Nintendo Wii U

Is there going to be some sort of virtual console coming to the eshop??

Also, more curious than would buy this, but is the console capable of 3d output? I'm surprised we've not seen virtual boy games released.

There's already the Wii VC.

Many of the games are already in 3D, so yes.

VB games would suit the 3DS more.

I haven't bought Mario either, I want to but just haven't got round to it. Where is the best price for it?

You're missing out on the best game of the last 15 years.

It's £35-ish in a few places (slightly cheaper at Shopto, I think).

ASDA have the Wii U, ZombiU and Mario for £381, ASDA is right around the corner from me. Seems perfect! :D

The best deal I found in the end - and just went for - was at The Hut. You can get the Premium console plus Mario for £315, including next day express delivery, if you use the 'CHRISTMAS' discount code. (Plus a bit of Quidco action if you like that kind of thing.)

Three days into wii u ownership now and what's surprised me most is what I would regard as its killer feature - it's not that Mario is a glorious love letter to gaming from my youth packed with so many little touches to constantly amaze and bring a smile. Nor is it the fantastic integration of gamepad in ZombieU which is currently very much feeling like one of my goty's.

No it's miiverse which is a work of utter genius. Cannot believe Ninty a company so backward with its embracing of the Internet until recently has just delivered such a spectacular online service. Spending so much time on it and love checking what people on here have done (macosx in particular). It's just a joy to use and create a great community feel.

A stunning games system this. Totally in love.

Move over, Scott!

Pff.

I'm serious. It might even be longer than 15 years. I haven't decided if it beats Mario 64 yet. If so, then nearer 30 years.

He meant "best 2D Mario game in the last 15 years", right? Not that that's right, since Yoshi's Island was 1995 making it it's the best one in 17 years.

No. Best GAME.

And I didn't like Yoshi's Island as much as SMW or Mario 64.

Anyone played many games on the actual gamepad itself ? I know not every game supports it (such as Zombii U) but I must admit that it is an appealing factor due to being able to sit in the living room with the old man. It's a matter of when rather than if when I get a Wii U though :D

I've probably played about half of my time on Mario on the Gamepad. Works brilliantly.

I've also played a bit of Neo-Assault, works well too, just a little less so due to occasionally not being able to see the bullets and enemies as well as on the TV.

Certainly, playing on the Gamepad is the killer feature I expected it to be.

Picked one up along with a motion plus do I can play some multiplayer Super Mario Wii which I picked up alongside ZombiU

Guy serving me was all 'Does this one play DVD's then'

I hit back with a 'I dunno, my DVD player does though, this plays games'

The knob.

Conversely, I'd like an option to turn the Gamepad screen off sometimes and still use the controls whilst using the big TV, as the temptation is always there to look at the pad.

(there is an option to "sleep" the Gamepad screen but it comes back on as soon as you press any buttons or move the stick)

Mario U really is something special. And this isn't just nostalgia or rose-tinted specs here, because I've been playing through NSMB Wii over the last few weeks with my 3-year-old son. The new game is so much better and I'm not really sure why, it's just so much more vibrant and joyful and it's a delight to play. My son's too young to really use a controller so his involvement with the Wii game was to offer advice and loudly berate me when I missed some coins; but the look on his face this week was an absolute picture when I handed him the gamepad and he realised he could actually help out by tapping the enemies to make them disappear or creating platforms for Daddy to use. Wonderful stuff.

Serious question though, can someone explain Miiverse? It just looks like a load of unstructured GameFAQs message boards to me, and some random stuff on the main screen when I turn the console on. What am I missing? I don't really get how I'm supposed to use it.

Wii U has been purchased! £199 for basic pack (2nd hand but all new in the box unused! apparently someone bought 2 online and didnt need one says indie man)

Plus zombieU, Mario U , +Nintendo land for £112 from CEX.

Currently downloading the mega update thing after a fairly painless virgin media connection setup. Kotaku article saw me right and all sorted in under 10 minutes. Didnt even need to touch the router thankfully! Sadly the remote doesnt seem to work as a tv remote with my matsui telly.

The controller's screen is beawtiful! The sound on it is creepily good too!

NSMBU is probably the most fun I've had with my kids, and is so beautifully made.

One annoyance is the Wii U's fan noise. Louder than my slim 360, but not as bad as the original 360. Can't hear the drive spinning at all, just the fan.

Nope. On mine I don't think I've ever noticed the fan. If there's a disk in its a right noisy beast as it seems to constantly spin. Playing a download game though the thing is pretty much silent and its 5 foot from me.

Others have reported mixed results too.
