Nintendo Wii U

Nope. On mine I don't think I've ever noticed the fan. If there's a disk in its a right noisy beast as it seems to constantly spin. Playing a download game though the thing is pretty much silent and its 5 foot from me.

Others have reported mixed results too.

The kids have gone to bed now and I can do a proper test - it was the drive all along, it seems to make a noise even when not playing the game. Without the disk it is similar, maybe a touch quieter than my 360, yay! I don't mind noise when I play, it's distracting when watching quiet scenes in films on Netflix. I'm a happy chap if all I have to do is eject the disk. This might make me download games in future.

I'm yet to hear my Wii U make any noise.

You can hear mine, tiny bit quieter than the slim 360, pretty quiet really. But it gets a bit louder with a disc in. There's a lot of reports of noisy ones according to a quick google so count yourself lucky that yours is completely silent.

It's extremely quiet without a disc. However, if there's a disc inserted, whether you're playing a downloaded game or browsing the menus, the drive will be perpetually whirring regardless of whether it is currently in use. Playing Mario sans disc is great for that reason, yet being accustomed to the quiet also makes it disproportionatly irritating if another game has been left in the slot.

Another thing I've noticed is that Zombi U doesn't like it when there's a background download going - it's suddenly much jerkier than usual, but as soon as that's finished, fine.

am having real problems with mine atm, for some reason i cant get any of the online stuff working. it says that it isnt connected to the internet yet sometimes it might download an update (like last night) or allow me to use miiverse or the eshop, yet not netflix or youtube.

the console sits in the same place with all the others, the wii, ps3 and 360. all the others work fine and is about maybe 15 feet from the router on the same floor. strange how sometimes it works fine although mostly it falters.

its really frustrating me now. anyone got any ideas?

cheers.

Have you set your connection up manually? I had a nightmare with my connection till I did that. Set a manual IP address and DNS. I used google DNS - primary: 8.8.8.8 and secondary: 8.8.4.4.

no, it set it all up. i will change the settings now. cheers. :)

I had a problem downloading the update at first as well. It would pop up with an error message after half an hour or so. Gave it a couple of shots before taking my problem to Google. Found a US user who was having the same problem. He'd contacted Nintendo's customer support, and after a few of the usual suggestions failed to work, they advised him to move the console right next to the router. Literally no more than 15cms away from it (he'd had it originally set up 6ft away from it, a similar distance to my own set up). Ridiculously, this actually fucking worked for both the US guy and myself  Give it a go. Must be some sort of interference problem.

Since installing the MASSIVE initial update, I've moved the Wii U back to where it was originally, by the TV, and subsequent updates (playing NSMBU for the first time, for example) have installed completely fine. Maybe that first big update fixed this up but good. Fuck, I dunno.

NNID is Calashnikov, by the way. Have been meaning to add some of you up, but just can't face using the gamepad for anything other than mortally fucking up some Goombas

Depends on who you ask. There are those who'll say "it's not sold out, it's doing terribly" and there are others who go "you can still get them, that's better than the Wii!"

I think it's hard to separate from the recession and performance of the retail sector right now, we ought to know better come March.

just got mine. and it is certainly lovely.

added myself to the list - so please add me as i have no friends who are even remotely interested in the Wii U :(

i take it all back, mario is an utter joy to play - and looks lovely. haven't had a blast on nintendoland yet - but don't think zombi u is my thing. just feels so grim. but thats me rather than the game.

what i don't like though is how slow the interface is. its a total dog when you are used to an iPad or moderately modern computer. i hope that can be sorted out because at the moment its really getting on my nerves.

Zavvi are doing the premium pack for £224.99 on ebay right now... http://www.ebay.co.u...id=431958362804

Fuck it, bought. I've been uhhmmming and aaaaahing for the last few days, that's the tipping point. It's my birthday in January so that should be Mario U and Zombii U sorted too  I really hope it gets delivered earlier than between Jan 7th and 9th though. But still, can't complain too much.

With all these price cuts and the like, is this not selling that well then?

Seems so. Every store over here is bulking with them. The ZombiU pack was a bit of a rarity in the first week or so, but it's available everywhere as well now. The original Wii couldn't be had for love or money the first few months after launch, there were waiting lists and all. And Nintendo said beforehand they expected to have trouble meeting customer demand due to low production, fearing they would not be able to get enough units in the supply chain. Doesn't seem to be a problem at all.

That said, I expect sales will pick up once more games appear and the Nintendo big hitters come out. The launch lineup is pretty weak for the average gamer after all, considering they'll probably mainly be interested in a new MarioKart / Smash Bros / Zelda etc.

Bit gutting that it's available for £50 less the day after I bought one... I can't quite get my head around what Zavvi / The Hut are up to either. They're the same company yet on their 'outlet' thing on Ebay - surely the most expensive way for them to sell it - it's down to £225, on the Zavvi website it's dropped from £280 to £260, while on The Hut website, where I ordered from, it's gone *up* from £280 to £295. I was thinking of ringing them up to see if I could get them to refund the difference but now I'm not even sure what I'd say.
