Nintendo Wii U

My hearing might not be the best but I'm sat here playing Mario and the console is silent. It makes a racket when it accesses the disc same as the Wii did but when its not spinning no noise at all.

Curiously my miiverse profile just got moderated - apprentley I'm not allowed to say I'm dreamylittledream on rllmuk - although even more curiously sprite seems to be able to say the same thing (well thats she's sprite anyway).

I'm not getting the whole needing the games on dashboard thing - I might be extremely lazy but its no real issue to change the disc when I want to play something - I get it on a handheld when carrying around a sackfull of carts is a pain if you are out and about but on a home machine - my games are in a drawer in the tv cabinet - I can move from the sofa if I want to play something different. Its surely not worth the loss in resale value and the ridiculous e-shop premium for the convienience of not moving from a seating position if I want to play something different? I can't really see me buying any retail games on the e-shop - I tend to play games, complete them and move onto the next one - if I buy a digital copy all that means is that I have dead space on the machine once I've finished a game and I can't recover any of the cost - not really worth the trade off just to have it available from the dashboard.

How are the prices for the digital stuff in comparison? Shop prices or psn '£59.99 lal' prices?

Everything on the e-shop is RRP with no retailer discounting at all

(eg Sonic is £39.99 on the shop but available from loads of places including amazon on a disc for £29.99)

Really liking the machine.

My only grumbles so far are:

1. Overscan problem - seems a common probably with Nintendo not allowing for this, means I'm missing the edge of the screen all around. Quite annoying and I'm hoping they fix it in a firmware update.

I was having this problem. There's an option to adjust the screen sizing in the miiverse. Go to your account and then settings.

I presume you have relatively old TVs? If not, most sets now have either a "Full Pixel" or, as it's called on my Samsung, "Screen Fit". Look in your picture settings and change from 16:9 to that. I use it on all of my gaming inputs as it provides a 1:1 reproduction of the source, though it's much more important on Wii U, given how bad the overscan is by default.

I just received my £20 in Zavvi vouchers. Of course they're all for things that no one wants on sites I've never used. I won't spend any time caring because it wasn't part of the deal when I preordered.

However, my Wii U honeymoon is over. I downloaded the FIFA 13 demo today. Utter garbage. All the GamePad controls are counter-intuitive. I can't even get the shake to initiate touch screen shooting to work consistently. Not that I'd want to. Even when using the regular controls, the AI is woefully stupid. No sense to the runs made and the passing is usually off.

I didn't buy FIFA13 on other formats this year but don't recall FIFA turning into the most hateful football game of all time. The Vita launch one was fine. Graphically, it's an increasingly familiar story for Wii U ports. Graphics are good, frame rate is variable.

So I went back to Black Ops 2 multiplayer. To cut a long moan short, my Wii U copy of BO2 is getting sold.

And it's now that my mood begins to turn to the negative aspects of the console. The fan is the loudest of my three current consoles. Pikmin 3 has been delayed and there's nothing else on the horizon. Oh, and dem updates.

Best get back to ZombiU, then...

Hmmm fifa 13 on wii u is more or less fifa 12 on the other consoles, im playing it and its just as good as 12 was on other consoles i like 12 better than 13. As for cod i have that on both and enjoying it just as much, there are less players on wii u but apart from that its the same fun online. You need to have a word with nintendo if the console is louder than your 360 mind.

My 5 year old sony and 7 year old samsung have these options, if your having overscan on wii u then you have been missing the full picture on everything just wii u hasnt built safe zones into everything like most do. Argggh overscaning tvs, have a look in your settings lads your missing picture on every hd source you have.

Unfortunately my old Samsung doesn't have the option to do that. Tried through all the menus but only options are 16:9. 4:3 and zoom (which just screws with the picture even more).

Ps3. 360. Hooking laptop up to the tv. All work fine. Just the Wii u causing issues.

.....gives me a good excuse to get a new tv...

That's fine by me. If only I could find somewhere on the Internet where I can read wii u impressions without somebody rolling up and derailing it with pages of self-indulgent pissig and moaning because Nintendo moved on from 1998. How is this in any way interesting? Why is every thread about Nintendo an inevitable descent into the very worst that gaming forums have to offer?! It's infuriating an my fingers hurt from scrolling through it all. You think that after 15 years some people would have got the message. Nintendo don't care about you, buy a play station.

usually my fault... sorry!

It's funny, isn't it? I've noticed recently - say, the last 4-5 months - that I really can't be arsed buying disc based games anymore, unless they're dramatically cheaper. It's not so much the issue of changing the discs per se; but more the convenience of being able to flick between games at will. It's something I love about my vita, actually, for the ease of portable play.

I'm the same. In a lot of cases I'd happily pay the extra for the convenience, as long as the difference isn't too dramatic. I mean, I already own Gravity Rush on cart, but I downloaded it from PS+ so I could leave Virtua Tennis 4 in the slot instead. All the other games I'm interested in playing on Vita are now saved to the memory. Dreading running out of room on this ridiculously expensive proprietary memory card, mind.

Looking through the eShop (and PSN and XBL are just as bad) though and the prices for downloads - 54.99? It's mental.

I wish I had NSMBU and Sonic as downloads. They're ideal games for popping in and out of.. but when the price difference is so big, I'm just not going to do it.

The moderation on the forum could be a lot better in that regard. Say what you want about NeoGAF, but when things get out of hand with fanboyism, the moderators do step in and sort things out. Contrast that to here, when you had a committee member bump an old sales thread when the UK Wii U sales numbers were getting talked about on the news sites. No attempt at discussion or anything. Just something along the lines of, "this should be interesting". Real helpful that.

Your being quite selective though. On xbl anyway while there are games that are hitting £50 some older games start from £11.99 through to £19.99 with the odd sale. Knowing Nintendo I cannot see them putting any of their 1st party games on sale ever.

That's what fixed it on my TV. However that option for me is only available via HDMI. I wanted to use my component cable since both my HDMI ports are taken up. The option to fix the overscan is greyed out via component. Very odd thing for Nintendo to balls up a bit to be honest.

My gamepad is definitely faulty. Cant even start the F-Zero minigame as holding up the pad only registers for a split second. Rang the Nintendo helpline to see if they could send me a replacement but the girl on the other end reckons that the pad and console are paired together and everything must be replaced. Anyone know if thats true?
