Nintendo Wii U

I'm pretty convinced after a week or so that the Gamepad is the best controller ever. Yes, even better than the 360 one, and accounting for the crappy battery life.

I just need to get BLOPS2 and test out the hypothesis on a FPS,

It is a noisey bugger

It's a bit rubbish the disc drive doesn't spin down when the game isn't being played. I hope they fix that in a future update,.

I just received my £20 in Zavvi vouchers. Of course they're all for things that no one wants on sites I've never used. I won't spend any time caring because it wasn't part of the deal when I preordered.

However, my Wii U honeymoon is over. I downloaded the FIFA 13 demo today. Utter garbage. All the GamePad controls are counter-intuitive. I can't even get the shake to initiate touch screen shooting to work consistently. Not that I'd want to. Even when using the regular controls, the AI is woefully stupid. No sense to the runs made and the passing is usually off.

I didn't buy FIFA13 on other formats this year but don't recall FIFA turning into the most hateful football game of all time. The Vita launch one was fine. Graphically, it's an increasingly familiar story for Wii U ports. Graphics are good, frame rate is variable.

So I went back to Black Ops 2 multiplayer. To cut a long moan short, my Wii U copy of BO2 is getting sold.

And it's now that my mood begins to turn to the negative aspects of the console. The fan is the loudest of my three current consoles. Pikmin 3 has been delayed and there's nothing else on the horizon. Oh, and dem updates.

Best get back to ZombiU, then...

If it's louder than your 360 - I'd get it checked out...

Sounds like you've not played either NintendoLand, Trine2, Sonic Racers or NSMBU to name a few.

At E3 2011 Nintendo made a thoroughly confusing announcement for the Wii U which made little to no mention of the console, instead talking entirely about the controller. The videos they ran had what looked to be a normal Wii in the background. Some smart arses didn't understand the confusion caused by the lack of clarification from Nintendo during that presentation and made big claims about it "obviously being a new console" even though Nintendo made no mention of it. Many of us were simply confused by the presentation and wondering what Nintendo were playing at.

Turns out that all this time after, some people still have absolutely no idea what it is. I think this is more a reflection on Nintendo than the public, the name and console design just isn't clear enough. They've basically 'done a 3DS' with the public, which is a shame, especially as they are trying to capture the cynic's who were turned off the Wii.

I get the impression they're starting to rest on their laurels and have taken the Wii's success for granted. They're getting a bit too cocky. We all know where that leads. Its a bit of a trend in the console business.

bollocks.

Of course, you have no interest in MiiVerse - but if you spent time with it, you'd understand that Nintendo have thought very long and very hard about the WiiU.

Cockiness would only lead back to what happened with the NES-N64*. They learned their lesson, at the time. But only after they lost control of first place.

*Treatment of third party devs during NES era. Western release schedules 6-12months apart or no release. General Yamauchi strict nature (not that he was entirely bad), etc.

If you actually paid attention to some of the stuff Nintendo have done with indie devs, letting them set their own prices, sales and their exclusive deal with the Unity guys... you'd know they're not resting on their laurels.

but you're not interested in any of that stuff...

Still have this strange limitation that not allowing people to work for them unless they have an actual office - but it's much more open by the sounds of it than either PSN and XBLA.

WTF!?!?! Pikmin's been delayed?

Ya buy Nintendo consoles just for Nintendo games. Its the Golden Rule. I learnt it the hard way.

FIFA's pap anyway. Pro Evo is back baby! :)

I know what the WiiU is... it's the new console from Nintendo that lets me play new games and has a different controller.

I do struggle when people say 'what is it?' - especially gamers?

It's good to know that you, Nintendo's biggest fanboy ever, knows what the wii u is - particularly since you have, in fact, purchased one. Well done, you sanctimonious fool. Your condescending platitudes enlighten us common folk.

How can you, as a gamer, really say you don't know what the WiiU is?? Really?

Are you psychic? How do you know i'm not interested in any of that stuff?

I'm talking about Nintendo's attitude towards the public. Its like they're expecting everybody to rush out and buy their new machine just because its got Wii and Nintendo on the box and has a new Mario game. They've got to really push this thing. Holding a presentation in which they don't seem to have announced anything, apart from a delay to Pikmin, smacks of arrogance. How hard is it to hint at or reveal some new titles? They should be making the most of the jump on their competitors, not pissing it away.

For the record, I didn't say I didn't know what the wii u is, I said I hadn't paid attention to it after being disappointed with the wii and held the impression that it was just a (slightly) harder, better, faster, stronger wii with a funky new controller but that all the waggle nonsense that so put me off the wii was still intact. I am very happy to have been incorrect in my assumption, so there is really no need for your to be quite so condescending.

Hardcore gamers really are an entitled bunch aren't they.

Because they want to know what's coming up on a new console they've invested in and are disappointed when Nintendo don't grasp a perfect opportunity to do so, as well as win some new fans? My word. How entitled they act.

Also, and this is just me being pedantic, your sentence should read 'hardcore gamers really act like an entitled bunch, don't they?', sarcastic inflection or no.

I don't think Nintendo are resting on their laurels but they are stretching themselves very thin. This is obvious when you read the Iwata interviews as team members come off a 3DS project to work on a Wii U one, leaving the 3DS one unfinished or in a state of flux. You can even tell this with their games, we've had a bunch of Wii U launch games, to the detriment of 3DS software and now we won't have anything for quite some time. Nintendo really need more teams to get more content created and out there as they are not balancing both a handheld and a console very well. Before it was easy for them, the handhelds were either 2D or basic 3D machines so didn't require large teams but the 3DS is almost up there with Wii quality graphics so requires Wii sized teams.

I don't think they're being arrogant or resting on their laurels, either. They didn't have to push out the wii u when they did. You may argue that they actually rushed it and could have delayed release and still made a shit tonne from wii sales, but the fact remains they have developed a new platform and launched it well ahead of the competition. Whether or not they've done it well and whether or not that was a sound strategy is another matter, of course, but you can hardly call then arrogant, though you could perhaps say they're out of touch a bit. But, to my mind, Nintendo have never really chased the almighty dollar, but instead just done whatever the hell they wanted and be damned what people think which is admirable and brave in the modern world of business.

And yes; there is something magical about Nintendo games that is rarely matched elsewhere and often reminds me why I got into gaming in the first place ^_^

You might have a point there. Any specific examples though?

Nintendo are opening a new studio in 2013 (http://nintendoevery...dos-new-studio/), R&D has been restructured, Retro have expanded, and I'm sure there were rumours that they were shopping around for third-party developers to buy.

They also seem like they might be publishing a lot of third party games for WiiU... Bayonetta2 and Scribblenauts being the first that come to mind.

I've never had a good experience with Zavvi. Wouldn't trust them to deliver a £2.99 cd let alone a new console.

To be fair to them they got the machine to me on launch day a good side cheaper for the ZombieU package and by my preferred courier.

Its just for reasons best known to themselves they chose to ship the game ordered at the same time on the same order by 2nd class Royal Fail which took a week to arrive rather then just put it in the same box.

They are already trying to lure me back with a 15% off discount code that arrived today - I should resist but Nintendoland for £33 is tempting - is it worth that for pretty much singleplayer only? Little chance of multiplayer hijinx given my so is still a tad too young for joining in this kind of thing and currently the arrival of the WiiU is still possible for grounds for divorce rather than joyful play with the games hating wife.
