplug it up when it gets here, should sort out the problem for good.

You are odd

It was your suggestion that the consoles advantage is in having a map and inventory on the controller screen. If that's a selling point then I am happy to wait until there are exclusives that I actually want, which is some time off looking at the release schedule. Fucking zavvi better let me cancel though...
