In terms of Zelda I wasnt keen on Twilight Princess or Skyward sword. The art style doesnt appeal to me on a basic level. And beyond that in some ways they felt less epic than the preceding Zeldas

WW is my fave zelda followed by Ocarina. Even unfinished the open nature of WW with the gorgeous ocean etc...

So a proper Zelda like WW but finished please.

Oh and surely if they wanted to "pad" the games schedule they could do worse than HD update Mario Galaxy and a few other games from last gen and gen before?

I bought it. It probably didn't help it came very late in the console's life, was very expensive and required the memory expansion. People also thought it was 'light on content' due to the smaller amount of dungeons. I remember at the time people considered it more of an overpriced expansion pack/'sidestory' to Ocarina than a game in its own right. These days people would probably say it should be DLC.

You bought it. Did you play it? I remember people thinking it was going to be a few extra dungeons for OOT, it certainly didn't turn out like that so I don't think anybody would think it should be DLC. Sounds like you didn't get past the diary. :)

Zelda has always been about abstract artstyles, even stuff from the Link to the Past era is heavily influenced by the work of Moebius (bottom), as is a lot of Miyazakis stuff.

Wanting it to be dark and immature and realistic? It's not like we're short on games like that.

I'm laughing at Napoleon, who buys every Modern Warfare at full price for the 6-hour singleplayer campaign, complaining that a 40-hour game is "basically DLC" though.

It seems you've misread my post pretty spectacularly, which makes your laughing sound pretty stupid.

Yeah, I played it. And I liked it. Note that I'm not complaining about the game, I'm just mentioning the reasons why I think it wasn't commercially successful at the time, mainly due to the perception a lot of people had of the game.

asset re-use

Zelda is a fairytale and should stay like that... there's nothing saying that fairytales can't go dark though.

Thats exactly the point I was trying to make... but with loads of working things out (exploration/navigation/the plot/puzzles) for yourself (rather than assuming all the people playing it are slightly thick 12 year olds).

The really interesting thing about a debate on Zelda though is how none of it is to do with the controller and yet its the fricking controller that Nintendo seem to spend all of their time developing

So I've got a Wii U coming soon and just wondered a few things, sorry if they've been asked before it's a big old thread.

I'm getting one via a mobile phone free gift scenario so I think it will be just the basic pack.

What software comes with the machine? Are there games bundled like Wii Sports was with the Wii?

Is it backwards compatible with Wii games and Controllers?

Well - I think it's a given that the gamepad will feature as a key item or capability in the next Zelda.

But I really really did like the proper sword fighting of Skyward Sword.

Looking back on the history it seems there was confusion because MM was being developed at the same time as what turned out to be Masterquest. So while what you said possibly held true months before launch I don't think it applied at release. So for you to suggest people would now think MM should be DLC suggests you have confused it with Masterquest.

It also sold quite well 3m copies. The big surprise with MM was how good it was, nobody expected that. The point was it was a darker and creepier OOT and that seemed to put people off. Best game ever though.

I've been campaigning for a 3DS remake of MM ever since playing OOT 3D last year, I hope we see it one day.

I'd rather the next WiiU Zelda was more like it than see a remake. I wasn't keen on WW because after the 'darkness' of MM WindWaker was too far the otherway. TP was too big with too little going on and Skyward Sword was rubbish.

The basic machine doesn't come with any software, Nintendoland is bundled with all of the non-ZombiU Premium machines.

It is backwards compatible with all WiiU games and controllers. However you will need the Wii controllers to play Wii games. The Wii mode is completely separate from the main WiiU menu and when you enter it the Gamepad is turned off.

I do think that it was a strange time to release the Wii U. There are so many big hitters out there that my zombie u sessions are shorter as I try to fit in a bit of Far Cry 3, A Creed 3, Walking Dead etc.

It should of been released in the summer IMHO and then could have built up some momentum for Xmas.

There are some brilliant games out this Christmas... ACreed and CoD are obviously available on the WiiU anyway. The big one missing is Far Cry 3... (incidentally - how well has that sold?)

Walking dead has been slowly released over the year, so I wouldn't count that one in.

The main thing for me is the way it's being communicated to the user. Again, at the weekend, a friend of mine asked if I had one of those new Nintendo things. He at least knew it was a completely new machine, but he did admit that I didn't quite get 'what it was all about'.

Meanwhile, last night, the missus watched Stepbrothers on telly while I played Mario on the pad on a big comfy rocking chair.

I dont get the 'people don't get it' thing. The general public never get what things are. If you don't study something like we do then you don't get it. I have had non gamers ask me what the following are / do over the past few years.

Kinnect

Sony Move

Vita

3DS

Unless its in their face or are being told to buy it people don't really care.

I really like this console. It feels really satisfying having an up to date nintendo system for a change.

but....to play devil's advocate....how would we feel if this is Nintendo's last home console?

that leaked Xbox Doc indicated that MS are expecting everything to become cloud based after the coming gen - which (if the power resides elsewhere) kinda of renders home consoles obsolete in the traditional sense.

it makes no economic sense for nintendo to compete with the big boys in the cloud - when their strength is in their IP's - so what would that mean?

(GULP!) Mario on a Playstation? Atleast the Graphics would be good ;)

all I know is that two regular folks I've spoken to have struggled with understanding what it is...

I obviously set them right.
