Nintendo Wii U

I can see the VC getting getting a new lease of life when they make it work on the gamepad. Coin-ops are great for quick games and I can see people booting them up while the other half is watching the big TV.

I don't see it as a big problem that they haven't done it yet though.

Except the pad has a sensor bar in it for exactly this purpose.

Please try to imagine how this setup would work.

I can only imagine that the intended purpose for the sensor bar on the controller is so you could sit it in front of the TV in place of a normal sensor bar, but they've never mentioned that or shown an actual use for it. It's such a weird inclusion.

Youll have to rebuy wii u versions of vc titles for them to work on the gamrpad screen

I doubt that. So long as you've transferred your purchases over. There's no reason by Nintendo can't update the software. You'll likely have to redownload them.

They showed someone placing it on the floor then playing golf using a wiimote. The gamepad showing the ball which you knock into the TV.

Why would that need a sensor bar on the floor? That was just a demo of a stupid way the pad could show how the ball is sitting, not a way it could improve the way it detects a golf swing. That works fine with the remote on it's own.

The sensor bar will be on the floor looking up at you. As you swing over the gamepad/ball as the pointer goes over the area the sensor bar covers you can get data from the pointer as it moves through the swing.

Im sure they can use this data to help improve things - even if its simply tracking entry and exit points.

If this extra data improves the game/gameplay is another thing :P

edit: strikethrough one bit

That recent Iwata speaks video, where he doodled on Reggie Yates' face, had him using a stand. In fact, you can buy an official stand for it. Perfect for sitting your pad in front of the telly when playing Wii games with Reggie Yates.

I've seen that. He's not using the pad as a sensor bar, is he?

I think the golf one was specifically putting. It would be super accurate - much more so than the wiimote motion sensor. It's a very limited purpose though.

It wasn't - it showed hitting a ball which was in a sand trap. Which worked perfectly well with motion plus and no sensor bar sitting under the player.

It's such a limited purpose that it doesn't even exist. Can't get any more limited than that!

The translation of the Nintendo vid that rgraves posted yesterday morning states that VC games won't be playable on the game pad but the new Wii-U VC games will be. So I think you'll have to buy them again.

What if we're transferring a ton of illegally downloaded VC wads from a soft-modded Wii?*

*Not that I'm doing that or anything.

Conflicting posts here about needing motion plus for Mario Bros U. Only have one of the things (the gold Zelda one), all the others are normal ones. I wanted all 4 of us to be able to play this. If I have to get two new Wiimotes then I'm afraid I'm out. Anyone know for sure?

We'll see I guess. It would be very mean spirited not to offer a free upgrade.
