Nintendo Wii U

The best thing about the Wii U is the fact its got rid of that bloody sensor bar and the terrible motion controls.

Say what you like about motion controls, but the sensor bar hasn't gone away and...

  1. sensor bar ⇒ pointer ⇒ Win. Stuff like Sin and Punishment 2 makes that shit feel like part of your hand, it's purest zone.
  2. camera-in-controller pointer implementation ⇒ superior (to dual analogue) FPS controls (with approximately 3 games - MW: Reflex, Black Ops and MW3 - getting them just right :()

They should have called it Big Wii. Then we could have gone back in time 6 years with lots of immature comments.

I reboxed my faulty WiiU back up again last night. Then, after a drink, decided it must work, and it was just me doing something stupid with the wires. So I unboxed it and tried again, to no avail. :(

Pointer controls are terrible, I'm glad they got rid.

I disagree. Pointer controls were one of the more successful aspects of Wii's controller revolution. I'm heartily glad we'll all but see the back of aimless waggle-to-win controls, but pointer controls worked great in so many games - they certainly added something to Mario and worked great in the likes of Metroid Prime: Corruption, Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead Overkill and Trauma Team, to name but four.

You can usually redeem eShop points with your Stars,

You can't, unfortunately. You can get points for the Wii and DSi shops, but not for the Wii U or 3DS eShops.

I still don't understand how to get the 10% discount on all eShop titles?

You don't.

You buy games in the eShop and get points worth 8% of what you bought. Get 500 points, and you claim a £5 voucher.

NintendoLand is boiled in Nintendo genius.

Last night, me and me boy played through loads of levels of the Pikmin game. Where previously, co-op games didn't work well as he couldn't really keep up or get a hang of the controls... This one is just perfectly pitched. He would play as a Pikmin and I'd play as Olimar. He'd feel as though he was helping and I could play quite happily too and we both really enjoyed it.

He also tried playing as Olimar as well... I didn't realise but you can control Olimar entirely through the touch screen - which Calumn did intuitively... Although I had to tell him to go a bit gentle on it as he was tapping a bit too hard.

So, for the first time really, me and my boy sitting playing a game together constructively... Actually helping each other out, laughing and having fun. That's my gaming moment of 2012 right there.

Also played FZero and Metroid for a good while as well. Impressed at just how 'core' the controls for Metroid are... Looking forward to that one with some mates. The music is brilliant too...

Very surprised at how good FZero was as well. Thought it was going to be a bit of a disappointing filler... But gets Very addictive. Like the way it forces you to look up to see further ahead if you want to get the best times. Also, avoiding other racers bit must look cool as when watching it... Love the little touch of shoving your face up on the screen so the others can laugh at your concentration as you pull off some sweet moves.

The WiiU definitely takes a bit of time to "get" and this might end up being its downfall... But I'm really looking forward to what Indy devs will do with it, as they may be more willing to take a risk.

You get a fiver off for every 50 quid you spend in the eshop. I've already used my first code!

Now don't hang me for this but seeing as I still have Skyward Sword to start do you guys think it's best to play that on Wii U, for the added upscaling or wouldn't that really make a difference?

To be honest, I don't think Wii games look any better through the WiiU which is a pity so I wouldn't use that as a reason to get one (unless you really want to I suppose). It hasn't stopped me from picking up a few Wii bits and bobs that I missed though. ^_^

So Little Inferno, is it just something to spunk £12.99 on just to have something else to play on a new system, or a recommended purchase regardless?

Bit of both.

More people will buy it because its on their new console. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing because its lovingly put together and offers some fun logical thinking wrapped up in a a pretty atmospheric world. I am on the fence as to if its a game or not. It's kind of clearly not, at least in any traditional sense. But if you look at it as the logic puzzles from point and click games without any of the wondering around (Use the pirate with the ninja etc) then it has game elements to it and some fun ones too. Apart from that it's just some story and some pretty pictures and the fun of watching what happens when you burn things.

At £13 it is expensive for 4-6 hours of play but like deKay I don't regret the purchase as I enjoyed the experience. I've spent more on games that I have hated and given up in less time.

£13 is quite over priced for a 'toy' which is what it looks like. World of Goo was a great fun game and was mega cheap and makes this seem even more expensive. Not saying it should be 59p levels but £13 is quite a lot for a downloadable toy.

I think it depends what you expect from a software purchase.

If you expect a good degree of playtime for your money then you're not going to get that. If you expect a big sense of achievement when you work through of finish a piece of software then you wont get that either.

If you are willing to spend £13 on a nice way to spend 4-6 hours and you like a bit of atmosphere then you should like it.

Your score for it is REALLY tied in with your expectations. Which is why it is such a hard game to mark out of 10.

Nope. You get 420 points for a £50 purchase. I've got two download games and only one £5 code with points left over.

It's not great but it is better than nothing at all. The good thing is that it runs until Xmas 2014 so over time you should build up a bit of credit if you are going to acutally use the shop. I am sure they might make it permanent if its surveyed that it makes people spend more points as well.

One annoying thing. I'm right in saying that the points are not linked accross the stores right? If I add £50 to my Wii U estore its not available in the 3DS store right?

I think it's a great idea actually. I'd rather it was automated or at least all handled within the eShop rather than an external web site though.

Yep. Very annoying if you've bought one of the eShop cards from Game or elsewhere.
