Nintendo Wii U

Another one here who has had someone who thought the gamepad was a peripheral for the Wii...

Neighbour came in last night and asked if I had it... got chatting and he became surprised as he thought it was a new controller for the Wii "like that Kinection thing for the Xbox" (is how he described it).

After a bit we went and had a wee shot of it, showed him ZombiU, netflix, the browser, miiverse and how you can play and watch telly at the same time (proper big games like Call of Duty and Assasin's Creed which are favourites in his house)...

"Much is it?"

So - either Nintendo knew this was going to happen and are doing a 'soft launch' where interest spreads by word of mouth once the 'core' get it and click with the thing - so they can do the confusing marketing message for them...

Or - they've really confused people.

A bit of both no doubt, they were suppose to be aiming for the core market with all the noises coming from them. I worry for them sales wise, if there aiming for the core market then they dont seem to be winning it over and the online not having the core features many like. As you say the casual market dont seem to know that its a full new console, the ad blitz doesnt seem as strong as it was for wii.

New Lego City Undercover trailer.

Seriously, I will get a WiiU when this is out. It looks great. And is that Morgan Freeman doing the voicework?

This and Bayonetta 2 cement my Wii Us place under my TV.

Yeah, I think they've made a massive, massive error of judgement with their marketing.

And while I'm on a Nintendo news kick, The WiiU sold 425,000 units in it's first week in the US. That isn't the story over at Eurogamer, though, because the 360 sold 1.26 million units!!!! In a month, though.

The Wii U sold 425,000 units during its US launch week, Nintendo has revealed. That's just 5000 less than the Wii recorded six years ago.

November US figures revealed that Nintendo shifted 420,000 units of its ageing Wii over the whole month (down 51 per cent on last year).

But it was Microsoft who claimed the sales crown. The Xbox 360 sold 1.26 million units, a 25 per cent dip from 2011's sales but more than the Wii and Wii U combined (although, to be fair, the Wii U was only out for one week).

The 3DS performed better than either of Nintendo's home consoles - 540,000 units were sold in November - but numbers were down around a third on last year.

The DS actually increased its sales year-on-year, the only piece of gaming hardware to do so. It notched up 370,000 sales, an increase of about 5 per cent.

As usual, Sony did not divulge its figures, although we can estimate PlayStation Vita numbers based on a statement to USA Today (via NeoGAF) that the handheld had its second best month of sales since launch. That would place its total between 210,000 and 225,000 - less than any of Nintendo's consoles.

In terms of software sales, Black Ops 2 was, predictably, top of the US November chart. It sold 7.4 million copies on PS3 and Xbox 360. A rough comparison for sales on the same platforms shows a dip in figures from both Modern Warfare 3 (8.8m) and the original Black Ops (8m), although Black Ops 2 had one less week on sale.

Halo 4, second in the chart, sold around 4 million copies (thanks, GameSpot), pushing the series sales total over the 50 million units mark.

New Super Mario Bros U sold 243,000, Nintendo said - meaning nearly 60 per cent of Wii U owners bought a copy.

Well Morgan Freeman is in the Lego Movie, so there's a good chance he's in this too.

Are you sure its him and not the sound a like like him on that tv advert.

So it sold more or less as well as wii did in its first week not the doom and gloom many make it out to be then.

It does sound like him, but a quick look around has most sites saying its a soundalike.

I'm twitching people. Shopto have the premium with Mario U for £340. I'll get £17 worth of points back from that meaning with my existing points I could get ZombieU for about £20 as well and have them delivered tomorrow. So tempted.

Using the "core" to tell their neighbours? Well based on the fact it would be (by some margin) the stupidest strategy a multinational corporation could take to sell tons of a new piece of consumer electronics I would say its more likely to be a fuckup.

I think it is meant to be a soft launch that hits the "core" followed by picking up the "casual" when they price drop it and put WiifitU and WiiUSports on it.

And yes it is confused right now, when I bought my WiiU an assistant was explaining to a parent buying a Wii that the WiiU was not a gamepad addon.

The console looks "similar" to the Wii (with a very similar name) and has a "tablet" and costs alot. You can see why some people might assume it was a redesigned Wii with an "expensive tablet" addon bundled in a la 360 bundled with Kinect.

I think a lot of families and the WiiU's target market were burnt buying Kinect last Christmas and now wary about buying the latest console.

And has has been said, if people are aware of the gamepad, whether they think it's an add-on for the Wii or a new console it doesn't really matter. As long as they're aware of it. More important is making it seem desirable, something they've failed to do so far but it's very early days and the console seems to have lots of potential. If it's being outsold by the 360 next Christmas they should probably start to worry.

That Lego game is getting bought. Pre-order preordered.

Yes, it looks very good.

I really hope Lego City is as awesome as it looks. I love the Lego games (even those I don't like, or understand, the "source material" for - Star Wars III and Harry Potter, for instance), and I love the "pissing about playing with the toys the game provides" that stuff like GTA provides.

Combine the two and it's basically my perfect game.

If people really think a) it is just an add-on and b) it costs 300 quid Nintendo have got a lot of work to do if they want it to be desirable.

I dont think they think it is a 300 quid addon, they see a wii alongside on the box so they think it is a Wii bundled with an new "expensive tablet thing".

It just needs a killer app

It's quite depressing that so many 360s are still being sold. It's time for the creaky old bastard to retire, not have a second/third youth!

Microsoft did something pretty special though by redesigning the firmware. Effectively, it's a 'different machine' from a front end point of view. I can only hope Nintendo follow suit with this into the future, it was a total stroke of genius.

you know - even I am not daft enough to think it's their strategy... it's confused casual players. I've seen it with my own eyes. The thing was though, once he'd seen it for a bit and spent time with it - he really liked it and became interested in getting one for himself. The killer feature was being able to play Call of Duty while the missus or the kids watched the telly...

The YouTube app is FUCKING HORRIBLE btw. Tried it for the first time, whoever designed it was clearly on drugs. The interface makes no sense at all.

Nintendo Land is starting to grow on me now. Initial impressions (playing sessions months ago) had me excited, but I had barely touched the game (cheers, ZombiU!) until yesterday. For some reason it didn't click with me upon release.

However, playing Zelda: Battle Quest with my girlfriend proved both amusing and challenging, with lovely music remixes (Gerudo Valley ). It's frustrating at times, but still good fun. We're just scratching the surface with Pikmin Adventure now, which seems quite fun with four people in co-op.

Best of all Metroid Blast is THE NUTS. I don't think I've ever played a game of target shooting that's as fun as this, especially after the Kraid boss battle. Not to mention playing it with friends: having three Samus-Mii's dangling from the fourth's space ship by their grapple beams, blasting at everything that moves, has got to be one of the coolest things ever :D

Funnily enough, the three 'tag' minigames (Mario Chase, Animal Crossing: Sweet Day and Luigi's Mansion) seems to be losing their edge for me already - although Animal Crossing has kept five of us at home entertained for a few good hours already :)

Still need to get into the singleplayer minigames properly. Especially having figured out the coin-operated pachinko machine also holds various music remixes, which you can listen to on a jukebox at the plaza. It holds some cracking F-Zero remixes!
